AI Age: Obaigbena Charts African Response with Lekeelekee Platform to Challenge Global Content Dominance

Nduka Obaigbena, founding Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY Media Group and ARISE News Channel, on Thursday delivered a rousing address at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference in Abuja, calling on Nigerian editors to defend democracy, embrace artificial intelligence, and reclaim Africa’s place in global media distribution.

Addressing more than 500 editors, policymakers, and diplomats at the State House Conference Centre, Obaigbena unveiled plans to launch a new homegrown digital platform, Lekeelekee, in January 2026. The platform, he said, is designed to “dilute the chokehold of the United States and China” over the global flow of information and entertainment content.

“We must engage for the greater good of Nigeria,” Obaigbena declared, reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the execution of journalist Ken Saro-Wiwa under military rule. “Thirty years after, we sit in this same complex under a democratic government. That is why democracy matters.”

In a sweeping speech that wove together history, economics, and media innovation, Obaigbena linked Nigeria’s authoritarian past to its current democratic progress. He invoked the legacies of three historic media figures — Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Bola Tinubu — to illustrate the transformative power of journalism in shaping national leadership.

Obaigbena commended President Tinubu, who hosted the conference and is himself a former media proprietor, for maintaining an open channel with the press. “We are at the crossroads of reforms that have been hard fought,” he said. “We must protect our economic stability with everything we have, because if we lose it, we lose the sacrifices of the last two years.”

He warned that external shocks — including sanctions or geopolitical disruptions — could “destabilise the economy” and undermine recent fiscal gains. Instead, he urged editors and national leaders to “build a coalition of the willing” to confront insecurity, poverty, and the rise of misinformation through cooperation and shared purpose.

Turning to technology, Obaigbena stressed that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the global media landscape. He cautioned that Africa risks becoming “a passive spectator” in a world where “one or two countries control global content distribution.”

“We are entering an AI-dominated information age,” he noted. “Google’s algorithms are changing, search models are shifting, and the monetisation of content is being rewritten. If we do not act, we will again be consumers, not creators, in the new media economy.”

He described Lekeelekee as a strategic intervention — a multimedia hub that would empower African creators, editors, and broadcasters to distribute and monetise their work independently of Western and Chinese digital gatekeepers. “We have a responsibility to build our own technology and algorithms,” he said, “to determine how our content is earned and shared.”

This year’s conference, themed “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors”, drew an impressive array of national leaders and media stakeholders.

President Bola Tinubu was joined by the governors of Plateau, Zamfara, Nasarawa, and Kano States, as well as ministers, diplomats, and media veterans including Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, and Femi Adesina.

General Hydrocarbons Limited Vs. First Bank of Nigeria: The Facts, Half-Truths, and Fiction

General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL) has disputed First Bank of Nigeria’s (FBN) claim of a $225 million loan, stating that the relationship between the two companies is a project finance agreement, not a normal commercial loan.

According to a press statement released by GHL, the company was approached by FBN to finance the exploration, development, and production of Oil Mining Lease (OML) 120, with FBN agreeing to share profits 50:50 and pay GHL the cost of finance. However, GHL alleges that FBN failed to meet its commitment to fully finance the project, resulting in losses of $47 million.

GHL also claims that FBN’s $225 million loan claim is premature, as the project has not yet achieved commercial production and is still covered by a moratorium. The company has initiated arbitration proceedings and is seeking over $1 billion in damages.

In response, FBN has obtained temporary Mareva measures, which GHL claims are supported by “wild, unfounded, and unproven allegations of dissipation of assets.” However, GHL maintains that all payments were made directly by FBN to third-party vendors after due diligence and verification.

The dispute between GHL and FBN has significant implications for the oil and gas industry, highlighting the complexities of project finance agreements and the need for careful consideration of contractual obligations.

As the arbitration proceedings continue, GHL remains open to mediation and resolution, while emphasizing its commitment to fighting for justice and damages. The outcome of this dispute will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and will likely have far-reaching consequences for project finance agreements in Nigeria.

Here is the full text of the press release:

GHL vs FBN: The Facts, The Half-Truths and The Fiction

1. Is GHL’s liability to First Bank a loan? The simple answer is NO, as it is not a normal commercial loan: it is a Project Finance relationship.

