And the sustenance of this resolve lends credence to the mantra of his government NDI’ENUGU FUTURE IS HERE.

Taking Governance Beyond Partisanship To Performance And Service Delivery I

By Prof Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr

Since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, as Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has made remarkable strides across Infrastructure, Healthcare, Education, Security and Economic Reform. With a technocratic background and a vision for sustainable transformation, his tenure is already being described as “unprecedented” by Traditional Rulers, Political Operators, Civil Society Advocates, Stakeholders and Critics alike.

A Vision Rooted in Reform and Delivery.

Governance under Dr. Otti is characterised by professionalism, data‑driven decision‐making and transparency. Former Banker turned Governor, he has brought Private‐sector discipline to the public square.
He states his covenant clearly… “to serve all Abians, not a few people.”

From the outset, he declared emergencies in key sectors—Roads, Health, Sanitation and Security – signalling a break from business as usual.

Infrastructure And Connectivity: Roads, Power and Urban Renewal

One of the hallmarks of the Otti administration is the scale and quality of infrastructure. Over 140 roads have been constructed or rehabilitated across Abia State, including Rural ring roads that connect previously isolated communities.

The expansion of the Ossah Road in Umuahia into a six‑lane boulevard (now Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard) and major works in Aba attest to the ambition of this exceptional Leader.

Power reforms: Understanding that commerce depends on reliable electricity, Dr. Otti’s administration has targeted improved power supply and addressed infrastructure bottlenecks.

These efforts show a shift from fragmented works to strategic infrastructure with economic and social impact. “Our benchmark now is not just the Kilometres built but the economic and social impact they deliver,” the Governor once observed.

Healthcare And Human Capital Development: Investing in People.

Dr. Otti’s government has placed clear emphasis on Health and Education as foundations for long‑term growth.

Health: The State has launched “Project Ekwueme” to upgrade primary Health Care Centres across the 184 wards of the State, and refurbish tertiary facilities including the State Teaching Hospital.

Education and Recruitment.

Thousands of Teaching Staff have been brought on board, and very profound school infrastructure improvements are ongoing.

Welfare: Pension and very long neglected Salary arrears have been systematically cleared, restoring dignity to workers and retirees.

By investing in such fundamentals, the administration is laying the basis for a more resilient and inclusive society.

Economy And The Requisite Enabling Environment Necessary For Business To Thrive.

The Otti administration recognises that Abia’s strength lies in entrepreneurship, industry (especially around Aba), and a favourable business climate. And like a man with an unrivaled clarity of purpose, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti has in less than 2 years and 6 months lifted Aba from the morass to reclaim its pride as the centre of commerce and industry in the South East.

Understanding that Governments must at all times work for the good of the greater number, Dr Otti has followed through with the Reform of revenue collection and taxation to ease burdens on traders while enhancing State income.

Industrial and Innovation Park Initiatives (e.g the Abia Industrial And Innovation Park) as part of economic diversification.

International Partnerships And Donors Engagement: The state has unlocked multi‑lateral support and made Abia more “investment‑ready”.

These efforts speak to a shift from passive dependency to proactive economic fervency.

Governance, Security And Institutional Reform.

A functioning State requires more than projects, it requires strong institutions and a safe environment. To this end the ‘Operation Crush’ Security outfit and multi‑agency collaboration has improved the security profile of Abia State.

Transparency and due process have become key features of the Alex Otti administration, as payments are cleared in 72 hours in some Agencies, and merit‑based recruitment has become the benchmark in the Civil Service. Such institutional reforms matter because they enable sustainability, not just short‑term wins.

Recognition And Early External Validation.

Stakeholders see what is happening in Abia. Traditional Rulers are unanimous in the description of Dr. Otti’s mid‑term performance as “profound and unprecedented”.

Donor Agencies have returned and expanded operations in the State on account of the dogged commitment of Dr Otti’s administration to make Abia State the envy of the States.

I shall in the sequel to this effort furnish my readers with incontrovertible data and details regarding the massive transformation of Abia State under the able superintendence of Dr. Alex Otti.

Appraising the Giant Legislative Strides of Rt. Hon. Makki

By Ali Mohd

Lawmakers are rated based on certain basic criteria. These include, but are not limited, to; the number of Bills sponsored, the effectiveness and efficiency in oversight functions, and the number of development projects attracted to the constituency; development being the function of the projects attracted.

Other indices are the number of projects executed, attitudes towards promoting peace and harmony, which is directly a reflection of the level of peace and unity brought to bear on his constituency based on his opinion and position on issues, and the community services rendered.

For RT. HON. MAKKI ABUBAKAR YALLEMAN, a Member of the 10th House of Representatives, and Member representing Mallam Madori/Kaugama Federal Constituency, and current Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs, performing these duties and also holding sway as the Committee Chairman has brought him a lot of opportunities for service to humanity.

His position as the Committee Chairman enabled him to oversee the affairs of the entire Police department in the country.

It was American Max Depree who was quoted as stating these timeless words: ‘ The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality’.

In Nigeria, finding a permanent solution to the challenges of insecurity and education, thereby securing the environment for life and property and finding a solution to the educational needs of our people is paramount sine quo non to prosperity and a viable national economy.

This has also proven to be the biggest constraint to the full manifestation of the ingenuity of the people of his constituency. He aggressively tackled the challenge using sometimes his resources and also the power of effective legislation.

For instance, Rt. Hon. Makki constructed level-3 Primary Health Centres for women and children in Yalleman Tijjani, Dakaiyawa Ward of Kangama Local Government Area.

He also distributed motorcycles in Mallam Madori/Kaugama Federal Constituency.

As part of his legislative duties, Rt. Hon. Abubakar sponsored three Bills, which include; the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Kaugama (Est.) Bill, 2024, the Federal Vocational and Entrepreneurial Training Centre, Mallam Madori, Jigawa State (Est.) Bill, 2024, and the Nigeria Police Force College, Training School and Institution (Est.) Bill, 2024.

Rt. Hon. Makki in a bid to ensure an all-inclusive constituency as well as its general growth stood against narrow myopic interest by asserting the nobility of group aspirations above individual ambition.

His firm belief that a people must once in their lifetime, grind to a halt for self-assessment and evaluation, led him to convoke a series of meetings and one-on-one with his constituents. Sometimes compelling him to extricate himself from the easy life of comfort at Abuja.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, he championed several reforms and innovative interventions leading to several amendments to the Police Act, to revolutionize and strengthen the delivery capabilities of the Force.

