CNPP Warns Nigeria Over Continued Shooting At #EndSARS Protesters

…Says Hoodlums’ Attacks on TVC, Others Price of Insensitivity

…Warns that Ongoing Crack down on Young Nigerians Will Ignite More Fire

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has again warned the Nigerian government that the continued deployment of security agencies and sponsoring of hoodlums to attack unarmed peaceful protesters in the country may lead to anarchy and disintegration of the country.

The CNPP in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu described as “price of insensitivity” the ongoing arson in Lagos State and other parts of the country.

According to the statement by the umbrella body of all registered political parties and political association, “the adamant federal government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently reaping the fruits of stubborn impunity and lake of attention to the basic needs of the Nigerian people in the past five years.

“In their characteristics, the warning by the CNPP that attempt to use force on the #EndSARS protesters would be catastrophic was ignored and the result is obvious.

“Again, the CNPP warn that the ongoing crackdown on young people across the country would aggravate the anger in the land just as the shooting of peaceful protesters in Lagos was ill-thought, counterproductive, inhumane, and above all wicked by those who planned and executed it.

“We are aware that both the federal government and the Lagos state government have denied involvement in the shooting.

“However, there is need for the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration to tell Nigerians who turned off the lights and removed CCTV cameras at the Lekki Toll Gate before the shooting.

“How come that men in military uniforms showed up and opened fire on the unarmed peaceful protesters holding the national flag while singing the national anthem.

“If indeed the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government that control security architecture of the country never ordered the shooting and never got intelligence ahead of the gruesome attack, then it’s time for President Buhari, the Chief of Army Staff  and other Security Chiefs in the country to resign.

“This has become imperative as it is becoming clear is a clear indication that nobody is safe in the country. The government must know that the “unknown soldier” theory cannot work in this digital age.

“Any government that consistently fails to listen to sincere advice from the people, the opposition, and civil society will definitely lead the country to nowhere.

“The people is the sovereign from whom the Nigerian government derives its existence and it is for them that the government exists. They must be listened to, not killed. The APC government which is a product of protests must know that peace is always impossible where injustice reign.

“If the federal government can arrest a hooded soldier they earlier described as fake, they should immediately arrest the Lekki Toll Gate shooters who killed #EndSARS protesters or immediately thrown in the towel. The continued arrest and killing of young people by government armed forces will ignite more fire in the country”, the CNPP warned.

Re: How Gov. Ugwuanyi Is Playing Ethnic Politics With ESUT VC Appointment

By Tochukwu Madukwe

Some Professors and academics from Enugu West zone, especially from Awgu, Aninri, Oji, Udi Ezeagu axis, who believe and have been lobbying to be appointed the substantive Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been sponsoring and planting some mischievous and false stories on social media platforms to malign the person, office and government of the Enugu State, under Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, create division and confusion in Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) over the appointment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles U. Ezeh, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University.

These 16 professors, who believe individually that they are already crowned as the VC of ESUT, have had series of meeting at La Nueva Hotel Independence Layout Enugu owned by a businessman from Awgu LGA. One of such meetings was held at the hotel on October 10, 2020 in which a decision was made to make ESUT ungovernable for the Acting VC until one of them is appointed VC of ESUT.

What beats the imagination of all well meaning people is that these characters angling and lobbying to be appointed VC of ESUT are the ones spewing and sponsoring falsehoods and attacks against Governor Ugwuanyi and the visitor of the University.

One continues to imagine the kind of leadership they will provide if by omission or commission any of them is appointed VC of ESUT. Since these 16 professors are known now, the state and the security agencies should monitor closely their nocturnal and clandestine activities and hold them responsible for any infraction in the smooth running of ESUT.

One of such stories titled “How Gov. Ugwuanyi is playing Ethnic Politics with ESUT VC appointment” was planted in the popular social media news app called operanewsapp.com, where they alleged that Ugwuanyi was playing and promoting ethnic politics with Eze’s appointment without stating how and when.