Here is how:

2. GHL is the awardee and licenced operator of OML 120. FBN approached GHL to finance the exploration, development and production of OML 120 and share profit 50:50, while paying FBN cost of finance. The FBN 50% share is dedicated to paydown its non-performing loan of $600million (discounted from $718million from AMCON’s Eligible Bank Asset) in

order to resolve FBN’s solvency issues.

In doing that, GHL guaranteed FBN’s liability to AMCON, through a
Tripartite Agreement between GHL, FBN and AMCON.

3. The result of the Tripartite Agreement was that FBN became immediately profitable and moved from a loss of N302Billion to a profit of N151Bn for 2021 FYE. However, in return, it has failed to meet its commitment under the Tripartite Agreement to fully finance and make the payments required for the optimal exploration and development of OML 120 as agreed in the Tripartite Agreement, resulting in losses in day rates and downtimes of $47million, which has snowballed into the current impasse as FBN has failed to make further required payments for the drilling and exploration of OML 120. Essentially, FBN failed to fulfil its condition precedent to profitability in failing to finance OML 120 as agreed, leaving its financial statements open to challenge. Meanwhile the FBN’s claim of $225Million loan is not due as it is still covered by moratorium, given that the project has not achieved commercial production. So, at best FBN’s claim is premature.

4. GHL has now gone for Arbitration which is ongoing and FBN has gone

to court with a series of Exparte (temporary) Mareva measures, the first of which has been vacated and the case is now being heard on the merit, whilst the second temporary Mareva is pending at the Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, both supported by” wild, unfounded and unproven allegations of dissipation of assets.

5. Did GHL dissipate any asset? The answer is no as all payments were made by First Bank DIRECTLY to 3rd parties after due diligence an dverifications by FBN, and the 3rd parties are mainly global, world class, reputable companies with strict compliance regimes.

6. GHL is filing a claim of over $1Billion in various courts, while FBN is claiming $225million debt which it never complied with in line with the agreements.

GHL will continue to fight for justice and damages whilst it remains open for mediation and resolution.

Nigerian Movie Producer, Duke of Shomolu, Commends Nduka Obaigbena Over Invitation to Thisday Award Ceremony

Popular Nigerian movie producer and author, Duke of Shomolu, has praised Dr. Nduka Obaigbena, the Chairman of Thisday Newspaper, for inviting him to the upcoming Thisday Awards, which will mark the 30th anniversary celebration of the newspaper.

In a statement shared on social media this morning, Duke expressed his excitement and gratitude for the invitation. He referred to Dr. Obaigbena as “a prince who refused to turn into a frog,” highlighting his admiration for Obaigbena’s understanding of Nigeria’s socio-political structure and his unwavering commitment to his values.

Duke recounted his encounters with Dr. Obaigbena, noting that he had met him only three times in his life. “Twice in his expansive apartment in Ikoyi, and once at the Afrif event last December, where I had gone to meet the governor. Dr. Obaigbena was seated at the front, preparing to take the stage,” he shared.

He further explained the significance of the invitation, especially given his past experiences with being overlooked by the organizers of the prestigious Thisday Awards. “Year after year, I’ve been ignored, left with an ashen face while others are celebrated,” Duke remarked. “But this time, the prince sent me an electronic invite with a personal request to RSVP, and I did so immediately.”

Duke also recounted his long admiration for the Thisday newspaper and its unmatched contribution to Nigeria’s media landscape. He fondly remembered the days when, as a young man, he would walk to Onipanu bus stop to buy the paper. “I fell in love with the beautiful prose of the writers, who became the next generation of superstar editors,” he said.

He acknowledged the transformative impact of Dr. Obaigbena’s leadership, which brought together talented writers and helped shape Thisday into a powerhouse of print journalism. “From the aesthetics of Thisday Style to the brilliant essays and features, it’s simply the best,” he said. “I have always believed this, long before I started writing for them.”

Duke also highlighted the influence of Thisday’s sister company, Arise TV, and its role in shaping national conversations. “Arise TV has become the go-to channel for many Nigerians, taking over as the premier station, even surpassing CNN in local offices.”

Despite his earlier frustrations with being ignored by the Thisday Awards organizers, Duke emphasized the significance of the upcoming event. “Tomorrow, local and international heroes will gather to celebrate Dr. Obaigbena’s vision, and I will be there, champagne in hand, enjoying the company of legends like Diana Ross.”

GHL Denies Owing FBN $225M, Claims Moratorium Is in Place

In a recent statement, General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL) has vehemently denied allegations of owing First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) $225 million. The statement, signed by Abdelmuizz Bello, Director of Strategy & Operations at GHL, provides a detailed breakdown of the issues in dispute between GHL and FBN.