His adherence to principles and strategic alliances led to the adoption of best practices in the Force and a more sustainable volte-face.

There is no doubt that Rt. Hon. Nikki Abubakar has made giant legislative strides as the Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs, and have also justified the trust reposed on him both by his constituents and colleagues.

Banditry: Dauda Lawal and The Doctrine of Res Ipsa Loquitur

By Ali Mohammed

The latest exposes surrounding Governor Dauda Lawal’s purported complicity in financing banditry in Zamfara State have sparked widespread astonishment and demands for clarity. Presently, Zamfara State is grappling with an unprecedented surge in banditry and insurgency, with communities being increasingly besieged, and Governor Lawal’s actions and decisions have come under intense scrutiny.

The governor’s alleged entanglement in funding banditry, ostensibly to perpetuate his interests in illicit mining operations, raises fundamental questions about governance, ethical standards, and accountability. Governor Lawal, who initially vowed to adopt a hardline stance against bandits, appears to have reneged on his promise by engaging in a contentious scheme involving substantial financial transactions with bandit leaders.

Recent revelations indicate that Governor Lawal has allegedly allocated over N1.3 billion to bandits and media propagandists, a move that starkly contradicts his earlier avowed commitment to combating terrorism and criminality.

The list of recipients and the substantial amounts they received has shamefully become public knowledge, further exacerbating concerns about Governor Lawal’s credibility and commitment to the welfare of Zamfara State citizens.

The leaked documents, bearing the requisite signatures for authentication, have exposed startling financial transactions to various individuals and entities, including:

Notoriously infamous bandit kingpins, who received substantial sums:

  • Kachalla Dogo Gide (N200 million), Bello Turji (N200 million), Ado Alero (N200 million), Kachalla Halilu Sububu (N150 million), Gwaska Dan Karami (N150 million)

Additionally, significant payments were made to media promoters, ostensibly for propaganda purposes:

  • Sahara Reporters (N100 million), Jackson Ude (N158 million), Bashir Hadejia (N100 million), Shuaibu Mungadi (N50 million), Tijjani Lamaran (N50 million), Danbilki Kwamanda (N20 million)

These startling revelations have sparked profound apprehensions regarding the misappropriation of public funds and potential collusion in perpetuating insecurity, thereby fueling widespread despondency among citizens.

The recipients of these payments are notorious individuals who have openly avowed to destabilize Nigeria, reveling in the chaos and destruction they sow. Their actions have led to the senseless slaughter of countless innocent Nigerians, leaving trails of devastation and shattered dreams.

The very fact that public funds have been allocated to these malevolent actors has crippled the nation’s collective aspirations, inflicting irreparable damage on the psyche of the citizenry.

These individuals embody the quintessence of economic sabotage, perpetuating an era of economic woe characterized by plunder, exploitation, and unbridled violence. The alleged payments to infamous bandit kingpins, notably Kachalla Dogo Gide and Bello Turji, as well as various media personalities, are deeply disturbing and raise fundamental questions about governance and accountability.

Reports suggest that these transactions are aimed to secure access to Zamfara State’s lucrative gold deposits, which have become a catalyst for violence and exploitation. Most troubling is the temporal correlation between these payments and the surge in attacks on communities rich in gold deposits, implying a causal link between financial transactions and escalated violence.

The principle of res ipsa loquitur, which translates to “the thing speaks for itself,” can be instrumental in assessing the situation at hand. This legal doctrine implies that the evidence of wrongdoing is so apparent that it speaks for itself, without needing extensive additional proof. In the case of Governor Lawal, several factors invoke this doctrine:

Nature of the Payments: The direct allocation of funds to bandit leaders, purportedly for their cooperation and continued operations, presents a clear and alarming picture. Such payments suggest an implicit acknowledgment of their influence and power, and an unsettling endorsement of their activities. The funds transferred to these terrorists were done solely at the discretion of Governor Lawal. These mode of transactions suggest a deliberate attempt to conceal the true intentions behind these payments.

Increase in Attacks: The correlation between the payments made to bandits and the uptick in violent attacks on communities, particularly those with gold deposits, reinforces the suspicion that these funds may have incentivized further violence. The timing of these attacks in the aftermath of the financial transactions amplifies the notion that the payments had a direct impact on the escalation of violence.

Lack of Transparency and Oversight: The funds were reportedly transferred without the involvement of the Zamfara State House of Assembly or any formal approval processes, highlighting a glaring lack of oversight and accountability.

There is nowhere in the approval that states that this criminal enterprise was undertaken with neighbouring states or the federal government. The absence of procedural transparency further compounds the suspicion of illicit motives behind these transactions.

Media Transactions: The allocation of significant amounts to media figures and organizations, such as Sahara Reporters and Jackson Ude, raises questions about the intent behind these payments. The possible use of media platforms to propagate bandit-friendly narratives or deflect attention from the governor’s actions could be viewed as a strategic move to manipulate public perception and obscure the truth.

The lingering inquiry that demands attention is: Does Governor Dauda Lawal harbor complicity in the scourge of banditry? A meticulous examination of the available evidence appears to indicate a disturbing nexus between Lawal and notorious bandit leaders, coupled with the clandestine role of his media aides in disseminating terrorist propaganda, specifically targeting opposition party leaders and artfully shifting blame onto preceding administrations.

The recent document exposing allocations from the state security Trust Fund account to bandit leaders serves as a damning addition to the mounting body of evidence.

Cumulatively, these incriminating circumstances constitute prima facie evidence implicating Governor Lawal in the sponsorship of banditry, warranting rigorous scrutiny and accountability. Governor Dauda Lawal’s deafening silence in the face of these grave allegations is profoundly troubling, fostering an atmosphere of suspicion and skepticism.

The glaring absence of a clear, convincing explanation or defense from the governor’s office only serves to intensify the perception of culpability, eroding public trust and confidence in his administration. In a democratic polity, such silence can be construed as an implicit acknowledgment of guilt or, at the very least, an unwillingness to confront the grave concerns and serious allegations raised by these revelations.

Considering the far-reaching consequences of these actions on the security and stability of Zamfara State and, by extension, Nigeria, a comprehensive and impartial investigation into Governor Lawal’s dealings is imperative.

The available evidence unequivocally indicates a necessity for intensified scrutiny and accountability, as the governor’s alleged actions, if substantiated, constitute a egregious breach of public trust and a grave dereliction of duty in addressing the pervasive banditry crisis.

