Benue Chief Judge Interferes In LG Tribunal, CNPP, CNCSOs Allege, Threaten Mass Protest

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and the Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have jointly raised alarm over what they describe as a dangerous attempt by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, to manipulate the Local Government Election Petition Appeals Tribunal for political purposes.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Comrade James Ezema, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of CNPP, and Alhaji Ali Abacha, National Secretary of CNCSOs, the groups alleged that Justice Ikpambese orchestrated the removal of Justice Maimuna Ikwulono from the Appeals Tribunal for maintaining her judicial independence. Justice Mohammed has since been appointed in her place, raising serious questions about the credibility of the tribunal’s work.

The CNPP and CNCSOs cited credible reports linking the Chief Judge’s actions to an ongoing political feud with Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia and an alleged alliance with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. George Akume.

They alleged that Justice Ikpambese, who is expected to retire next year, has been promised the Senatorial ticket for Benue North-East (Zone A) in exchange for using his office to weaken the Governor’s political base by removing elected local government chairmen aligned against Akume’s interests.

They noted that so far, tribunal judgments have led to the removal of four out of seven chairmen in Zone A, with no chairmen removed in Zone B — a clear indication of targeted political maneuvering.

The groups recalled that a previous effort by the Benue State House of Assembly to remove Justice Ikpambese through a petition was stalled by interventions from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the National Judicial Council (NJC), both emphasizing strict adherence to due process.

Of particular concern, CNPP and CNCSOs referenced video evidence showing Justice Ikpambese at a political event, where he reportedly boasted — in Tiv language — about his intention to frustrate Governor Alia by influencing tribunal outcomes through selective appointments.

The groups further alleged that the Chief Judge hurriedly constituted an emergency panel within the tribunal’s final month, leading to controversial rulings that ousted elected officials and installed candidates who had not even contested the elections — a development they describe as a “calculated judicial ambush” against the will of the Benue electorate.

As a consequence of these actions, the Benue State Government has reportedly lost control of nine out of twenty-three local governments, deepening political tensions in the state.

The CNPP and CNCSOs categorically condemned the removal of Justice Maimuna Ikwulono on the basis of an uninvestigated petition, insisting that only the NJC has the constitutional authority to discipline judicial officers. They warned that unilateral interference in judicial functions poses a grave threat to democracy and judicial independence.

While commending the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJC for her ongoing efforts to safeguard judicial integrity nationwide, the groups issued a stern warning to Justice Ikpambese:

“If the Chief Judge does not immediately discontinue his self-confessed plans to use the Local Government Tribunal to frustrate the Governor and the electorate of Benue State by manipulating tribunal outcomes through selective appointments, the CNPP and CNCSOs will be left with no option but to mobilize mass protests to occupy the National Judicial Council (NJC) headquarters until he is removed from office.”

They concluded: “The integrity of our judiciary must never be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. We demand immediate corrective actions to protect democratic institutions and uphold the sanctity of justice in Benue State.”

BATA Condemns EFCC’s “Politically Motivated Witch-Hunt” Against Bauchi State Officials

The Bauchi Accountability and Truth Awareness Front (BATA) has expressed its deep concern and condemnation regarding the recent actions taken by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against officials of the Bauchi State government, particularly the arrest of Alhaji Sirajo Mohammed Jaja, the Accountant General of Bauchi State.

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Lawal Sani Ningi, stated that the EFCC’s claims of a N70 billion fraud investigation, which has been linked to the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, “are nothing more than a politically motivated witch-hunt aimed at undermining the integrity of our state leadership and destabilizing the progress achieved under the current administration.”

According to the statement, the arrest of Alhaji Sirajo Mohammed Jaja, “alongside individuals purportedly connected to him, raises serious questions about the motives behind the EFCC’s actions.”

BATA insisted that “While the fight against corruption is a noble endeavor, it must be conducted with transparency, fairness, and a commitment to justice. Instead, we are witnessing a spectacle that appears to be driven by ulterior motives rather than genuine concern for accountability.

“The timing of these arrests, coinciding with critical periods in the politics of Bauchi State, suggests an orchestrated effort to tarnish the reputation of our state officials and, by extension, the office of the governor.
It is imperative to note that the linking of this investigation to Governor Bala Mohammed is particularly alarming.

“Such insinuations serve only to distract from the real issues at hand and divert public attention from the significant strides the governor has made in governance, infrastructural development, and social welfare in Bauchi State.”

They noted that the governor’s administration has consistently prioritized the welfare of the people, and it is disheartening to witness these achievements being overshadowed by unfounded allegations, saying that “BATA stands firmly against the politicization of anti-corruption efforts.”

BATA called on the EFCC to conduct its investigations impartially and without bias, adding “The integrity of our institutions is paramount, and any actions that compromise this integrity must be scrutinized and challenged. We urge the EFCC to provide concrete evidence to substantiate its claims rather than relying on mere speculation and conjecture.

“Furthermore, we call upon the citizens of Bauchi State to remain vigilant and discerning during this tumultuous period. It is crucial that we do not allow ourselves to be swayed by sensational headlines and politically charged narratives that seek to undermine our collective progress. The people of Bauchi deserve leaders who are committed to their welfare, not targets of politically motivated attacks.

“BATA reaffirms its commitment to accountability and truth in governance. We stand in solidarity with the officials of the Bauchi State government, including Governor Bala Mohammed, and we will continue to advocate for justice and transparency in all matters concerning our state.