According to the statement, “We entered a legally binding, enforceable Subrogation Agreement with First Bank on May 29, 2021, with FBN agreeing to fund GHL’s exploration, production and development of OML 120 in exchange for sharing profit from oil proceeds from the OML in a 50:50 ratio after statutory payments and taxes over 8 years.”

However, GHL alleges that FBN failed to meet its agreed-upon financial commitments, resulting in critical challenges for the development of OML 120. As stated in the release, “Essentially, GHL’s grouse is FBN’s failure to meet its agreed and executed financial commitments which GHL had believed would be made, when it signed the agreement resulting in critical challenges for the development of OML 120.”

Despite disbursing $185 million, FBN’s disbursement process was often delayed, lasting up to 70 days after funding requests. This led to massive losses in day rates and downtimes, resulting in inefficiencies and losses of over $147 million. As GHL emphasized, “The way and manner of the disbursement which was agreed to be 5 days after funding request, sometimes lasted up to 70 days after funding request; service providers led by Schlumberger, Baker Hughes and Century that were supposed to be paid at the same time for various interventions were paid sporadically at different times.”

GHL also highlighted that FBN’s credit and risk team verified and approved all contracts and invoices due to contractors engaged for the development and operations of the oil mining lease. Payments were made directly by FBN to these contractors and service providers, rendering allegations of diversion “befuddling and without merit.” As stated in the release, “The allegations of a diversion of the monies advanced to GHL are therefore befuddling and without merit as payment were made by FBN directly to service providers after vetting and approval by its credit and risk teams.”

The statement further noted that the disbursed loan of $185 million is not due for repayment, as it is still within the moratorium period as per the Facility and Tripartite Agreements. The loan is only due when there are profits to be shared 50:50 from commercial oil production. As GHL emphasized, “It is important to note that the disbursed loan of $185million is not due for repayment. The loan is still within the moratorium period as per the Facility and Tripartite Agreements.”

GHL accused FBN of attempting to bully and force GHL out of the transaction, using its directors and other proxies to induce a crisis. As stated in the release, “Instead of performing its role as a lender who was saved from the abyss, FBN is trying to bully and force GHL out of the transaction and take over the oil bloc, using its directors and other proxies with this clearly induced crisis.”

GHL is seeking to exercise its options under the agreement to find new lenders and partners that can efficiently and cost-effectively save the project for Nigeria. As stated in the release, “GHL is seeking to exercise its options under the agreement to find new lenders and partners that can be efficient and cost effective to save the project for Nigeria , should FBN remain intransigent.”

The statement concluded by emphasizing that GHL has obtained injunctions against FBN, restraining the bank from obstructing or preventing GHL from obtaining necessary funding for OML 120. As stated in the release, “GHL approached the Federal High Court and after arguments by both sides, obtained the following injunctions against First Bank on December 12, 2024.”

Despite this, FBN obtained an interim Mareva injunction restraining GHL and its shareholders from operating their accounts over the purported debt. GHL views this as an abuse of the court process and is seeking justice. As stated in the release, “This impunity is now back before the Federal High Court, Lagos. We believe that sooner or later Justice will be served.”

CNPP Calls for NNPC Boss to Step Down Over Subsidy Scam, Fuel Scarcity

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to be held accountable for Nigeria’s economic woes, citing allegations of subsidy scams, importation of substandard petroleum products, and mismanagement of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

According to the CNPP, in a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the NNPC’s failures have resulted in a nationwide shortage of petrol, causing immense hardship for Nigerians.

The umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria demands the suspension of NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and a thorough public probe into the allegations.

The CNPP argues that the NNPC’s leadership has been marked by controversy and failure, and its inability to address these issues makes it unfit to continue in its role. The organization also quotes Emir Sanusi’s statement that “people in NNPC don’t want their lucrative subsidy scam to end” as a damning indictment of the company’s leadership.

The CNPP recalls the 2022 incident where NNPC imported and supplied adulterated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency.

“We recall the 2022 incident where NNPC Limited, under Mele Kyari’s supervision, imported and supplied adulterated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria.

“The company’s trading arm, Duke Oil, was involved in the importation of the substandard product, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency. MRS, one of the companies indicted in the alleged importation and supply of the petrol, revealed that NNPC Limited, through its trading arm, Duke Oil, supplied the cargoes of PMS purchased from international trader Litasco.