The allegations leveled against Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly the assertion that he disbursed substantial sums to notorious bandit leaders and media personalities, demand rigorous and unflinching investigation. Governor Lawal’s actions, as alleged, provide a disturbing framework for understanding the gravity of the situation, predicated on verifiable facts and the alarming correlation between the payments and the ensuing escalation of violence.

The severity of these allegations necessitates an exhaustive probe, unhindered by political considerations or institutional obstacles, to unearth the truth and ensure accountability. Self-evidently, the facts speak for themselves, and no prophetic insight is required to discern Governor Lawal’s complicity in perpetuating insecurity.

The overwhelming evidence implicating Governor Dauda Lawal in the financing of banditry in Zamfara State is nothing short of staggering. His conspicuous silence and lack of transparency only serve to exacerbate suspicions, further solidifying the perception of complicity.

As the doctrine of res ipsa loquitor aptly suggests, the circumstances surrounding Governor Lawal’s actions speak for themselves, undeniably pointing to culpability, and right now, the time for accountability and consequences has arrived.

To move forward, it would be a prudent step if anti-graft agencies swiftly investigated and verified the transactions outlined in the document, froze all accounts linked to the listed beneficiaries, and prosecuted the recipients for terrorism financing.

As this situation continues to unfold, it is important that Mr President issues an Executive Order prioritizing transparency and accountability.

This order should facilitate the swift identification and prosecution of all individuals connected to insecurity in Zamfara State and the North-West, eradicating terrorism from the region. Moreover, those responsible for perpetuating violence and undermining state integrity must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s thunderous silence is increasingly intolerable, and the people of Zamfara State, indeed all Nigerians, deserve straightforward and honest explanations.

It Is crucial that he provides a credible and convincing account, far surpassing the simplistic and unsubstantiated childish narratives that have thus far been offered by his aides.

In light of the doctrine of res ipsa loquitor, which dictates that the circumstances themselves establish culpability, it is reasonable to conclude that Governor Lawal, by virtue of his position as the chief executive of Zamfara State, possesses critical information regarding the masterminds behind the banditry plaguing the North-West.

In essence, Governor Lawal’s proximity to the crisis and his constitutional responsibility to ensure public safety obligate him to disclose the truth, furnishing the public with a comprehensive understanding of the forces driving this insecurity. Nigerians are waiting to hear from him.

Government Must Act: CCNN, 20 Affiliates Withdraw from Nationwide Protest, Present Demands

The Concerned Citizens of Northern Nigeria (CCNN) has announced its withdrawal from the planned nationwide protest, citing concerns over potential risks and consequences.

This was made known by the Jigawa State Coordinator of the group, Muhammad Bello Aliyu at a press conference on Saturday.

The group, which initially participated in mobilizing people for the protest, has now prioritized peace and stability in the region.

In the press conference, the CCNN Jigawa State Chapter, representing 27 local government areas and 20 affiliate associations, explained that the decision was made after careful consideration and assessment of the potential risks.Government Must Act: CCNN Withdraws from Protest, Presents Demands

The group cited the devastating effects of protests in other countries and Nigeria’s own experience with the #EndSARS protest, which was hijacked by elements with ulterior motives.

“We cannot afford to repeat such a scenario in Northern Nigeria. We cannot afford to gamble with the security and well-being of our people,” said the CCNN.

Despite withdrawing from the protest, the group emphasized the need for the government to address the pressing issues of insecurity, hunger, and starvation. “Nigerians are suffering, and it is imperative that the government rises up to the occasion to find solutions to these issues,” said the CCNN.

The group presented specific demands to the government, including tackling insecurity, ending hardship, reversing the petrol price hike, and reducing electricity tariffs and tertiary institution fees.

The CCNN also criticized the promoters and sponsors of the protest, many of whom are diaspora Nigerians living and working abroad. “We will not provide a platform for conflict merchants to exploit the situation and worsen the suffering of our people,” said the group.

The CCNN then urged all concerned citizens to prioritize peace and stability in the region, working together to build a brighter future devoid of violence.

Addressing Insecurity in Northern Nigeria: The Defence Ministry, CNG Approach

By Nura Ibrahim Birnin Magaji

The recent approach by the Defence Ministry and the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) to address insecurity in northern Nigeria is a step in the right direction.

This approach will lead to improved, sincere and determined collaboration among the northern states Governors, the federal government, and other critical stakeholders in the region to tackle the root causes of insecurity.

It is evident that the insecurity in northern Nigeria has led to the loss of lives and property as the activities of armed bandits and other criminal elements have made lives unbearable for people within the region.

Banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism have become common occurrences, and the region is in dire need of effective solutions.

There now seems to be a ray of hope with the collaboration between the Defence Ministry and the CNG which has already begun to yield positive results, aiming to permanently resolve the rising insecurity in Zamfara state and ultimately the entire northern region.

The collaboration between the government and CNG to safeguard the lives and properties of citizens, especially in the northern part of the country, is focused on bringing lasting peace to the region through rapid military response, dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect.

Though it could be a step in the right direction towards ending insecurity in Nigeria, it is important however, to note that this problem cannot be solved by this collaboration alone.

First, the northern states Governors must necessarily collaborate with the Federal Government and other critical stakeholders in the region to address the root causes of insecurity and come up with effective solutions that will benefit everyone.

It is theseccollaborative efforts between the government, security agencies, civil society organizations, and communities affected by insecurity that will ensure that everyone is involved in finding lasting solutions to this problem.

Addressing the root causes of insecurity is also crucial. Poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education are some of the factors that contribute to insecurity in Nigeria.

It is therefore important that these issues are addressed holistically to prevent future occurrences.

Furthermore, dialogue and mutual respect among all parties involved are essential for sustainable peace. It is important that everyone’s views and concerns are heard and taken into consideration during discussions aimed at resolving conflicts.

With this realization, a delegation from the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) was mobilized to the Zamfara State capital, Gusau, to assess the situation regarding the recent attacks on the Federal University, Gusau that resulted in the abduction of yet to be specified number of female students by heartless bandits.
While in Gusau, the CNG delegation interacted with various stakeholders, including officials from the state government, the affected families, community leaders, security agencies, and representatives from the academic community.

During one of those interactions, the Gusau University authorities expressed gratitude to the Military for its commendable efforts and gallantry in response to the threats to the university community.

They emphasized the importance of strengthening security measures within the university premises to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.

However, they also stressed the need to strengthen security measures within the university premises to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.
They acknowledged the presence of a military formation at Kwatarkwashi, approximately five kilometers from the campus, which is understaffed with very few troops deployed. Whenever they receive another distress call at Magami, Wanzamai, or Kuceri, also within their area of coverage, the University environment becomes porous and vulnerable, leaving it open to potential danger.