The mindset of the writers of this sponsored and malicious article is anchored on mischief, bigotry and divisiveness as they neither have history, convention nor practice behind them.

Appointments of Vice Chancellors and Acting Vice Chancellors in ESUT have always been based principally on equity, competence, circumstances on the ground and the Visitor’s discretion.

So, apart from appointing the substantive VCs in rotation from amongst the three Senatorial zones, it is on record and verifiable that these underlisted academics have since 1999 acted as Vice Chancellors of ESUT and heaven didn’t fall and nobody accused the university owners, Visitor or Governor of playing or promoting ethnic politics. They include:

  1. Prof. T.C Nwodo — Feb, 3rd- August 4th 1999, (6 Months)
  2. Prof. Mark Anikpo –‘ 4th August 1999 to February 2, 2000 (6 Months) and,
  3. Prof Chidi Ugwu 19th Nov. 2009 to June 21, 2010 (7 Months)

All these acting appointments were all made at a time of little or no emergency. Yet, in the discretion of the appointing authorities/Visitors ( Adewunmi Agbaje, Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime) the University needed these stop gap appointments to mitigate certain developments.

If these acting appointees who are/were from Enugu East and Enugu West could spend minimum of 6 months at a time of no known emergency in the University, what reason explains the holding of oppositional meetings and labeling Governor Ugwuanyi, who is also the university visitor, “Sectional”, just in a desperate move to remove a barely four months Acting appointee, Prof. Charles Eze; who is acclaimed to be changing the sad narrative in ESUT. Is it because Prof. Charles Eze is from Enugu North, in particular from Nsukka Local Government?

Or is it because he is incompetent? If no, had Enugu North group or Nsukka group held any meeting nor labeled HE Sullivan Chime as Sectional in order to push Prof Chidi Ugwu out of office even after spending seven months in office?

Why would any right thinking individual from Enugu West ( Awgu or Udi) engage in this perfidy barely four months of Acting appointment of Prof Charles Eze?

Does it not show bad judgment and bad character to malign Governor Ugwuanyi because of the vaulting ambition of some Professors, who ought to know better?

It is quite unfortunate that the academics that are always critical of the politicians have become more desperate for powers than the politicians.

For the records, on the assumption of office as the Acting Vice Chancellor by Prof Eze on 22nd May 2020, the situation in ESUT as confirmed by all critical stakeholders was described as that of System and Financial Collapse.

The Internally Generated Revenue was depleted with only N18M available and indebtedness of M539 and outstanding staff entitlement of N6Billion; this made it impossible to augment monthly subvention from State Government to pay salary; Lack of fairness and equity in the appointments; selective promotion; gross financial leakages, official academic fraudulence of all kinds, etc.

The list of the new management’s achievements in clearing the mess it inherited is numerous and endless, and continues to reverberate in the University Community and need not detain us here.

This was the same university the immediate past Vice Chancellor inherited in a state of sound financial and academic stead just five years ago. Where were the 16 conspiring Professors when all these things were happening?

What did they do to prevent or curb the mess? The 16 conspiring Professors did not accuse the Acting VC of non-performance or financial profligacy.

Their only grouse against him and Gov. Ugwuanyi is that both of them are from Nsukka. Why this Nsukka phobia? Have they forgotten that Prof. Eze is a substantive Deputy Vice Chancellor? He is overqualified to be Acting Vice Chancellor. So, why the blackmail of HE Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi over nothing?

What should be the greatest preoccupation of the 16 conspiring Professors should be how to support Prof. Ezeh led team in addressing the stinking rots it inherited in ESUT and not to embark on campaign of calumny against Governor Ugwuanyi to appoint substantive vice chancellor from Enugu West zone.

When and how the substantive Vice Chancellor will be appointed is at the discretion of the Visitor and Council. The Council and the Visitor know what is happening in ESUT and what must be done to bring ESUT back to stability.

