For Governors to Succeed, Local Governments Must Succeed – Sanwo-Olu

Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said that for the state governors in Nigeria to succeed in providing better grassroots leadership, the local government system in the country must succeed as a tier of government.

The Governor, who spoke during a courtesy visit to his office by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) led by its National President, Hon. Alabi Kolade David.

He equally urged ALGON to understudy the state infrastructure and revenue generation models across the 57 local government and council clusters in the state.

According to him, local governments his administration understands the strength and weaknesses of each local government and adopted a peer review mechanism that will enable them to succeed.

He disclosed that local governments and councils chairmen in Lagos State are brought to speed of his leadership and economic template, which forms the fulcrum of his six pillar agenda that are cascaded down to the councils.

In his response, the ALGON Deputy National President, Hon. Aminu Maifata Muazu thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu on behalf of the Association and praised him for his leadership qualities that has positively impacted on all diversities in the country.

He also commended the state governor for demonstrating confidence in the leadership qualities of the ALGON national President, Hon. Alabi, who is the chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area and have meritoriously excelled in service delivery to his constituents.

The courtesy call by the ALGON National Executive Council (NEC) was on the sideline of the just concluded NEC meeting and retreat in the state.

Part of the ALGON delegations were over 30 state reps and 30 state secretaries, who are all chairmen of councils. Also in attendance during the visit were Board of Trustees (BOT) members, the Director General of ALGON, Management and Staff.

ALGON Elects New National Deputy President, 2 Others At NEC Meeting/Retreat in Lagos

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has, at its 4th zonal meeting and retreat held in Lagos State, elected a new Deputy National President of the Association.

Also elected was a new National Treasurer while it the ratified the appointment of Hon. Victor Ebonka, the ALGON Delta State Chairman, as substantive National Legal Adviser after he had held the position in acting capacity. 

The new National Deputy President, Hon. Aminu Maifata Muazu from Nasarawa State, the new National Treasurer, Hon. Mohammed Bappa of Takai Local Government Area Kano State and the former acting National Legal Adviser, Hon. Victor Ebonka from Delta State were immediately sworn in by a notary public, Barr. Taiwo Onayinka of Strict Attorneys.

At the time of this report, a formal communique at the end of the NEC meeting and retreat held from November 16 to 17, 2021 is being expected.

During the NEC meeting, the ALGON National President received a delegation of the Association of Bloggers And Journalists Against Fake News who paid him a courtesy visit.

The National President of the association, Comrade James Ezema, who appreciated the ALGON National President for his open door policy, pledged to partner with the association in its effort to mitigate the negative impact of fake news on peace and development in the country.

Association of Bloggers and Journalists Against Fake News has affirmed it’s readiness to deploy representatives across all the local governments and Councils in the country. 

The President of the Association, Comrade James Ezema, made this known yesterday in Lagos during a courtesy visit to the national President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Hon. Alabi Kolade David during ALGON National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting held in Lagos. 

Comrade Ezema, who led a delegation of the association lamented the negative impacts of fake news in the country, saying that the association is ready to carry out enlightenment campaigns against the dangers of fake news to national security and development.

The association’s delegates joined the ALGON NEC on a tour of ongoing projects and executed ones in Onigbongbo and Bariga Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

Arewa Pastors’ Forum Declares Katsina Most Religiously Tolerant State

Arewa Pastors’ Forum for Peace has described Katsina state as the best in the country in terms of religious tolerance.

The forum, led by its National President, Bishop Japeth Mbayo, gave the commendation on Wednesday in Katsina when they paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor, QS Mannir Yakubu, in his office.

Mr Mbayo said the conclusion was reached after the presentation of the Katsina state delegation made at the International Conference of the forum held in Yola, Adamawa State.

“When we heard the presentation, we were all highly impressed with the kind treatment the Katsina state government give to the Christian community alongside other faith without discrimination.

“There is no state in the country where you have such cohesion where the Christians and Muslims are living in harmony. You can’t try that with Plateau, Lagos, Rivers or any other state.

“We therefore deemed it necessary to travel down to Katsina, to congratulate the government and people of Katsina state, to express our appreciation and to commiserate with people of the state over the issues of insecurity and pray for the return of normalcy,” he said.

In his remarks, the Deputy Governor, Mannir Yakubu, thanked the delegation for the visit, saying the commendation would serve as a great impetus for the Katsina state government to continue to serve all citizens of the state irrespective of their faith, ethnic inclination.

“This is a very important visit, and we take it very seriously. It will give us courage to continue to do what is right for our people. All our people are the same to us and we will continue with their service,” he said.

Special prayers for peace were offered during the visit by the National President of the forum as well as their International consultant, Bishop Daiel Garza, who came all the way from Texas, United State.

Katsina Deputy Governor Condoles Family of Late Business Mogul, Yahaya Gafai

Katsina state Deputy Governor Mannir Yakubu has condoled the family of late Yahaya Gafai who died on Wednesday after a brief illness.

He died at the age of 97 years.