As a solution, they proposed establishing a security outpost to replace the current mobile formation and be permanently dedicated to securing the campus and Sabon Gida community where most students reside.

The CNG team observed that the lack of fortification fencing and security ditches around the university has caused concerns among many individuals, highlighting the need for urgent measures.

Similarly, the State Government also recognized the troops’ efforts in combating the attackers, despite the insufficient number of personnel available. The government suggested deploying additional contingents to reinforce the current ones and recommended establishing a commission to coordinate efforts, allocate resources, and implement development programs in Zamfara State and the entire North-West region, similar to the Niger Delta and North East Development Commissions.

While presenting their findings and recommendations regarding the security situation in Zamfara and the North-West to the Minister of State Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawale, the CNG emphasized the need for the government and security forces to combat insurgency in Zamfara with determination and adherence to legal obligations.

The group also stressed that achieving full cessation of hostilities, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration in the entire region is imperative for declaring victory.

The Minister was moved by the report and promptly instructed for a military outpost to be established near the university campus as request by the University authorities and supported by the CNG report, with the sole responsibility of securing the campus.

After receiving the report and recommendations from the CNG, Matawalle pledged to work with the federal Ministry of Education to begin and complete the fencing fortification around the university premises.

He also stated that the Defence Ministry will provide ditches around the campus. Matawalle recognized Nigeria’s courageous troops and praised the new sense of collaboration between frontline states and the strong determination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the battle against banditry and kidnapping in Zamfara and other North-West states.

Additionally, he applauded the CNG for its proactive approach and willingness to collaborate with the Federal Government in addressing security concerns in the North-West region, specifically in Zamfara State.

It is no secret that the security situation in Zamfara state has negatively impacted agriculture, transportation, and other economic activities in the state, leading to a huge loss of revenue. Therefore, this initiative will not only bring about relief to the residents of Zamfara state but also serve as an economic boost.

It is imperative that the Zamfara state government, along with all stakeholders, key into this initiative as it offers a glimmer of hope for a region that has been constantly bleeding. The coalition’s efforts, in collaboration with the defense minister, have shown that a solution to the insecurity problem plaguing the north exists.

The initiative also has the potential to create a conducive environment for economic growth and development within the region. All stakeholders must give their support for the success of this initiative, and the Zamfara state government must lead the charge.

The role of the entire northern states Governors in this initiative cannot be overemphasized. They need to work closely with the federal government and other stakeholders to identify the root causes of insecurity in their respective states and come up with effective solutions to be implemented and coordinated collectively address them.

One of the critical stakeholders in this initiative is the local communities. They are the ones directly affected by insecurity, and their input is essential in developing effective solutions. The traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations in the region also have a vital role to play in the initiative.

The federal government, on its part, needs to provide the necessary support to ensure that the initiative is successful. This support includes funding, logistics, and security personnel.

It is unfortunate that while the Ministery of Defence and the CNG were working diligently towards a common goal, the state Governor of Zamfara State Dauda Lawal was away in New York. This absence may have hindered the progress and coordination of the efforts being made.

The actions of the Governor the day of the attack on the Gusau University campus are inexcusable. Abandoning the state and staying incommunicado for several days is not only irresponsible but also sends the wrong message to the people of the state.

It is insensitive for him not to stand with his people during times of crisis and work towards finding solutions to the challenges facing his state.
Now that the Governor has returned, people are understandably waiting to see what he will do next. It is essential that he comes off the high horse and reach out to the Federal Government to for effective coordination of efforts to address the security concerns in the state and work towards ensuring that such attacks do not happen again.

He should keep in mind that leadership comes with great responsibility, and it is imperative that he understands the gravity of his actions and how they impact the people he leads. In times of crisis, leaders must stand strong and provide reassurance to their people that they are working towards a resolution.

Zamfra: When a Governor Abdicates His Responsibilities

By Suleiman Abba

Crass political opportunism refers to the practice of politicians exploiting situations solely for personal gain or benefit, without genuine concern for the well-being of the people they are supposed to represent. It can manifest in various ways, such as making empty promises during election campaigns or capitalizing on crises to gain political advantage.

This behaviour undermines the democratic principles of transparency, honesty, and genuine public service. Instead of focusing on addressing the needs of the people, crass political opportunists prioritize advancing personal ambitions or agendas, eroding public trust in politicians and creating cynicism among voters.

An accurate personification of crass political opportunism is when the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal chose to abdicate his primary responsibilities and absconded on the very day the campus of the Federal University Gusau was brutally attacked and dozens of female students abducted.

This action and other unexplained aspects of the Governor’s arrogance in going ahead with his US trip despite and in spite of the circumstances of fear in which innocent students entrusted in his care found themselves.
The first aspect is that there is incontrovertible evidence that the the Governor was in Abuja all the time the attack was taking place but left for New York four hours later. Sufficient proof exists that the attackers left the campus around 4am and Lawal flew out at 8am exactly four afterwards.

Another suspicious development is that for the last six days since the incident and Lawal’s abdication, the federal government and federal security agencies have been making efforts to link up with the Zamfara government but they avoided their moves.
For instance the Defence Minister and other Defence Chiefs have variously called the Deputy Governor in the absence of his principal, but he declined all the calls.

Again, in the rare occasions when officials were able to link up with the Governor, from the US, he arrogantly told them to wait for his return.

These circumstances have been breeding serious suspicions and perhaps justifiable too, that there is some form of a hidden agenda and collaboration with the bandits which informs the Zamfara government’s desperation to frustrate intervention efforts no matter how sincere, genuine and legitimate.

Natuarally, and by default, this brazen abdication by Governor Lawal created a sense of abandonment and amplified the vulnerabilities already faced by the people of the state.

His apparent failure to remain close to the people he leads, especially during such times of dire distress, by staying away for several days afterwards, made the situation incredibly disappointing and disheartening.

In such times, the natural and legitimate expectation is for the Governor to cancel whatever trip it was, return to base immediately to provide support and guidance as his absence can leave the distressed people of the state vulnerable and uncertain about the future.

It is expected that during those challenging times, Governor Lawal should have remained close to the people who, just a few months ago, trusted him to lead them through and out of their limitations around security and the economy.

He was expected to have demonstrated a commitment and dedication to the well-being of the people considering that the role of a leader is not only to make decisions and govern, but also to empathize with the struggles and concerns of his people.

