NASS Leadership: More Protests Trail APC Zoning Formula

The controversy trailing the All Progressives Congress (APC) zoning formula for the position of presiding officers of the 10th National Assembly is yet to abate, as youths drawn from the North Central have said the region would not settle for anything less.

The youths, under the aegis of the North Central Youths Stakeholders Forum and North Central Youths Stakeholders Forum and the Middle Belt Forum, specifically said the region would only accept the Senate Presidency and Speakership of the House of Representatives.

In a statement, the Leader of the NCYSF, Mohammed A Mohammed, said the groups were behind the decision reached at the recent meeting held by governors of the region and National Assembly members-elect, not to accept the decision of the party.

Mohammed contended that the APC zoning arrangement was a deliberate attempt to undermine the contributions of the North-Central to the survival of the party and its victory at the February 25th general elections and subsequent polls.

He said: “We find it unbecoming that other regions that performed abysmally at the polls are given preference in zoning arrangement of the APC NWC while relegating the North Central which contributed optimally to the victory of the APC and its Presidential Candidate would be literally denied any principal position in the coming National Assembly.

“It is all the more insulting that even to consider the North Central for the third position in the legislative houses is subject of debate and speculation.

“In the light of this, we wish to invite the intervention of all stakeholders in the APC to impress on the NWC of the party and all those behind this agenda to rescind, withdraw, review and reverse this unpopular decision and in the alternative, allow the elected federal legislators to form their leadership.”

He called on the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to stand on the side of truth and justice by supporting the North Central.

“We call on the incoming President to do all he could to reclaim his statesmanship by supporting what clearly is the popular will of the people against those who want to subvert it.

It does not gladden anyone to think that the relegation of the North Central after the central role it played in the emergence of the coming administration in spite of all the odds, is calculated to diminish the rising political relevance of the region.

“For the avoidance of doubt therefore, and for those who have ears to hear, the North Central would never settle for any other position lower than the Senate Presidency and Speakership of the House of Representatives,” he said

“IPAC is surprised at the comments made by the Labour party chairman.

“We are glad that as the campaign period commences, Security Agencies have enlightened us on how to conduct our campaigns in order to achieve rancour free campaigns.

Minister Submits International Labour Organization Convention to Tackle Violence, Harassment in Workplace

South Africa’s Employment and Labour Minister T.W Nxesi today officially handed over SA’s documents for registration and ratification with the International Labour Organization (ILO’s) convention dealing with violence and harassment in the workplace.

Minister Nxesi said the documents have been endorsed by the SA government and the instruments will now be submitted for ratification with the Director-General of the International Labour Office of the ILO. He said the submission of ratification documents has been in the making for the past two years.

“The C190 – provides a solid policy base to fight discrimination and gender based violence. The department in partnership with social partners have now developed a draft code of good practice for comment,” said Minister Nxesi.

The Minister added that of significance to the ratification was the fact that this coincides with the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence and that violence and harassment are a human rights violation and abuse and this instrument (the convention) provides a clear guideline for course of action to deal with the ‘pandemic’.

According to ILO C190 is important – because violence and harassment in the world of work cannot be tolerated.

The Convention 190 (C190) provides for protection of workers and other persons in the world of work, including employees as defined.
Once a member signs the C190, they commit to taking appropriate measures to monitor and enforce national laws and regulations regarding violence and harassment in the world of work.
The convention shall be binding only upon those members of the International Labour Organization whose ratifications have been registered with the Director-General of the International Labour Office.
It will also ensure easy access to appropriate and effective remedies and safe, fair and effective reporting and dispute resolution mechanisms and procedures in cases of violence and harassment in the world of work.

A country signing C190 has an obligation to ensure enforcement and appropriate remedies.

By submitting the instruments South Africa joins Argentina, Ecuador, Italy, Fiji, Mauritius, Namibia, Somalia, and Uruguay – that have ratified the convention.

ILO’s SA-based Executive Director Joni Musabayana said the C190 was the first Convention which truly reflect the African continent’s input.