“We urge the EFCC to reconsider its approach and focus on genuine efforts to combat corruption that do not compromise the principles of justice and fairness”, the statement concluded.

North-West Democratic Awareness Condemns Nasir El-Rufai’s Politics, Calls for a New Era of Leadership

In a bold and scathing critique, the North-West Democratic Awareness has denounced the political approach of Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, labeling it as a cautionary tale of power misused and democratic values eroded. The organization, through its Coordinator, Sanusi Lawal Tsiga, has called for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

El-Rufai’s tenure, marked by audacity and bravado, has been criticized for its lack of empathy and historical awareness. His public remarks, including controversial comments about past leaders such as President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and President Goodluck Jonathan, have been described as emblematic of a troubling trend in Nigerian politics—one that prioritizes personal ambition over national unity and respect for historical legacies.

The former governor’s criticisms of Nigeria’s founding fathers, including Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Nnamdi Azikiwe, have further alienated him from the electorate. The North-West Democratic Awareness argues that such actions jeopardize the collective memory that binds Nigerian society together.

The organization also highlighted El-Rufai’s authoritarian tendencies during his administration, which they claim sidelined dissenting voices and undermined democratic principles. This approach, they assert, has led to his political isolation and a loss of support from constituents.

In a rallying call to Nigerians, the North-West Democratic Awareness urged citizens to reject divisive and destructive politics. They emphasized the need for leaders who embody humility, respect for historical legacies, and a commitment to democratic ideals. The group envisions a future where governance prioritizes the well-being of citizens and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

As Nigeria moves forward, the North-West Democratic Awareness hopes to inspire a collective effort to advocate for leaders who navigate the complexities of power with wisdom and inclusivity. Their message is clear: the time has come for a new political paradigm that upholds integrity, respect, and a genuine commitment to the nation’s democratic ideals.

Peter Obi’s Homage to Emir of Bauchi Highlights Role of Traditional Leaders in National Unity – DWI

The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has extended a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the recent advances made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, as he embarked on a significant journey towards political collaboration and national unity.

According to a statement signed by Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, Director of Strategic Communication for the DWI, Obi’s visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the esteemed leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, marked a pivotal moment in Nigerian politics.

“We commend Peter Obi for his courageous decision to embrace the most powerful opposition party in the country, thereby positioning himself squarely within the mainstream political discourse.

“Peter Obi’s visit culminated in a respectful homage to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu. This gesture not only reflects Obi’s recognition of the vital role traditional institutions play in promoting peace and unity within our communities but also underscores his commitment to engaging with all facets of Nigerian society.”

The group observed that traditional leaders have “historically been instrumental in fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups, and their involvement in political discussions enhances the legitimacy of efforts aimed at fostering national cohesion.

“We applaud Governor Bala Mohammed’s commendation of Peter Obi’s dedication to nation-building and inclusive leadership. Such praise is significant, as it emphasizes the necessity for collaboration among leaders from different political backgrounds. It highlights a shared vision for Nigeria—one that transcends partisan divides and strives for the advancement of a prosperous and harmonious nation.

“Governor Mohammed’s acknowledgment of Obi’s efforts serves as a clarion call for other leaders to engage in constructive dialogue rather than adversarial politics, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives can coexist and contribute to the greater good”, the group said.

In this light, DWI urged Peter Obi to “consolidate the momentum generated by this visit. By aligning himself with the PDP and engaging in meaningful discussions with its leadership, he has the opportunity to redefine his political narrative and amplify his impact on the national stage.

“Unlike former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who appears to have lost focus and is attempting to fight from the periphery, Peter Obi has the chance to be at the forefront of a transformative political movement that prioritizes unity and progress.”

DWI added that “Governor Bala Mohammed’s advocacy for unity and politics without bitterness is a timely reminder of the values that should guide Nigeria’s political landscape.

“As our nation grapples with complex challenges, the emphasis on mutual respect, tolerance, and collective responsibility is essential for creating an environment conducive to growth and development.

“Leaders must heed this call, recognizing that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and the capacity of its people to unite for a common purpose. Only through such unity can Nigeria hope to realize its full potential and build a brighter future for all its citizens.

“The Democracy Watch Initiative celebrates Peter Obi’s strategic engagement with Governor Bala Mohammed and the Peoples Democratic Party. We look forward to seeing how this collaboration will unfold and contribute to the greater good of Nigeria.

“We encourage all political leaders to embrace dialogue, foster inclusivity, and work together towards the common goal of national advancement”, the statement concluded.

Governor Bala, Receives Obi in Historic Visit, Advocates Unity, Calls for Politics Without Bitterness

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has underscored the importance of unity, tolerance, and mutual respect as essential pillars for Nigeria’s progress. The governor made this statement during a visit from Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, alongside his entourage.

Governor Mohammed emphasized the urgent need for national cohesion, urging both leaders and citizens to prioritize the nation’s interests over personal and political ambitions.

“Patriotism remains the foundation for a brighter future,” he stated, reiterating his commitment as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum to fostering unity and combating division.

Commending Mr. Obi for his visit, Governor Mohammed praised his dedication to nation-building and inclusive leadership. The visit, according to Mr. Obi, was an opportunity to condole with Governor Mohammed over recent losses, engage in discussions on pressing national issues, and deepen consultations with key stakeholders.

The entourage, which included former Minister of Finance Mrs. Nenadi Usman and other dignitaries, joined Governor Mohammed in paying homage to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, at his palace.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to unity and collaboration, setting an example of politics without bitterness for the nation.