Late Yahaya Gafai is survived with one wife, 14 children and many Grandchildren.

He was buried at Abbatua Cemetery according to Islamic rites.

Before his death, he was an Islamic Scholar and a popular business mogul.

In his condolence message, the Deputy Governor prayed to Allah to grant the deceased Jannatin Firdausi and give the entire family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Okowa congratulates Isiguzo on re-election as NUJ President

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has congratulated Comrade Chris Isiguzo on his re-election as President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Isiguzo the South East Bureau Chief of THISDAY Newspaper was re-elected unopposed during the union’s 7th Triennial National Delegates Conference, held on Thursday at Umuahia, Abia.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, Okowa lauded the union’s delegates for re-electing Isiguzo for a second term.

He expressed optimism that Isiguzo would perform better in his second term given what he brought to bear on the union’s leadership in his first term.

He remarked that Isiguzo, first elected President of the union in 2018 at Abeokuta, had not only stabilised the NUJ, but had also brought a lot of candour and panache to NUJ leadership.

Okowa said, “I have never doubted your ability to effectively lead the union to enviable heights you have taken it to, and i must thank your colleagues for rewarding your excellent performance in the last three years by unanimously returning you and some of your executive members unopposed.

“As we approach the 2023 general elections, the role of the media in ensuring that Nigerians get free, fair and credible polls cannot be overemphasised.

“I, therefore, charge you and your colleagues to provide balanced reportage as you shape opinions and set agenda ahead of the polls.

“The media as Fourth Estate of the Realm must, at this critical time in our country, prominently play its fundamental watchdog role, holding leaders accountable to the people.

“The media should lead in directing governance on the right path, including the rule of law, and ensure that all tenets of democracy are upheld in the country.”

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I congratulate you, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, on your well-deserved re-election as president of Nigeria Union of Journalists,” he added and assured him and the union of his support at all times.

The governor congratulated members of the union for a successful conference.

The National Anti-Multiple Taxation Scheme (NAMTAXS) and National Transit Insurance Scheme (NATIS) projects have commenced with issuance of stickers to certified Vendors and Authorized Agents.

At the maiden sale of the stickers on Friday afternoon at the national headquarters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), one Mchells Universal Solutions made initial payment and collected the sticker value of the paid sum.

Addressing the gathering, the Director-General of ALGON, Mrs Binta Bello ably represented by the Director Legal and Admin, Barr. Mrs Evan Enekwe, thanked the representative of Mchells Solutions for keying into the project.

He call on others to follow up and maximize the window created by the project1 to put an end on illegal collection of levies, fees, and charges on the road.

She said that the project has come to save the hardship which the end users encounter in the course of doing their business.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the planning and implementation of ALGON NAMTAXS AND NATIS, Mr. Nuhu Ozigi expressed delight on the successful take off of the project.

He called on others to expedite action to make it a success noting that Banks that were present honoured the invitation to build relationships and support the project.

Mr. Ozigi thanked them alongside some Consultants, including IPI, Cyber 1, and its coordinating Consultant and others who were present.

Members of the management and staff of ALGON also graced the colourful occasion.

Anambra Guber: APC Support Group for Andy Uba Intensifies Grassroots Campaign in Onitsha North

Ahead of the November 6, 2021 governorship elections in Anambra State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) support group for Andy Uba has repositioned itself for a more intensive door-to-door mobilisation campaign.

The essence, the group noted, is to ensure victory for Senator Dr Andy Uba at the polls.

While addressing members of the group in Ward II, Onitsha North Local Government Area as part of its Ward Tour Programme, the coordinator, Andy Uba 4 Governor Support Group, Onitsha North, Hon. Victor Mba commended the coordinator of Ward II, Hon Magnus Nwoke for mobilising an appreciable crowd that cuts across party affiliations.

The audience were part of an interactive session.

Hon. Victor Mba charged members of the group to roll up their sleeves for the task ahead, stressing that the time had come for APC to take over leadership and reposition Anambra State.

He disclosed that the group was very organised, focused, firm, bold, resolute, dogged and undaunted towards actualising the mission of APC taking over governance in Anambra State.

Hon. Mba stressed the importance of holding down their respective polling units, adding that adequate campaign materials and logistics would be distributed to them at the wards and polling unit levels.

The APC support group’s coordinator maintained that those who delivered at any of the polling booths would be adequately rewarded.

He added that they should pull resources together and work assiduously for the success of the Andy Uba for Governor Project.

Hon. Victor Mba also admonished members of the group to shun any financial distractions from opposition parties.

He charged them to enlighten eligible voters who are yet to obtain their PVC to avail themselves of the opportunity of the ongoing online continuous voter’s registration exercise to enable them cast their votes during the election.

Also speaking, the zonal coordinator, APC Ward-To-Ward Ambassadors, South East Zone, Comrade Akunwata Ejor Ojiba congratulated Senator Andy Uba for the formal affirmation of his candidacy as the party’s flag bearer by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Comrade Ojiba who was the gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) in the 2017 governorship election in the state also urged the electorate to discountenance the mischievous propaganda making rounds that APC was a north-oriented party.

