Synergy Between Ministries of Defence and Interior Critical to the Nation’s Security — Defence Minister Musa

Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has asserted that strong bond and shared responsibility between the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Interior is critical to the nation’s security, safety, and development. He made the assertion during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Interior on Friday 16th January, 2026 in Abuja

The Minister emphasized that the Ministries of Defence and Interior represent two sides of the same coin as both handles the external and internal security of the country and whose roles are increasingly intertwined due to contemporary threats such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and cross-border crimes noting that without security, sustainable national development cannot be achieved.

Speaking further, Gen Musa emphasized the importance of seamless collaboration, intelligence sharing, joint operations, and coordinated responses among the Armed Forces, Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Correctional Service, and other security agencies acknowledging that no single institution can effectively address Nigeria’s complex security challenges in isolation, hence the need for a collaborative approach.

He disclosed that efforts are ongoing to strengthen border management, protect critical national assets and infrastructure, and institutionalise structured cooperation through inter-ministerial and inter-agency frameworks.

He informed that enhanced capacity building, joint training, and the use of technology for real-time situational awareness remain key priorities, while reaffirming his commitment by assuring Nigerians that the Defence establishment will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Interior and all relevant stakeholders, to build a stronger, more responsive, and unified national security architecture in the interest of peace, stability, and public confidence.

Responding, the Honourable Minister of Interior Dr.Olatunji Ojo said that security is a combination of both internal and external. If the internal security agencies are up to the task, the military will be able to face what they need to do. According to him, “our national security architecture stands on the tripod of intelligence, internal security and the military”, adding that intelligence is key and describing ministries of Defence and Interior like siamese twins as a result must work together.

He stated that a safe border is a safe nation, noting that no country can guarantee the safety of its people if it is unable to effectively protect its borders.

He stressed that enhanced border management remains central to national security, peace, and stability, and requires sustained collaboration between internal security agencies and the Ministry of Defence to succeed.

Ojo congratulated the Honourable Minister of Defence on his appointment and pledged to work together with him to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and expressed optimism that both ministries will work very well.

The week-long activities will culminate on Thursday, 15 January 2026, the Armed Forces Remembrance Day proper, with a National Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the National Arcade in Abuja and simultaneously in all state capitals across the federation.

The ceremony, which begins at 8:00 am, will feature wreath-laying by the President, the Vice-President, the Service Chiefs and members of the Diplomatic Corps. Other highlights include a 21-gun salute, the sounding of the Last Post, a national minute of silence in honour of the fallen, and a ceremonial parade involving the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force and Legionnaires.

The Ministry of Defence described the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Week as a period dedicated to celebrating courage, fostering national unity and honouring sacrifice.

The programme, according to the ministry, carefully balances solemn remembrance with expressions of national pride, while showcasing the heroism, professionalism and humanity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, whose service continues to underpin the nation’s peace, security and collective identity.

Security Wins: Court Throws Out Suit Against FG’s Efforts As Northern Committee Jubilates

The Northern Committee for Defence of Human Rights (NCDHR) has expressed its unreserved support and appreciation for the recent ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which categorically dismissed the suit seeking to compel the Federal Government to investigate the alleged links between the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, and the operations of bandits in Zamfara State.

It called on Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State to desist from politicising the security situation and cooperate with the federal government.

The Convener of the group, Tijjani Hashimu, in a statement noted that “this decision is not only a reinforcement of the rule of law but also a significant affirmation of the commendable efforts made by the federal government in the fight against the alarming scourge of insecurity that has plagued Northern Nigeria.”

The group observed that in a time when the security situation in various parts of Nigeria remains a critical concern, “it is heartening to witness the judiciary standing firm against attempts to undermine the progress realized in countering the rampaging threats posed by banditry and related crimes.”

The Northern human rights body maintained that the ruling “aptly recognizes that continued legal challenges, particularly those lacking substantive evidence, may detract from the collective focus required to combat these menacing security issues.

“The court’s dismissal of the suit serves as a clarion call to all stakeholders to rally around the ongoing efforts to restore peace and security to our communities.”

The NCDHR acknowledged that the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, had taken commendable strides toward addressing the multifaceted challenges of insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

“From strategic military operations targeting kidnapping kingpins to the enhanced collaboration with local vigilante groups, the government’s endeavours have laid a foundational framework for rebuilding the trust of the citizens and ameliorating the fear that has gripped our communities.”