Without mincing word or sounding hyperbolic, Gov. Ugwuanyi is the most fair-minded and equitable governor Enugu State has had since 1999. He has evenly and equitablely distributed developmental projects and appointments across the three senatorial zones unlike before now.

UMAR FAROUQ LEADS ADVOCACY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION MEASURES

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development is spearheading the advocacy for putting in place disaster risk reduction measures in public and private spaces.

The Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq made the call today while marking the 2020 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction which is celebrated all over the world on October 13.

According to Umar Farouq, the advocacy is to raise awareness among public and private organizations as well as the general public on how to prepare for and mitigate the risks of fire incidents in high rise buildings, high occupancy public and private buildings as well as workplaces and ensure that they have fire and emergency evacuation plans in place while practicing fire exit drills periodically.

“To demonstrate this, the Ministry, in collaboration with other first responders in disaster management, is organizing the first ever fire evacuation drill in the Federal Secretariat Building.

The drill will take place on Friday October 23, 2020. This is because, in 2020 alone, Nigeria has witnessed over 20 fire incidents in both public and private buildings. Fire hazard is thus, one of the major disaster risks in Nigeria.

“The purpose of the fire exit drill slated for next week, is to ensure the efficient and safe use of the exit facilities available at the Federal Secretariat Buildings in case of an emergency.

Such drills ensure orderly exit under control and prevent the panic that has been responsible for loss of lives in major fire disasters.

“While we are focusing on fire hazards today, the Ministry will continue to evolve strategies which address not just single hazards like fire and floods but also those that respond to systemic risks generated by industrial accidents like pipeline explosions and gas leakages”.

The Minister called on individuals to pass on to their various homes and offices, lessons that will be learnt from next week’s fire exit drill, to make Nigeria disaster risk free.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Disaster risk governance’ .

The Ministry, since its establishment on August 21, 2019, has been initiating policies and programs that will build resilience towards disaster risk reduction in Nigeria.

Fire drills can also expedite the institutionalization of disaster risk governance.

SARSMustEnd Protests: It’s Time For Mr President to Address Nigerians – CNPP Tells Buhari

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to address the nation and calm nerves amidst the ongoing #SARSMustEnd protest spreading across the country.

The CNPP in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu said “there is a time silence is not golden and such a time is now.”

The umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria maintained that “for the President to continue to keep quiet while peacefully protesting young Nigerians are being brutalised and killed by security operatives raises doubt on how sensitive the current administration is to the plights of suffering Nigerians.

“In case Mr President and his handlers has forgotten, in the dark days of military dictatorship both the people and the Nigerian media were gagged using the barrels of the gun but it never worked.

“If it didn’t work under the military dictatorships in the past, how do President Buhari and his handlers think rolling out tanks and oppressive weapons will be an answer to genuine demand for reforming the Nigeria Police Force?

“In case Mr President is not aware, our findings since the current unrest in the country show that the people are determined and continued deployment of security forces against the citizens will worsen the situation as bottled anger in the last five years of maladministration will finally be unleashed by the citizens.

“We then call on Mr President to immediately address the nation and order security agencies to leave the protesters alone.

“The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should do the needful urgently and stop an obviously impending national outrage against the government it formed in 2015”, the CNPP counselled.

COVID-19: Saving Lives, Economies and Livelihoods Campaign Launches in Africa

H.E. Amira Elfadil Mohammed, Commissioner for Social Affairs, African Union Commission; H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy; and Dr John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) launched the “Africa Against COVID-19: Saving Lives, Economies and Livelihoods” campaign during the Africa CDC weekly press briefing on COVID-19 on 20th August.

The Saving Lives, Economies and Livelihoods campaign will facilitate the development of a harmonized strategy to protect borders, travellers, economies, livelihoods, and schools in Africa from the risk of increased COVID-19 transmission as countries begin to re-open their borders.