He maintained that since unfolding events had shown that an APC Igbo President was feasible and imminent.

He said, it has become imperative that Anambra becomes an APC state to enable Ndi-Anambra join the mainstream of Nigerian politics.

He also charged members of the group to remain steadfast and committed to the campaign programmes of the Andy Uba 4 Governor project by working assiduously to ensure victory for the party at all the polling booths in the local government area.

He noted that it has become expedient for a positive change from the present lackluster leadership of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in order to rescue the state.

Comrade Ojiba further disclosed that the operational slogan of the WWA group is ‘Operation Ward-To-Ward, Polling Unit-By-Polling Unit Mobilisation and Monitoring System.’

In his contribution, a member of the APC National campaign committee for Anambra Governorship Election and former two-term member House of Representatives, Hon Gozie Agbakoba reiterated the need for the group to imbibe the polling unit-by-polling unit strategies.

He equally congratulated Senator Andy Uba for successfully receiving the party’s flag from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Hon. Agbakoba then extolled the leadership qualities of Senator Andy Uba, adding that he was the most capable candidate with a mission to rescue Anambra from imminent collapse.

He described Senator Andy Uba as an experienced politician with pedigree, track record, impeccable character, humanness and political will to rescue the state from collapse.

The National campaign committee member who is also a member of Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Ward-To-Ward Ambassadors (WWA) Anambra Chapter, charged members of the group to rise to the moment by intensifying their efforts towards mobilising at least 30 potential voters each at their various polling units.

He, therefore, expressed satisfaction at the massive turn-out of party faithfuls during the ward tour.

UAE Debunks Ban on Work Permit To Nigerians

The United Arab Emirates’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Fahad Obaid AI Taffaq, has said there is no official communication placed on issuance of work permit for Nigerians living and working in the United Arab Emirates.

Ambassador AI Taffaq stated this when he received Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) at the Embassy in Abuja.

He said just like others, he read about the ban in the social media, stressing that the UAE has no restrictions against any nationality. He said there are possibly isolated cases of individuals whose work visas were not renewed for one reason or the other.

He added that only last week UAE issued over 50 visas to Nigerians and stressed that there are thousands of Nigerians working and living legally in the UAE.

The UAE Envoy said they were optimistic that Emirates Airlines would soon resume flights into Nigeria.

Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM said the clarification is really reassuring given a barrage of calls and inquiries by Nigerians within and outside the UAE on official stoppage of issuance of work permit to Nigerians in the UAE.

NiDCOM Boss urged Nigerians in the UAE to always obey the laws of their host country, be good Ambassadors and excel in whatever they do.

She further adds that any Nigerian with consular issues should approach the Nigerian Mission in UAE for advice and clarifications as each case would be treated on its own merit.

APC Support Group Flags Off Ward Tour In Onitsha North

The Coordinator APC Support Group For Andy Ubah for Governor Project, Hon Victor Mba has stressed the need for concerted efforts toward ensuring victory for Senator Andy Ubah in the November 6 polls in Anambra State.

Addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) faithfuls at ward 14 during the flag off of the group’s Ward-To-Ward Tour, Hon Mba disclosed that the Ward Tour exercise was aimed at galvanising the party members to redouble their efforts in sensitising the electorate at the grassroots level.

He added that it’s aimed towards identifying with and supporting APC Candidate Senator Andy Ubah for the collective interest of party members and the benefit of Ndi Anambra in general.

Hon Victor Mba further pointed out that Ndi Anambra are tired and disenchanted with the present APGA government in the state.

He noted that this is the opportunity for the citizens in Anambra State to effect the change of government in order to rescue the state from thuggery and visionless leadership.

The APC Support Group Coordinator then urged eligible voters who are yet to obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to avail themselves of the opportunity of the ongoing online Continuous Voters Registration Exercise to collect their PVC to enable them participate effectively in the forthcoming elections.

In his contributions, a former member, House of Representative and B.O.T member WARD-TO-WARD AMBASSADORS,(WWA) Anambra chapter HON, Gozie Agbakoba expressed confidence on the victory of Senator Andy Ubah at the forthcoming November 6th elections in Anambra State, adding that the chances was better enhanced now that there was unity within the party.

He called for an inclusive participation of all in the Andy-Ubah-For-Governor Project through individual mobilization of at least 100 potential Voters each at the polling centres.

Hon Gozie Agbakoba disclosed that the Ward-To-Ward Ambassadors, (WWA) was fully recognized by the party leadership at the National Level stressing that campaign logistics would be distributed and shared in accordance with polling units in a particular Local Government Areas.

He maintained that emphasis should be on striving to win at the polling unit level, and admonished the group that logistics for the mobilization exercise must be duely disposed and used for the purpose it was meant for stressing that the strategic action work plan was Operation-Win-Your-Polling-Unit to reap the reward of the electoral victory.

He also urged members of the group to intensify efforts in sensitizing eligible voters to obtain their PVC to enable them cast their votes during elections.