According to them, under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, the ongoing successes in the fight against banditry — especially in states such as Zamfara, where the menace has been particularly acute — underscore the importance of a unified approach to solving security challenges.

“The recent successes of our security forces in apprehending notorious criminals and dismantling their networks buttress the necessity for all citizens to support the government’s initiatives aimed at restoring law and order.

“While we wholeheartedly welcome the court’s ruling, we also implore the citizens of Northern Nigeria to remain vigilant and resilient in the face of adversity. It is essential for us to collectively debunk any unfounded allegations that could distract from the real issues at hand.

“There must be a significant emphasis on fostering peace, engaging in constructive dialogue, and promoting the significant role of community participation in security measures.

“We also call upon all relevant stakeholders — traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organizations — to foster a united front in confronting insecurity.

“Together, we must forge avenues for dialogue that will aid in intelligence gathering and community resilience against criminal activities. The task of restoring peace in our communities cannot be left solely to the government; it requires a concerted effort that encompasses every facet of society.

“The NCDHR reiterates its unwavering commitment to supporting the federal government in all endeavors to combat insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

“We call on Governor Dauda Lawal to desist politicising the security situation and cooperate with the federal government efforts.

“We also encourage citizens to maintain their faith in the judicial process and our security institutions, and we remain hopeful that through collective efforts, the dream of a peaceful and secure Northern Nigeria is within our grasp”, the group said.

Massive Reshuffling Hit Zamfara Civil Service after Leaked Memo Showing Financing of Terrorism, Banditry

Zamfara State has been thrust into a maelstrom of political upheaval following the emergence of a leaked memorandum purportedly implicating senior government officials, including the Governor, in the financing of terrorism and banditry. This bombshell revelation has ignited widespread indignation and outrage, both domestically and internationally.

The fallout from this explosive exposé is an unprecedented and abrupt reshuffling of key civil servants across the state, in a move that has sent shockwaves through the bureaucracy.

Sources within the Zamfara State Government House have revealed that the Governor was visibly incensed upon learning of the leaked memo, which allegedly detailed financial transactions facilitating banditry and further entangling high-ranking government officials in the scandal.

At the epicenter of the Governor’s anger was reportedly the Commissioner of Finance, who, as the overseer of the state’s financial management, is responsible for orchestrating the movement of accounting staff within the bureaucracy.

A Strategic Move or A Defensive Maneuver?

In an attempt to mitigate the fallout from the public embarrassment and intense backlash from international human rights organizations, Governor Dauda Lawal swiftly initiated a comprehensive reorganization of civil servants within the state bureaucracy, specifically focusing on the treasury department. This strategic move was formally communicated through a subsequent memo, meticulously outlining the extensive reshuffling of civil servants.

According to credible sources, the Governor’s office, in an unconventional and unexpected maneuver, sidestepped the Commissioner for Finance and instead entrusted the Head of Service, Ahmad Aliyu Liman, with the sensitive task of orchestrating the “special” redeployment of treasury staff.

This unusual deviation from established protocol has raised eyebrows, sparking speculation about the motivations behind this decision and the extent of the Governor’s involvement in the treasury department’s affairs.

The follow-up memo obtained by our investigative team, with the reference number HOS/Z/844/VOL.III, outlines the redeployment of various senior treasury staff, including directors and deputy directors in key financial departments.

Here are some of the notable redeployments:

Idris Bawa (GL-15): Moved from the Accountant General’s Office to a new post in the same office.

Aminu Musa Gusau (GL-15): Shifted from the Sub-Treasury to become the Deputy Accountant General.

Isah Garba Nasarawa Godel (GL-15): Appointed Acting Director of Expenditure Control.

Shehu Balarabe Anka (GL-15): Moved to the IPPIS (Salaries) department as Acting Director of Funds.

The comprehensive reshuffling affected over a dozen senior civil servants, many of whom held critical positions in the state’s financial management and control systems. Sources inside the government claim that these postings are part of a broader move to sanitize the state’s financial sector in line with civil service reforms. However, the sudden nature of the redeployment raises questions about its true intent.

An Act of Reform or Damage Control?

Interestingly, the Commissioner of Finance, typically entrusted with overseeing the assignment of accounting staff within the state bureaucracy, was conspicuously bypassed in this reshuffling exercise, it was learnt.

According to well-placed sources, this decision stemmed from a profound lack of confidence in his office, coupled with deep-seated concerns that sensitive documents may continue to surface in the media.