The campaign is being implemented by the Africa Task Force for Novel Coronavirus of the African Union, which includes representatives of the Africa CDC, World Health Organization Africa Regional Office, African Union NEPAD, UNICEF, African Union Member States, public health institutions, and several partners. The objectives are to:

  1. minimize the spread of infection within and across borders by creating a unified public health corridor for safe travel within the continent;
  2. curtail the impact of COVID-19 on economies and livelihoods through the mutual recognition and acceptance of health information and data across Member States;
  3. ensure that schools are reopened safely through the establishment and engagement of a multi-sectoral committee to develop a school opening safety plan.

“In the last two weeks, Africa passed one million cases of COVID-19. Noting that we do not have a vaccine yet, and recognizing the socio-economic effects of the pandemic on Member States, we must continue to be proactive so that we do not lose the precious gains made with the preventive measures. I am therefore proud to announce the official launch of the African Union Africa Against COVID-19: Saving Lives, Economies, and Livelihoods as an effort to use innovative tools, methods and partnerships to prevent further transmission, deaths and socio-economic harm on the continent as economies, borders and schools re-open,” said H.E. Amira Mohammed.

“Transport is a catalyst for many of the big initiatives on the continent such as the Single African Air Transport Market and the Continental Free Trade Area, but transport has been halted around the world, affecting most sectors. It is important to work together as a continent to turn this crisis into an opportunity to improve our systems so we can reopen our economies quickly and safely,” said H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid.

The campaign is supported by a consortium of private sector organizations, including Econet Group and other pan-African institutions that are part of the PanaBios platform. These organizations generously donation of their innovative technology platforms for the campaign.

“That many African organizations such as the African Organisation for Standardisation, Africa Economic Zones Organization, African Tourism Board, Koldchain BioCordon, and several others are supporting the PanaBIOS platform is testament to a newfound spirit of public-private partnerships and to the belief in local innovation that will transform the continent completely,” Dr Edem Adzogenu, Chairperson of AfroChampions said.

“We are excited to be working with African Union Member States, the Africa CDC and our implementation partners by offering the Health Status Report, a mobile-based, global health information platform – powered by secure blockchain technology – that captures a person’s COVID-19 testing data and results”, said Mr Strive Masiyiwa, Executive Chairman of Econet, and African Union Special Envoy for the Continental Fight Against COVID-19.

“This data can be shared by individuals confidentially and at their discretion with relevant government, transport and business entities, in a manner that respects personal data privacy,” added Mr Masiyiwa.

“When we talk about easing the lockdown of economies and border crossings, it’s all about people. It’s about how easily we can facilitate the movement of people while at the same time ensuring critical public health measures are in place,” said Dr John Nkengasong.

The campaign will leverage the African Union’s Partnership to Accelerate COVID-19 Testing (PACT) initiative to scale up testing, contact tracing and treatment in Africa while incorporating innovative indigenous technologies from the private sector to enhance surveillance, digitisation of COVID-19 test results, and data management.

Russia Rounds off COVID-19 Vaccine Trial

Russia’s health authorities have revealed that the country has successfully concluded the clinical trial of a vaccine against COVID-19 in a group of volunteers, becoming the first country to successfully complete this fase.

“At this stage, the safety of the vaccine was demonstrated. It corresponds to the safety of vaccines that are currently on the market, ” First Moscow State Medical University Sechenov’s Institute of medical parasitology and tropical and vector-borne diseases director Alexander Lukashev said.

The clinical trials started on June 18 in the University of Séchenov with the objective of evaluating the effects against the coronavirus, created by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.

Telesurtv reports that the vaccine was created without an element of the coronavirus and is presented in a lyophilized form ready to be administered intravenously.

38 people participated in the clinical trials with some presenting some side effects, like a slight fever and headaches that vanished throughout the day.

The first group of volunteers who recieved the vaccine will be discharged on July 15, and the second group on July 20.

The volunteers were under the constant supervision of doctors who evaluated them and currently do not have any health problems. Their health will continue to be monitored for 6 months, according to the scientists.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Health, at least 17 out of 47 prototype vaccines against the novel coronavirus being developed in the country are making serious progress, while three are already holding clinical trials with volunteers.
