Osinbajo Represents Buhari At ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit On Political Situation In Burkina Faso, Mali & Guinea

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, departs Abuja this morning for Accra, Ghana to represent Nigeria at an Extraordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government deliberating today on the political situation in Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea.

The meeting which is coming as part of the resolutions reached at last week’s virtual meeting chaired by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, will review the report of the ECOWAS delegation despatched to Quagadougou to meet with the military junta who recently seized power in Burkina Faso.

The summit is being attended by regional leaders who will be considering imposing additional sanctions after the country was suspended from the regional body last week.

Last Monday, soldiers forced the removal of democratically elected President Roch March Kabore from office in a military coup. The military takeover of government in Burkina Faso follows the same occurrence in Mali and Guinea recently.

It would be recalled that the President has been delegating the Vice President to represent Nigeria at a series of ECOWAS leaders’ summits on the issues of undemocratic, military takeover of governments in the region.

The Vice President was accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, Presidential Special Adviser on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, himself also an Ambassador, and other top Nigerian diplomats. The VP is expected back in Abuja later today.

Minister Submits International Labour Organization Convention to Tackle Violence, Harassment in Workplace

South Africa’s Employment and Labour Minister T.W Nxesi today officially handed over SA’s documents for registration and ratification with the International Labour Organization (ILO’s) convention dealing with violence and harassment in the workplace.

Minister Nxesi said the documents have been endorsed by the SA government and the instruments will now be submitted for ratification with the Director-General of the International Labour Office of the ILO. He said the submission of ratification documents has been in the making for the past two years.

“The C190 – provides a solid policy base to fight discrimination and gender based violence. The department in partnership with social partners have now developed a draft code of good practice for comment,” said Minister Nxesi.

The Minister added that of significance to the ratification was the fact that this coincides with the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence and that violence and harassment are a human rights violation and abuse and this instrument (the convention) provides a clear guideline for course of action to deal with the ‘pandemic’.

According to ILO C190 is important – because violence and harassment in the world of work cannot be tolerated.

The Convention 190 (C190) provides for protection of workers and other persons in the world of work, including employees as defined.
Once a member signs the C190, they commit to taking appropriate measures to monitor and enforce national laws and regulations regarding violence and harassment in the world of work.
The convention shall be binding only upon those members of the International Labour Organization whose ratifications have been registered with the Director-General of the International Labour Office.
It will also ensure easy access to appropriate and effective remedies and safe, fair and effective reporting and dispute resolution mechanisms and procedures in cases of violence and harassment in the world of work.

A country signing C190 has an obligation to ensure enforcement and appropriate remedies.

By submitting the instruments South Africa joins Argentina, Ecuador, Italy, Fiji, Mauritius, Namibia, Somalia, and Uruguay – that have ratified the convention.

ILO’s SA-based Executive Director Joni Musabayana said the C190 was the first Convention which truly reflect the African continent’s input.

2023: SERG Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Gov. Umahi to Convince Region Stakeholders on His Mission in APC

A frontline pan-Igbo socio-political organisation, the South East Revival Group (SERG) has demanded full convincing explanation from Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State on his mission in the All Progressives Congress (APC), giving him a 14-day ultimatum to do so.

The President and National Coordinator of the group, Chief Willy Ezugwu in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday said “the reason given by the Governor for jumping into the APC boat at a time South East is agitating to be given the opportunity to produce the next President of Nigeria in 2023 is not justifiable and therefore unacceptable.

“It is very obvious that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has maintained anti-South East perception and its hatred for the people of the region became very obvious since the party began its appointment for several offices, except the constitutionally guaranteed appointment like ministerial positions.

“We have seen persons of South East extraction vacate offices and people from other regions replace them.

“So, for such a South East leader like Gover Umahi who is occupying an exhaulted position as the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum to suddenly wake up and make the kind of political adventure he has made is very suicidal and requires convincing explanations.

“The Governor has given a political explanation as to why he joined the perceived enemy of the South East, but his reason is hereby rejected as it is not cogent enough.

“We hereby give the Governor seven days to convince all South East stakeholders on his real mission in the APC and how his mission relates to the ongoing agitation for the South East to be given the opportunity to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor come 2023.

“For us, any political party that will not be favourably disposed to a South East Presidency in 2023 is part of the enemies of the region and equity demands that an Igbo emerge the next President.

“We hereby warn all political, religious, and traditional leaders in the South East to be careful about their political moves and relationships with political parties ahead of 2023 general election as any effort to sabotage South East interests as regards producing the next Nigerian President will never be acceptable and shall only be resisted”, the SERG warned.

SWAIAP Begins AGM Today Ahead of 2020 Inaugural Investiture

The Society for West African Internal Audit Practitioners (SWAIAP) is set to hold its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) ahead of the society’s 2020 inaugural induction and investiture. The investiture tagged “Operation 1,000 inductees” and other internal audit matters, including the Society’s 2020 budget are expected to top the agenda at the AGM.

President/CEO of SWAIAP, Patrick O. Nzechukwu, in a statement issued on Friday noted that the AGM holds in Lagos on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

The statement noted that “SWAIAP was incorporated to arouse the consciousness and relevance of internal auditing in West African States, principally to institutionalize internal auditing as a foremost tool for anti-corruption, anti-wastes, inefficiencies, ineffectiveness and other forms of financial and non-financial risks through evidential assurance of effective corporate governance, risk management and internal control processes.”

According to him, the society was born to train and equip internal auditors, encourage the publishing of internal audit textbooks, both study and practice manuals, to encourage tertiary institutions and professional training institutions, including practitioners in West Africa to incorporate internal auditing in their syllabuses as it is done in other developed economies, among others.

Meanwhile, the first Executive President and pioneer of the society has drafted a bill titled: Nigerian Internal Audit Practice, Regulation and Administration Agency and Other Related Matters Bill 2013.

The bill, if promulgated into law, will empower the internal auditors to perform their watchdog and assurance services with greater independence and has great potential to enhance the knowledge and practice of internal auditing in Nigeria and enthrone sanity and stewardship decorum in our systems.

The Chief Executive of SWAIAP hopes that the bill becomes a prototype to be adopted across West African sub-region.