In times of distress, it is crucial for a leader to be present, both physically and emotionally, to offer reassurance and comfort.

Effective leadership requires a deep understanding of the needs and realities of the people being led. It means recognizing the importance of being actively engaged, even when faced with difficulties.
It is his duty to prioritize the needs of the people who voted him to power and provide the necessary support, even if it means personal sacrifice.

Naturally, when he chose to stay away during auch times of distress, it not only erodeed the people’s trust and faith in his leadership, but it also raised questions about his priorities and motives because by neglecting this responsibility, Lawal risks exacerbating the people’s vulnerabilities and undermining the trust and confidence placed in them.

Responsible leadership, not the type Lawal provides in Zamfara State, is all about being present and supportive, especially in the face of adversity.

If Governor Lawal were a responsible and effective leader, he would have understood the significance of staying connected to the people he leads, particularly during times of crisis by being physically present and leading from the front to inspire and motivate them, boost morale and foster a sense of unity.

By every rule of decency a leader who remains present during moments of crisis, demonstrates the commitment to the well-being and success of his people. This demonstration of solidarity goes a long way in building trust and loyalty among those being leads. By standing alongside their people, which Lawal evidently failed to do, leaders show that they are not just making decisions from a distance but are actively involved in the challenges the people face.

Furthermore, leaders who lead from the front set an example for their followers. They exemplify the values and qualities they expect from their followers, showing that they are not just giving orders but are willing to take risks and face the difficulties themselves.

By being on the ground, Lawal could have had the opportunity to assess the situation first-hand, make informed decisions, and provide immediate feedback. This hands-on approach would have ensured that, as a leader, he has a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the people and can respond effectively.
There is no denying that it is highly irresponsible for Governor Lawal to distance himself from his people for this long especially in the aftermath of a tragic event such as the forceful abduction of students of a higher institution who are the natural and legitimate claimants to the task of shaping the society.

Lawal’s primary responsibility is to ensure the welfare and safety of their constituents. When they choose to remain disconnected in times of crisis like this one, it can have severe repercussions on both the affected individuals and the overall moral fabric of society.
In times of tragedy, people look to their leaders for guidance, support, and reassurance. They need someone to step up and take charge, providing a sense of unity and direction. His physical presence, empathetic gestures, and words of consolation could have gone a long way in fostering hope, healing, and rebuilding efforts.

By staying away from the people he is meant to serve, Lawal not only abandoned his duties but also confirmed the long-held fears that he is detached and unconcerned, an action that is already breeding feelings of resentment, mistrust, and disillusionment among the Zamfara citizens, weakening the bond between his government and the society he represents.

Moreover, his absence during those times of crisis can have practical implications. He has may missed out on valuable firsthand information about the situation on the ground, making it difficult for him to make informed decisions and take necessary actions. This lack of involvement had slowed down emergency response efforts, exacerbated the suffering of those affected, and hindered the process of recovery of the abducted students.

A leader’s commitment to the people should be unwavering, especially during difficult times. Responsible leaders strive to be present, visible, and engaged, working side by side with their citizens to address the challenges at hand. This proactive approach not only helps in solving immediate problems but also instills a sense of trust and confidence in the leadership that can be essential for long-term stability and progress.

Bad leaders like Governor Lawal on the other hand, can be personified as a dark cloud looming over the community they lead, spreading an aura of uncertainty and fear.

Leaders like Lawal possess a volatile temperament, prone to sudden outbursts and erratic behaviour that creates a constant sense of unease. Their vision and goals are often unclear, causing confusion and a lack of direction amongst their followers.

They exhibit a lack of empathy, disregarding the needs and opinions of their team members. Self-centered and egotistical, they prioritize their own interests over the well-being of others. Their communication style is abrasive and dismissive, leaving their subordinates feeling devalued and demotivated.

Like a stagnant pond, a bad leader fails to foster growth and development within the society. They discourage new ideas, discourage innovation, and resist change, stifling the potential of those they lead.
Furthermore, a bad leader is not accountable for his own mistakes, instead shifting blame onto others the way Lawal attempted to shift blames onto the Federal Government. They lack transparency and integrity, making it difficult to trust their judgment and decisions.

Like Lawal, all bad leaders can be personified as an oppressive force, casting a dark shadow over the society. They possess characteristics such as volatility, lack of empathy, unclear vision, and poor communication, hindering the growth and success of those they lead.

Leaders are expected to face challenges head-on, confront threats, and find ways to address them proactively. Running from threats may temporarily alleviate immediate pressure, but it ultimately undermines the trust and confidence of both the state and stakeholders.

By avoiding the immediate threats in the state he leads, Lawal has missed an opportunity to demonstrate courage, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Threats and challenges present valuable opportunities for growth and innovation. Leaders who embrace and navigate through these difficult situations inspire their teams, build trust, and foster a culture of resilience and adaptability.

Running from threats also hampers the development of effective strategies and solutions. Without facing challenges directly, leaders may fail to understand the root causes of issues or overlook potential opportunities for improvement. This avoidance can lead to a reactive rather than proactive approach, which often results in poor decision-making and missed opportunities for growth.

In its present state, Zamfara needs strong leaders who can provide clarity, direction, and stability in times of crisis. By avoiding threats, Lawal has undermined his own credibility and the confidence of those he leads.

Gouging from Dauda Lawal’s actions, voters in Zamfara State must have learnt the necessity to scrutinize the actions of politicians and hold them accountable for their behaviour in the future.

By demanding integrity, adherence to ethical standards, and a genuine dedication to public service, Zamfara voters can discourage such crass political opportunism and promote politicians who prioritize ther well-being.

We Remember Ken Saro Wiwa, 27 Years On!

By Sobomabo Jackrich

I am Ambassador Sobomabo Jackrich, Executive Director of the Network For Defence of Democracy and Good Governance.

Today is the 27th memorial anniversary of the brutal execution of Ken Saro Wiwa and 8 others.

I stand with the families of Ogoni 9, and the Ogoni 4, ( AKA Ogoni 13 ) together with thousands of other Ogoni martyrs who paid the Supreme price, in the days of the struggle to restore our hope.

They paid the Supreme price for the Social, Economic, and Environmental Emancipation of Ogoniland, Niger Delta, Nigeria and Africa. May Thier gentle souls, rest in peace.

The year 2022 is historic for many reasons, as the 4th of December shall make it 30 years since the Ogoni people, under the Leadership of Ken Saro Wiwa, took their destinies into their hands and courageously crossed the Rivers of Fear and gave QUIT NOTICE to Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria and Joint Venture Partners.