Governor Inuwa Receives New Police AIG For Zone 12

…Seeks Continued Synergy With The Nigerian Police

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya says community policing is a matter of priority to his administration in its drive to sustain the prevailing peace and security in the state.

He stated this while playing host to the newly posted Assistant Inspector General of Police for zone 12 in charge of Gombe and Bauchi States, AIG Audu Adamu Madaki during a familiarisation visit to the Governor in his office.

The Governor said to buttress the seriousness with which his administration views the issue of community policing, he created a ministry for internal security and ethical orientation with a view to having a more robust and constant engagement with the security agencies and relevant stakeholders.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya said the idea behind creating the State Ministry of Internal Security and Ethical Orientation was to get to the grassroot and to strengthen synergy with the traditional rulers so that security of lives and property can be guaranteed.

He said, “the issue of community policing which you mentioned is really a priority to us here in Gombe State and I know is a priority for the whole country too. So we must provide the framework for its success. The Commissioner for internal security is here and is only this time around that on coming to office we created that Ministry because that is the vision that we have to create a very robust, deep rooted and functional security architecture to ensure close monitoring by the government and major security agencies especially the police.

“Is not easy to implement because it has a lot of financial implications but I know with your support we can achieve the target of ensuring a functional security that is beneficial to our people”.

He explained that other challenges abound due to the centrality of the State at the midst of the north east, making it a preferred destination for IDPs owing to its peaceful atmosphere and easy access.

While describing peace, security and tranquillity as the bedrock of any meaningful development, the Governor assured that his administration will continue to priotise the safely and well being of the citizenry.

He noted that the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the State has accorded his administration the opportunity to provide services to the people spanning through social, economic and infrastructural development.

He described the relationship between the Gombe State Government and the Nigerian Police as symbiotic which presupposes that as the State provides support to the police, the force should on the other hand redouble its efforts towards the maintenance of peace and security.

Earlier speaking, AIG Audu Adamu Madaki described Gombe as a perfect State in terms of crime prevention, detection and prosecution. He commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for taking proactive measures in addressing security issues in Gombe State and for his support to the Nigerian police and its sister- agencies.

“By my personal assessment, Gombe is a quite State in the North East and not only in North Eastern states but in Northern Nigeria because there is a superb synergy among all the security agencies and of course a very superb support from the State Government and I believe if this synergy continues as the Governor is demomstrating, Gombe State will continue to be a safe haven in the north east and the entire nation”.

UAE Debunks Ban on Work Permit To Nigerians

The United Arab Emirates’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Fahad Obaid AI Taffaq, has said there is no official communication placed on issuance of work permit for Nigerians living and working in the United Arab Emirates.

Ambassador AI Taffaq stated this when he received Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) at the Embassy in Abuja.

He said just like others, he read about the ban in the social media, stressing that the UAE has no restrictions against any nationality. He said there are possibly isolated cases of individuals whose work visas were not renewed for one reason or the other.

He added that only last week UAE issued over 50 visas to Nigerians and stressed that there are thousands of Nigerians working and living legally in the UAE.

The UAE Envoy said they were optimistic that Emirates Airlines would soon resume flights into Nigeria.

Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM said the clarification is really reassuring given a barrage of calls and inquiries by Nigerians within and outside the UAE on official stoppage of issuance of work permit to Nigerians in the UAE.

NiDCOM Boss urged Nigerians in the UAE to always obey the laws of their host country, be good Ambassadors and excel in whatever they do.

She further adds that any Nigerian with consular issues should approach the Nigerian Mission in UAE for advice and clarifications as each case would be treated on its own merit.

Hearing on March 29 Order Between Abdullahi Maje, ALGON and ALGON President Hon. Kolade David Alabi Fixed For October 11

Arising from it’s sitting on Friday 23 July 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Hon. Justice I. E Ekwo has fixed October 11, 2021 for the Motion to set aside the Order of 29th March 2021 obtained and bandied about by Mohammed Abubakar and his collaborator, Hon. Abdullahi Maje, the Suleja Local Government Chairman.