“The GCEO Mele Kyari said that NNPC investigation revealed the presence of Methanol and accused four companies: MRS, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium, Oando, and Duke Oil of importing the four adulterated PMS cargoes.

“One of the companies Mele Kyari indicted in the alleged importation and supply of the bad petrol in 2022, is Duke Oil and none of the companies was prosecuted till date because Mele Kyari cannot probe and prosecute himself.

“Mele Kyari’s attempt to continue to play the victim, as displayed during his testimony before a Senate ad hoc committee investigating alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum industry, is unacceptable.

“His vow to reveal the truth about the company’s operations at the appropriate time rings hollow, given his history of controversy and failure”.

The political parties and political associations believe that there is no subsidy being paid by the NNPC and that Mele Kyari and the subsidy cartel are using petrol subsidy as a bait to sustain corruption.

The CNPP calls for a transparent, independent, and thorough probe into these allegations, with consequences for those found guilty of any wrongdoing.

The statement emphasizes that President Tinubu must act now to ensure that the Nigerian people get the truth and justice they deserve without further suffering and deprivation.

“We therefore demand that President Bola Tinubu takes immediate action to address these issues by suspending the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, and launching a thorough public probe into several allegations against the management of the NNPC Limited.

“One among many accusations, including incompetence, is subsidy scam allegations that are particularly egregious, and the reported statement by Emir Sanusi that “people in NNPC don’t want their lucrative subsidy scam to end” is a damning indictment of the company’s leadership.”

The CNPP added, “Mr President, it’s time to end the years of siege in the Nigeria’s oil industry and it’s time to hold NNPC Limited accountable by immediately suspending Mele Kyari and independently probing the subsidy scam and other allegations in the Nigeria’s upstream and downstream oil sectors to save the economy and minimise hunger.”

VDI Reinforces Pivotal Roles Of Nigeria’s Informal Sector At Abuja Meeting

The pivotal roles of the countries informal sector in the economic development aimed at creating access to employment opportunities, stimulating income generation and fostering entrepreneurial spirit have again been undeniably reinforced.

This followed some critical strategic resolutions during a recent two-day National Executive Council meeting of the Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) held in Abuja, the nations Capital.

The promoter and proponent of national Vat Direct Initiative (VDI), Hon Johnson Moses Olakunle, who doubles as the National Secretary MATAN and Chairman Steering Committee of the (VDI) used the 2024 maiden meeting which came barely one month after it’s National Conference and World Media briefing in Abuja in December, to thanked the National Executive Council members and the steering committe members drawn from the 36 states of Nigeria and FCT.

He noted that the meeting which according to him was well attended marks the beginning of its formal take off of advocacy, sensitization, implementation of programmes as he urged each state representatives to commence work and ensure that rules of engagement were applied.

Hon. Olakunle thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the initiative which according to him will mitigate poverty, strengthen the efforts of Nigerian traders and critical informal sector of the economy by creating effective and efficient interaction on issues affecting their well-being and providing solutions like curbing multiple tax regime, unifying and codifying an ICT user-friendly system for ensuring an integrated tax system with improved database that will take proper care of numerous concerns of traders, marketers, distributors and haulage operators.

In doing this according to Hon Johnson, “it is hoped that the Executive Order 5 of the Federal Government which contemplates Ease of Doing Business will bring back maximum confidence in Government- Private Sector Business Relations and cascade down to the businesses of the rural population”.

Hon Johnson further noted that Attendees to the meeting who are majorly the state representatives, members of the steering committe, Zonal coordinators and Exco’s will resume operations in all the states with immediate effect noting that the implementation of the programme which in him words comes with several packages will further cater for the millions of the informal sector amongst which includes but not limited to access to single digit Loan, access to grant, health insurance, promotion of export of goods and services, and other value proposition.

Hon Johnson regretted the unfair manner in which the issues of multiple taxation has drastically affected the defenseless traders and call for total support of both the government and the general public to achieve an inclusive national solidarity towards Nigeria’s growth.

MATAN is a multi stakeholders umbrella body of the informal sectors socio-economic space and has been saddled with the responsibility of administration and management of affairs of the biggest informal sector cluster, over the years with over 40 million documented membership across all the 774and Area Councils in Nigeria.

Amongst some of its notable partners include the FIRS, JTB, Banks, Insurance companies, ALGON and other private sectors of the economy.