They were seeking to actualize the hope of the Ogoni people for a better life. As our hero, Ken Saro Wiwa said in one of his last interviews, THE STRUGGLE IS ABOUT HOPE.

I quote:

The Struggle itself is about HOPE. If I didn’t think that there was hope in the future, I will not be fighting.
I will not be encouraging anybody to struggle the way we are doing now!

Yes, there must be HOPE! (Ogoni) is a rich land. It is a well blessed land.
If we can get the oppressors out of the way. If we can get those practicing double standards out of the way. If we can get the pollution to stop. I am sure that Ogoni will be a happy land.

Ken Saro Wiwa’s works, hopes and dreams were for our happiness.

One of our greatest political thinkers and scholar of blessed memory, Prof. Claude Ake, had this to say of the Ogoni struggle.

Ken Saro Wiwa
Ken Saro Wiwa

And I quote, “Ogoni is the Conscience of this country, they have risen above our slave culture of silence. They have found the courage to be free. And they have evolved a political consciousness which denies power to rogues, bullies, fools and hypocrites.

For better or for worse, OGONILAND HOLDS OUR HOPE. Battered and bleeding, they struggle on to realize our HOPES and to restore our dignity. If they falter we die.

And I have come today with the same message of HOPE, building upon the foundation of our fathers and heroes. And Yes, there must be hope.

As we reflect upon the great life and legacy of this GREAT MESSENGER OF HOPE! We must always remember his words, that ” You can Kill the Messenger, but you cannot Kill the message. The Message of HOPE is still alive today.

Let’s keep HOPE alive! For i see RIVERS OF HOPE flowing from Bane in Ogoniland through all parts of Rivers State, Niger Delta, Nigeria and Africa.

Let’s work together to make this HOPE a reality.

Thank you!

Re: Which Way For The Enugu State University Of Science And Technology (ESUT)

…Being A Response To An Open Letter To Governor Of Enugu State BY “Dr J.B.C Udem”

By Dr. Gerald Orukwa

A response to this highly convoluted, mendacious, insulting and hate-filled write up by a presumably faceless Dr J.B.C Udem would not have been necessary, but for the condescending language, despicable, unsavoury and sundry allegations laid against His Excellency, Governor IfeanyiUgwuanyi which postured him as part of the problem in ESUT.

Hear “Dr Udem,” ‘Your Excellency Sir, May I inform you, in case you do not know that there is grave yard silence in the State regarding how you are supervising the affairs at ESUT since you took over as Governor’.

It is really an irony that “Dr Udem,” who shortly will be exposed for who he is and represents, did not notice nor draw the attention of His Excellency to this grave- yard silence in the five years of Professor Luke Anike which took ESUT to the Hades, but has become a subject of media blitz following the logical appointment of Professor Charles Eze (an Nsukka Man in his words) as the Acting Vice-Chancellor, alongside other principal Officers of the University on 23rd May 2020.

The truth of the matter is that there are so many “Vice-Chancellors-in-Waiting” who in their convoluted minds think that ESUT is a conquered territory which must function according to their whims and caprices even when the State Government and the University Governing Council are determined to correct the entrenched system failures before bringing in the full complement of Principal Officers of the University, (not just a Vice-Chancellor) to superintend over the University.

For such Characters, they will gather under all names, spread Goebbels style falsehood and propaganda, denigrate sections of the society and foul the environment of peace, but the “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the awesome God of David,” will not allow evil to triumph over good.

For the avoidance of any doubt, since the appointment of the three key Acting Principal Officers on 23rd of May 2020, ESUT has been on a trajectory of peace, optimism, and consolidation. These Officers have been in office for a little above 10 months, and have practically brought back the University to life after a near total collapse.

The full compliments of University Management will surely be in place at a time the Governing Council is satisfied with the ongoing administrative and academic reforms.

My disappointment with Dr Udem, who wrote on behalf of the Association of Vice-Chancellors-in-Waiting, Prof Chinedu Aguba and other disgruntled characters, is the malicious and unpretentious hate for the people of Enugu North Senatorial zone who are referred severally and condescendingly in the said write up as “Nsukka People.” It is elementary knowledge that there 3There are 3 Senatorial Zones in Enugu State known to any primary 2 pupil, namely, Enugu East Senatorial Zone Enugu North Senatorial Zone and Enugu West Senatorial Zone.

The sponsored petitioner correctly acknowledged Enugu East and Enugu West Zones, but chose to refer to Enugu North Senatorial Zone as Nsukka Senatorial Zone in his stupid and jaundiced efforts to prove rotation of only the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and not the Principal Officers among the three Senatorial Zones.

“Dr Udem” as the mouthpiece of the Association of “Vice-Chancellors-in-Waiting,” chose not to inform the public that since the inception of ASUTECH, now ESUT (about 40 years ago) Enugu West Senatorial Zone produced all Registrars of the University, with the exception of Mr S.N.P Nwankwo from Enugu East Senatorial Zone who served 5 years.

Thus, for the remaining 35 years, all the Registrars had continued to come from one Senatorial Zone, Enugu West. These, include Late Prof. Samson Ukpabi (Aninri) Prof. Festus Eze (Udi), DR. B.N Uzoigwe (Awgu), Barr.C.C Igbokwe (Udi), Mr Leonard Khama (Aninri), and Barr T,M Ikenwa (Aninri) who is presently the Acting Registrar. No ‘bloody Nsukka man or woman’ has ever been appointed as the Registrar of ESUT till date.

It may interest “Dr Udem” the spokes person of the Association of Vice-Chancellors –in-Waiting and Prof. Chinedu Aguba that Enugu West Senatorial Zone has not only monopolized the position of Registrar, but used that office to heavily skew the Nominal staff disposition in ESUT in terms of local government origin, in favour of Enugu West Zone, particularly Udi Local Government, as can be gleaned from the ESUT Council records shown below:

NOMINAL ROLL RANKING BY SENATORIAL DISTRICTS
Enugu West Senatorial District
S/NO Local Government Area Numbers of Staff Percentage

  1. Udi 458 25.35
  2. Awgu 167 9.24
  3. Ezeagu 163 9.02
  4. Oji River 82 4.54
  5. Aninri 72 3.13
    Total 942 52.13

Enugu North Senatorial District:
S/NO Local Government Area Numbers of Staff Percentage

  1. Nsukka 186 10.30
  2. Igbo Etiti 143 7.91
  3. Udenu 73 4.04
  4. Uzo uwani 60 3.32
  5. Igboeze North 27 1.49
  6. Igboeze South 27 1.49
Total 516 28.55 Enugu East Senatorial District
S/NO Local Government Area Numbers of Staff Percentage:
  7. Nkanu West 202 11.18
  8. Nkanu East 63 3.48
  9. Enugu South 37 2.04
  10. Enugu East 22 1.21
  11. Isi-Uzo 17 0.94
  12. Enugu North 7 0.38
    Total 348 19.23.