It will be recalled that in filing the Suit and obtaining the Court Order, Mohammed Abubakar misled the Federal High Court into believing he had the consent and authority of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Board of Trustees to file the suit in Court.

Following the same pattern of disdain for judicial proceedings, Abdullahi Maje was said to have continued to misrepresent the contents of the Order to the general public!

Regarding the Order, Hon Abdullahi S. Maje had falsely claimed, amongst other things, that: The Hon. Judge restrained Hon. Alabi Kolade David from acting as the National President of ALGON; that the Hon. Judge directed the inauguration of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) for ALGON.

In obtaining the Order, Abdullahi S. Maje and his Co-traveller, Mohammed Abubakar, was reported to have also misled the men and officers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command into believing the Court Order empowered them to take over ALGON.

The court Order was obtained on 29th March 2021 by suppressing from the Court, the fact that ALGON General Assembly, which the plaintiff sought to restrained, had already been conducted and concluded five days earlier on 24 March 2021.

When the matter was called up on Friday, the Counsel to Mohammed Abubakar and Hon. Abdullahi Maje expressed unpreparedness to proceed having only served his response on the Lead Defendant Counsel to ALGON on Friday morning, right in open court.

The matter was consequently adjourned to October 11, 2021 by the presiding Judge.

ALGON, an Association whose foundation is anchored on rule of law, has maintained its call on the general public to be wary of all falsehood peddled against the Alabi Kolade David led national leadership and pledges to continue to serve the citizens within the ambit of Law and Order.

HERDSMEN: COMPENSATE FARMERS FOR LOSS OF CROPS – MURIC TELLS FG

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Federal Government to compensate farmers whose crops were destroyed by herdsmen’s cows. MURIC suggests that the compensation which may be instalmental, should be paid to farmers whose farms were destroyed in all states of the federation. The group said it now has concrete evidence of the culpability of herdsmen, including video clips in which cows destroyed farms belonging to members of the organization.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the director of the human rights organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Friday, 5th February, 2021.

The statement reads:

“MURIC is now in possession of indubitable evidence of the destruction of crops on farmlands by cows brought by herdsmen. We sent out feelers to all states where we have branches of MURIC and the reports are overwhelmingly convincing. We asked our members to supply information on the activities of herdsmen in their states, including Abuja. In fact we were stupefied by the outcome.

“The most recent report from a young member of MURIC in Ogun State who ventured into agriculture reads: ‘Herders invaded my five hectares of rice farm three days ago (Sunday, 31st January, 2021) and it was totally destroyed. The incident happened at the farm of Sanpro Foods, a rice production company whose premises is located at the Oyan farm settlement, Ibaro Rice Village, Ibaro in Abeokuta North Local Government, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The farm is along Igboora Road after the roundabout.’

“The most heart-rending part of the report was towards the end where it added: ‘The most frustrating part is am not getting my investment back and I hate this feeling of ‘nothing can be done’. I don’t know what to do, perhaps I should organise a press conference.’

“As if that was not enough, the mudiir (principal) of a local Arabic school in Lagos also reported another sad incident in which herders brought cows to invade his father’s cashew farm in Ijomu-Oro, Kwara State. Everything was destroyed and he lamented that his father would have realised millions of naira had he been able to harvest his cashew nuts. He added that the fear of herders has forced farmers in Ido-Oro (also in Kwara State) to abandon their farms.

“This is frightening. Farmers in Kwara State are afraid of going to their farms due to the activities of herders. Farmers in Zamfara and Katsina have run away from their farms for fear of being killed or kidnapped by bandits. Farmers in Ilesa, Osun State, those in Igangan, Oyo State and those in Ebonyi live in palpable fear of herders. From where shall food come to our tables? Famine is coming! Cows and bandits have taken over Nigerian farms.