CNPP, CSOs Blame Smear Campaign Against Naval Chief Ogalla On Frustrated Oil Thieves

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and over 38 Civil Society Organisations, under the umbrella of the Coalition Of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have described online reports linking Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to alleged multibillion naira oil bunkering and contract-splitting fraud as “the handiwork of a frustrated syndicate involved in stealing of Nigeria’s crude oil.”

Some online media platforms had reposted an allegation that a preliminary investigations estimated that the Naval Chief had accepted over $170 million in bribes over the past six months alone.

However, in a statement jointly signed by the CNPP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema and the National Secretary of the CNCSOs, Alhaji Ali Abacha, they described the allegations as “dead on arrival as efforts to truncate the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s renewed quest to mitigate the stealing of the country’s crude oil is the target of the disgruntled ring’s attack on Ogalla.

“We strongly believe that it was based on Ogalla’s track records of service that prompted Mr. President to trust him with the appointment in the first place and he has in the last six months shown that President Tinubu did not make any mistake in his choice of the Naval Chief.

“It has since become evident that since the Chief of Naval Staff launched the Nigerian Navy’s “Operation Delta Sanity”, which has been embraced by the government and leaders of the Niger Delta states, the oil thieves are increasingly uncomfortable.

“The new anti-crude oil theft tactical operation initiated by the Chief of Naval Staff and his effort to provide necessary equipment for personnel have become a serious nightmare for the enemies of the country’s economy due to its holistic and robust roadmap against crude oil theft and other forms of illegalities on Nigeria’s territorial waters.

“The Nigerian Navy in its reaction to the syndicated allegations expressly disclosed that all the vessels alleged to have been released, which was the basis of the bogus $170 million allegedly received by the Naval Chief in bribes, are still in the custody and undergoing investigation.

“The Navy said unambiguously and we quote: “Indeed, all arrested vessels mentioned in the publication that were involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering are being investigated and none of such vessels has been released as alleged.”

“So, if the basis for the allegation, which is the arrested vessels, are still in custody, we call on the Chief of Naval Staff to disregard the detractors and continue with his renewed efforts against oil thieves in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigerians are currently suffering from severe economic hardship and we urge President Tinubu and the Naval Chief not to be deterred by the smear tactic and discrediting actions of the oil stealing syndicate who are increasing unable to continue in their nefarious trade.

“It is on record that the CNPP and CNCSOs have been in the forefront of the agitation for an end to the brazen thieving of Nigeria’s crude oil in the last eight years and we will back every genuine efforts aimed mitigating the age-long economic sabotage for the benefit of the suffering masses.

“On the contract splitting allegation, the Navy has issued a clear response and there is no need over-flogging a dead horse as we call on President Tinubu not to succumb to the antics of the already drowning oil thieves who would naturally fight back by all means possible, including the ongoing syndicated blackmail”, the CNPP and the CSOs said.

OPPO’s 48-Month Fluency Protection also means Reno11 is optimised for today, tomorrow, and years to come.

Flagship-level Connectivity and an End to Battery Anxiety

Reno11 is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset, delivering 6nm computing that makes confident multi-tasking, gaming and demanding tasks like 4K video capture possible.

Up to 12GB RAM and an additional 12GB available with RAM Expansion means Reno11 can work across multiple apps and games without background apps being closed. And with 128GB or 256GB storage and storage expansion of up to 2TB via microSD card, enjoy a library of offline movies and games, making Reno11 a perfect travel companion.

For stable signal you can rely on, whether browsing, talking or texting, OPPO’s self-developed network optimisation engine, LinkBoost, achieves up to 100% higher signal transmission and 44% stronger reception than competitor devices. LinkBoost combines AI network selection and a 360-degree surround antenna design for the most stable signal possible with minimum downtime.

For Reno11 users in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico, OPPO has taken LinkBoost even further, tuning the technology to get you back online up to 87% faster than competing devices after leaving an elevator, dropping signal in a fast-moving vehicle, a crowded environment or when underground.

Go the distance with Reno11’s long-lasting, large 5000mAh battery, confidently getting you through a full, connected day, and with OPPO’s Battery Health Engine, look forward to four years of day-long use. When you do need to power up, unlock 67W SUPERVOOCTM Flash Charging4 using the supplied charger for a 33% top-up in 10 minutes, and a 100% charge in just 45 minutes.