Summary of Ranking by Senatorial Districts:
S/NO Senatorial District Numbers of Staff Percentage

  1. Enugu West 942 52.13
  2. Enugu North 516 28.55
  3. Enugu East 348 19.23
    Total 1,806 100

What is perfectly clear is that Enugu West dominates ESUT with 52.13% of staff coming from the Zone.

Udi Local government with 25.35% of its people working in ESUT means that it has more indigenes working in ESUT that the whole of Enugu East Zone and represents nearly 70% of all employees from Enugu East and Enugu North Senatorial Zones.

So, why would these characters have the temerity to speak about nsukanisation of ESUT? What impudence?

In IMT the dominance and Udinization of the institution is reflected in the staff disposition released recently by the institution in which nearly 50% of the employees are from Udi Local Government. This situation in IMT plays out in all institutions of Government in Enugu State, yet other sections of the State have managed to endure this unexplainable dominance.

The same Enugu West Senatorial Zone, Particularly Udi Local Government continued to produce Substantive and Acting Librarians from the inception of ASUTECH/ESUT until the emergence of the current University Librarian, Dr Ifeanyi Ezema in 2018 who outperformed all contestants for the post during interview, including a former University Librarian from Enugu West.

So, in the 40 years history of ASUT/ESUT Library, Dr Ngozi Ene, Mr Akpata and Mr George Igwebuike, all from Udi local government superintend over it for 37 years.

It is also on record that the same Enugu west with the least population geo-politically, has produced the greatest number of Vice-Chancellors from inception whether substantive or Acting, beginning with late Prof Chiweyite Ejike, Prof Mark Anikpo, Prof Ikechukwu Chidobem, and Prof Chidi Ugwu who served for over 8 months as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Where then lays the unfairness in the claim to rotation by ‘Dr Udem” when previous appointments of Principal Officers have been skewed in favour of Enugu West?

“Dr Udem” writing on behalf of Prof Chinedu Aguba, the ASUU Chairman, complained bitterly the way and manner he was removed as the Director of Institute of Education and replaced with Prof, Ursula Nnabueze from ‘Nsukka Zone’, but failed to also report that the Vice-Chairman of ASUU ESUT, Prof Larry Eneje (from ‘Nsukka Zone’) was also relieved of his appointment as HOD of Applied Biology and Brewing, at the same time, for their brazen sabotage of the efforts of Management to commence academic activities on campus and save the university from certain collapse. What explains this level of selfishness and treachery?

Is “Dr Udem” and his sponsors saying that Prof Larry Eneje (an “Nsukka Man”) is inconsequential or that Prof Ursula Nnabueze who is over 10 year senior to Chinedu Aguba as a Professor is not qualified to be appointed simply because she is from Nsukka? What a Shame?

‘Dr Udem’ and his sponsors have to explain how the desperation of Prof. Eze would lead him to remove Prof. Aguba who had presented himself to the Ag. Vice-Chancellor as a friend, but chose to be overwhelmed and suffused by sectional considerations in championing for the removal of the Acting Vice-chancellor in several monitored sectional meetings, and even on the floor of ASUU less than 3 month into his tenure.

For “Dr Udem” to have mentioned the name of Prof Aguba in the now infamous employment scandal under Prof. Luke Anike is either that “Dr Udem” was not properly briefed or that his sponsors believe their role in bringing ESUT to its kneel is hidden. Nothing is hidden.

“Dr Udem” should interrogate how Prof Chinedu Aguba employed his 3 blood relations in addition to 4 four others when no member of his Executive could assist in employing even 1 (one).

In the employment scandal supervised by the former Vice-Chancellor, he allotted seven (7) slots to ASUU which Prof. Aguba appropriated to himself without reference to any member of the Executive.

If ASUU was given 7 slots, why was it that it was only the Chairman that submitted 7 names? ”Dr Udem” should also find out why Prof Aguba’s mates who have more publications than him are still Readers, while he was rapidly promoted Professor over and above his seniors.

Even when the Congress of ASUU decided that no examination would take place without the release of Professorial promotions by the former Vice-Chancellor, Aguba ensured that the exams were held and thereafter had his promotion announced with over 99% of other candidates left out. No internal Strike was ever called by him all through Prof Luke Anike’s Administration, only for him to suddenly wake up to his “responsibilities” following the appointment of an Acting Vice-Chancellor. If this is not sectionalism, treachery and selfishness, we wonder what represents a bad labour leader.

For the avoidance of doubts, all those employed by Prof Luke Anike after the dissolution of the Governing Council were cashiered out by the new Council. Prof Aguba’s, “blood” relations were amongst the over 100 such cases considered as unauthorised employment by the University Governing Council.

Perhaps, what “Dr Udem” is suggesting is that the Ag. Vice-Chancellor should have protected the “blood brothers” of Prof Aguba so as to be in his good books.
“Dr Udem”, in an attempt to hoodwink the public reported that Prof Gab Agu was removed from Office as Dean of Faculty by the Ag. Vice-Chancellor and replaced with “another Nsukka man” on purported and unverified allegations.

‘In fact, he was removed even before a Committee instituted to investigate allegations levelled against him was inaugurated’. We honestly think that “Dr Udem” should have saved Prof Gab Agu the embarrassment of explicating his case in the Media.

The reality is that the University Management had set up a Committee to look into the petitions over the Deanship election between Professors Gab Agu and Osita Ogbu Nnamani which polarised the Faculty and made its proper functioning impossible. The Committee painstakingly looked at these written petitions, and also had audience with each contestant.

The Committee observed that the allegations which the two Professors levied against each other were too criminal and weighty to be ignored, and as such recommended that the two mutually accused persons should step aside to allow for a full investigation into the weighty allegations. These recommendations were endorsed by the Governing Council in its 76th meeting held on 11th February, 2021, and thereafter, Prof Frank Asogwah, as the only fulltime Professor in the Faculty, was appointed Ag. Dean of Law.