“MURIC charges FG and the state governments to take responsibility. It is very clear that FG is yet to appreciate what farmers are going through in the hands of marauding herdsmen. Perhaps we will appreciate the pain of farmers better when we realise that agriculture essentially entails a long and slow process from clearing to planting and harvesting.

“No crop starts germinating in a single day and ripens for harvest the next day. Both cash and food crops are the outcome of hard work and patient perseverance over time, sometimes two or three years. The shortest is three months for crops like corn and yam. How would you feel if someone just walks in and smashes all what you have been putting together for months or years? We therefore declare that farmers have been patient enough. FG should do something urgently.

“What MURIC will like to suggest is that FG should roll out a compensation programme, albeit instalmentally, to be paid to farmers of all categories who have evidence of loss of crops due to the activities of herders and bandits. This will make government’s policy of bailout comprehensive, fair and balanced.

“We recall our advice to FG two days ago in which we advocated for payment of bailout for herders to enable them buy land from private owners for use as ranches. The compensation we are now asking for farmers who lost their crops will be spread to all parts of the country: farmers in Benue, Ondo, Sokoto, Ekiti, Enugu, Ogun, Katsina, etc will be eligible. This is the way government can take responsibility. We may add here that such compensation will assuage farmers, douse tension across the country and inject a new dose of confidence in Project Nigeria.

“We were motivated to offer this advice after a female member of MURIC related her experience. She reported how she witnessed an argument between some herdsmen and farmers when she travelled to visit her mother in Ilesa in 2019. According to her, the herdsmen had driven cows unto a farm thereby destroying everything in it. The farmer insisted on compensation or there would be trouble and he only backed down after the herdsmen paid the money.

“This example shows that payment of compensation to farmers will bring peace to our troubled land. We are also aware that in the culture of the herdsmen, those who kill their cows can only be forgiven after compensation has been paid.

“We therefore appeal to all ethnic groups who are currently agitating to simmer down. There is no problem without a solution so long as we can have time to sit down and think. We call on the security agencies to descend on criminals among the herdsmen as well as others in society and bring them to book. What we should not do is ethnic profiling. But no tribe has immunity so long as crime has been committed and evidence has been provided.

“We remind Nigerians that wars and conflicts have not yielded positive results anywhere in Africa. It was Herodotus who said, ‘In peace, sons bury their fathers, but in war, fathers bury their sons.’ The question is : do we want to start burying our sons? May Allah forbid. Neither does anyone know who will survive if we start a war. That was why Bertrand Russell said, ‘War does not determine who is right, but who is left’. We hope Nigerians still have time to ponder before we start counting bodybags.”

Isu WomenJoin Imo State, Global Community To Mark #Orange Campaign 2020

Orange Campaign is a global call to prevent, report and raise awareness of the negative impact that gender based violence has on women, girl child, society and the social fabric of a community. This is an annual United Nations campaign which starts today the 25th of November and ends 16th of December.

This year women across the world suffered from COVID-19 and Continued Gender Based Violence Pandemic. Statistics showed a spike in abuse of women during ‘lockdown’ with 1 in 3 women and girls experiencing physical or sexual violence, most frequently by an intimate partner.

The Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State on Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Cllr. Celia Osakwe-Hibbert, who is also an Isu Woman as well as a women’s empowerment activist and currently the new Board Chair of Albertiqs Women’s Foundation, activated her fellow Isu women in Isu Local Government Area headquarters to join the world in raising the profile of this campaign so as to challenge the ugly generational treatment of the female gender!

Hon. Osakwe-Hibbert stated that, “we they Isu women must stand up with women across the world and be counted.

“One violence on a girl child is far too many; one brutalisation, one rape, one mutilation, are all far too many!”

Our correspondent reports that a range of activities will also be taking place in Imo state starting from today and across Nigeria for the next 16days.

Many events are expected to also take place across the world and online. Women and men are encouraged to join nearby events to make this campaign spread far and wide.

71% of all human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls. 3 out of 4 of these women end up sexually exploited!

This is even as the hash tag #SayNoToGenderBasedViolence is currently trending on social media.