The strategic redeployment of key financial personnel coincides with escalating suspicions that the Governor’s office is endeavoring to conceal the damning allegations outlined in the initial leaked memo.

While the government asserts that these personnel changes constitute part of comprehensive financial sector reforms, critics vehemently argue that the Governor’s true intention is to insulate himself from intensified scrutiny.

The timing of this reshuffling has also raised significant concerns. If, as the Governor’s office maintains, the initial allegations of financial support to bandit leaders were entirely fabricated, it beggars the question: why the apparent haste to reassign key staff and prevent further leaks?

The emergence of the leaked documents has galvanized international and local organizations to demand a thorough, impartial investigation into the state’s financial dealings.

Zamfara’s Dark Web of Terrorism Links?

Zamfara State’s troubles have intensified with the surfacing of fresh allegations linking Governor Dauda Lawal to Farouq Abdulmutallab, the infamous perpetrator of the 2009 ”ailed terrorist attack. Although the specifics of this purported link remain unsubstantiated, the mere mention of Abdulmutallab’s name in conjunction with Zamfara’s escalating crisis has significantly exacerbated suspicions of the Governor’s involvement in terrorism financing.

Local leaders and astute political observers are gravely concerned that should these allegations be validated, Zamfara, already a volatile hotbed of banditry and insecurity, may descend into even greater instability.

The confluence of events – the leak of sensitive documents, the ensuing reshuffling of key personnel, and the Governor’s alleged ties to global terrorism – raises profoundly disturbing questions about the quality of governance and security apparatus in the state. The potential implications of these allegations are far-reaching, threatening to undermine the fragile stability of the region and perpetuate an environment conducive to terrorist activities.

Political Fallout and the way Ahead

To date, the Governor’s office has remained conspicuously silent, failing to issue an official statement addressing the leaked memo or the recent reshuffling, beyond the dubious assertion that these measures constitute part of broader “civil service reforms.”

Nevertheless, pressure continues to intensify from diverse quarters, with numerous voices demanding the Governor’s immediate resignation and a comprehensive, impartial investigation into the financial transactions of the Zamfara State Government.

The strategic redeployment of key treasury personnel may temporarily appease certain elements within the government, but it will do little to dispel the pervasive specter of alleged corruption and complicity in terrorist activities now hanging over the state administration.

As the situation continues to unfold, attention remains fixed on Zamfara State, with all eyes watching for developments.

The true intentions behind the government’s actions, whether genuine reform or an intricate cover-up will likely become increasingly transparent as investigations progress, shedding light on the veracity of the allegations.

The Unanswered Questions

The question remains: if the initial memo alleging the Governor’s collusion with bandit leaders was indeed fabricated and tampered with, why the abrupt shift in focus towards preventing government document leaks, implicitly acknowledging the veracity of the prior accusations?

The swift reshuffling of civil servants and the deliberate bypassing of the Commissioner of Finance in this process betray a state of palpable panic and desperation, suggesting a frantic endeavor to reassert control and contain potential damage. This sudden and drastic action raises more questions than answers, casting doubt on the Governor’s professed innocence and fueling speculation about his actual involvement in the allegations.

The haste with which the Governor’s office has moved to reorganize key personnel and sidestep established protocols implies a profound sense of vulnerability, underscoring the likelihood that the initial memo struck closer to truth than initially acknowledged.

The Governor of Zamfara stands at a precarious juncture, faced with a daunting decision that will determine the fate of his administration and the state’s role in combating terrorism. The recent reshuffling, ostensibly presented as a facet of civil service reform, appears to be a strategic maneuver aimed at mitigating the fallout from the damning allegations contained in the leaked memo.

As clamors for accountability intensify, both domestically and internationally, the leadership of Zamfara State teeters on the brink of collapse, its credibility severely compromised. The citizens of Zamfara have lost faith in Governor Dauda Lawal’s ability to ensure their safety and security, which now seems an elusive dream on the verge of extinction.

The state’s pleas for help have become a desperate cry, borne out of frustration and despair. The people’s aspirations for a leader who would usher in an era of peace and stability, freeing them from the scourge of insecurity, have been cruelly dashed.

The lingering questions remain: Will terrorism ever be eradicated in Zamfara State? Will a worthy leader emerge to rescue its people from this abyss of fear and uncertainty?

Northern Groups Slam 180 Lawmakers’ ‘Reckless’ Endorsement Of Terrorism

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly condemned the recent call by 180 members of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government.

Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, National Coordinator of the CNG, described the lawmakers’ demand as “reckless” and “a betrayal of the trust reposed in them by their constituents.”

He noted that the CNG had reported Kanu to the UN for his acts of terror against innocent Nigerians in 2017 and advocated for declaring his group a terrorist organization.

“This is a slap in the face of the Nigerian people, and a brazen attempt to subvert the rule of law and undermine the authority of the Nigerian judiciary,” Charanchi said. “We are shocked that lawmakers, including those from Northern Nigeria, are supporting the release of a terrorist being held on charges before a court of competent jurisdiction.”

The CNG recalled the Nigerian government’s declaration of Kanu as a terrorist on June 27, 2021, and his subsequent arrest and charging for his persistent call for anarchy in the nation, brutal killings of citizens, and destruction of properties.

The groups asked, “Where were they when Nnamdi Kanu and his people were killing and are still killing the Northerners in the east? Where were they when the properties of the Northerners were destroyed by him?”

The CNG leader also questioned the motivations of the lawmakers, saying, “Are they elected for their personal benefits or for the interest of the citizens? This is a clear case of legislative rascality, and we reject it in its entirety.”

CNG commended Hon. Aminu Jamo, representing Daura/Sandamu/Mai Adua federal constituency, for his courageous and patriotic act of publishing a disclaimer on the matter.

The coalition also called on Nigerians to rise up and reject this “travesty,” standing together against terrorism and those who enable it.

“We will not let the blood of our loved ones be in vain,” Charanchi said. “We will not let terrorism prevail. We urge Mr. President to ignore this reckless call and ensure that justice is served.”

CNPP, CSOs Blame Smear Campaign Against Naval Chief Ogalla On Frustrated Oil Thieves

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and over 38 Civil Society Organisations, under the umbrella of the Coalition Of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have described online reports linking Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to alleged multibillion naira oil bunkering and contract-splitting fraud as “the handiwork of a frustrated syndicate involved in stealing of Nigeria’s crude oil.”

Some online media platforms had reposted an allegation that a preliminary investigations estimated that the Naval Chief had accepted over $170 million in bribes over the past six months alone.

However, in a statement jointly signed by the CNPP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema and the National Secretary of the CNCSOs, Alhaji Ali Abacha, they described the allegations as “dead on arrival as efforts to truncate the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s renewed quest to mitigate the stealing of the country’s crude oil is the target of the disgruntled ring’s attack on Ogalla.

“We strongly believe that it was based on Ogalla’s track records of service that prompted Mr. President to trust him with the appointment in the first place and he has in the last six months shown that President Tinubu did not make any mistake in his choice of the Naval Chief.

“It has since become evident that since the Chief of Naval Staff launched the Nigerian Navy’s “Operation Delta Sanity”, which has been embraced by the government and leaders of the Niger Delta states, the oil thieves are increasingly uncomfortable.

“The new anti-crude oil theft tactical operation initiated by the Chief of Naval Staff and his effort to provide necessary equipment for personnel have become a serious nightmare for the enemies of the country’s economy due to its holistic and robust roadmap against crude oil theft and other forms of illegalities on Nigeria’s territorial waters.

“The Nigerian Navy in its reaction to the syndicated allegations expressly disclosed that all the vessels alleged to have been released, which was the basis of the bogus $170 million allegedly received by the Naval Chief in bribes, are still in the custody and undergoing investigation.

“The Navy said unambiguously and we quote: “Indeed, all arrested vessels mentioned in the publication that were involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering are being investigated and none of such vessels has been released as alleged.”

“So, if the basis for the allegation, which is the arrested vessels, are still in custody, we call on the Chief of Naval Staff to disregard the detractors and continue with his renewed efforts against oil thieves in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigerians are currently suffering from severe economic hardship and we urge President Tinubu and the Naval Chief not to be deterred by the smear tactic and discrediting actions of the oil stealing syndicate who are increasing unable to continue in their nefarious trade.

“It is on record that the CNPP and CNCSOs have been in the forefront of the agitation for an end to the brazen thieving of Nigeria’s crude oil in the last eight years and we will back every genuine efforts aimed mitigating the age-long economic sabotage for the benefit of the suffering masses.

“On the contract splitting allegation, the Navy has issued a clear response and there is no need over-flogging a dead horse as we call on President Tinubu not to succumb to the antics of the already drowning oil thieves who would naturally fight back by all means possible, including the ongoing syndicated blackmail”, the CNPP and the CSOs said.