Did “Dr Udem” expect the Management to gloss over the cases of Result Mutilations preferred against Prof Gab Agu, or overlook the allegation that Prof Osita Ogbu Nnamani is not a full Professor in ESUT? Perhaps “Dr Udem” would have preferred the importation of a Professor of Law from another University for appointment as Ag. Dean, simply because Prof Frank Asogwah who circumstances threw up is an “Nsukka Man.” What a Shame?

Again, in the wicked desperation to create a nonexistent composition in the Management of ESUT, “Dr Udem,” his bunch of desperados and Nsukka haters spared no shame in misinforming the public.

The truth is that there is nowhere in the organogram of any University where Director of Works and Chief Security Officers are part of the Management team. As a matter of fact, the Chief Security Officer is a middle level Officer of the University.

It is not also true that Prof Frank Ezugwu is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of ESUT. He is currently the Provost ESUT College of Medicine – a position into which he was duly elected following the expiration of the tenure of the former Provost, Late Professor Anthony Ugochukwu.

So, why this inciting misinformation?
Talking about domination of ESUT Management by Enugu North Senatorial Zone, “Dr Udem” and his co-travellers must be reminded that in the recent past, the whole Management team was populated by Enugu West Zone.

For instance, at the time Prof. Chiweyite Ejike was the Vice-Chancellor of ASUTECH, Prof Festus Eze was the Registrar, Mr Akachukwu, the Bursar, and Dr Ngozi Ene, the University Librarian; all these Principal Offices were from one Zone.

As recent as 2011, the Management and Council was also dominated by Enugu West, precisely Udi LGA. Details are as follows:

  1. Visitor ——- His Excellency Barr. Sullivan Chime (UDI
  2. Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council —- Chief ChiloOffiah (UDI)
  3. Deputy-Vice-Chancellor —– Prof. A.E Uzoagulu (UDI)
  4. Registrar —- Barr. C.C Igbokwe —- (UDI)
  5. University Librarian —- Mr George Igwebuike (UDI
  6. Provost College of Medicine —– Prof. A.O.C Akpa (Awgu).

So why didn’t “Dr Udem” and his co-travellers draw the attention of the Public to the above skewed appointments and skewed staff disposition in ESUT? “Dr Udem” should please do himself and his sponsors a favour by keeping to the popular aphorism that “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones”

The unwarranted onslaught on His Excellency and the people of Enugu North in the open letter to the Governor by “Dr J.B.C Udem” represents the mindset of desperados who are neither tutored by history nor guided by reality. ESUT will never fall into the hands of scavengers, who have made progress impossible in the University.

The said letter has nothing to do with the composition of ESUT Management, but everything to do with those who have assumed the post of Vice-Chancellors- in- Waiting and feel that except Prof Eze is intimidated out; their pipe dreams will never be achieved.
It is also on record that since the inception of Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo, eleven years now, Enugu West has continued to produce the Rector of the institution till date.

Also Prof. Edwin Onyeneje from Enugu West (Udi) was Rector of IMT Enugu for 4 years and was succeeded by Prof. Iloeje from Enugu West zone (Udi) who was in office for five years. Who is fooling who? Where was the likes of Dr. J.B.C Udem and his cohorts then?

Why the desperation and hullabaloo for the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor of ESUT when it is obvious and certain that whenever such appointment is made, the appointee will be in office for five secured years which is the tenure of the office?

Why the stereotyping and blackmailing of Nsukka people all the time? What is the offence an Nsukka man? Enough is really enough.

Re: How Gov. Ugwuanyi Is Playing Ethnic Politics With ESUT VC Appointment

By Tochukwu Madukwe

Some Professors and academics from Enugu West zone, especially from Awgu, Aninri, Oji, Udi Ezeagu axis, who believe and have been lobbying to be appointed the substantive Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been sponsoring and planting some mischievous and false stories on social media platforms to malign the person, office and government of the Enugu State, under Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, create division and confusion in Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) over the appointment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles U. Ezeh, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University.

These 16 professors, who believe individually that they are already crowned as the VC of ESUT, have had series of meeting at La Nueva Hotel Independence Layout Enugu owned by a businessman from Awgu LGA. One of such meetings was held at the hotel on October 10, 2020 in which a decision was made to make ESUT ungovernable for the Acting VC until one of them is appointed VC of ESUT.

What beats the imagination of all well meaning people is that these characters angling and lobbying to be appointed VC of ESUT are the ones spewing and sponsoring falsehoods and attacks against Governor Ugwuanyi and the visitor of the University.

One continues to imagine the kind of leadership they will provide if by omission or commission any of them is appointed VC of ESUT. Since these 16 professors are known now, the state and the security agencies should monitor closely their nocturnal and clandestine activities and hold them responsible for any infraction in the smooth running of ESUT.

One of such stories titled “How Gov. Ugwuanyi is playing Ethnic Politics with ESUT VC appointment” was planted in the popular social media news app called operanewsapp.com, where they alleged that Ugwuanyi was playing and promoting ethnic politics with Eze’s appointment without stating how and when.

The mindset of the writers of this sponsored and malicious article is anchored on mischief, bigotry and divisiveness as they neither have history, convention nor practice behind them.

Appointments of Vice Chancellors and Acting Vice Chancellors in ESUT have always been based principally on equity, competence, circumstances on the ground and the Visitor’s discretion.

So, apart from appointing the substantive VCs in rotation from amongst the three Senatorial zones, it is on record and verifiable that these underlisted academics have since 1999 acted as Vice Chancellors of ESUT and heaven didn’t fall and nobody accused the university owners, Visitor or Governor of playing or promoting ethnic politics. They include:

  1. Prof. T.C Nwodo — Feb, 3rd- August 4th 1999, (6 Months)
  2. Prof. Mark Anikpo –‘ 4th August 1999 to February 2, 2000 (6 Months) and,
  3. Prof Chidi Ugwu 19th Nov. 2009 to June 21, 2010 (7 Months)

All these acting appointments were all made at a time of little or no emergency. Yet, in the discretion of the appointing authorities/Visitors ( Adewunmi Agbaje, Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime) the University needed these stop gap appointments to mitigate certain developments.

If these acting appointees who are/were from Enugu East and Enugu West could spend minimum of 6 months at a time of no known emergency in the University, what reason explains the holding of oppositional meetings and labeling Governor Ugwuanyi, who is also the university visitor, “Sectional”, just in a desperate move to remove a barely four months Acting appointee, Prof. Charles Eze; who is acclaimed to be changing the sad narrative in ESUT. Is it because Prof. Charles Eze is from Enugu North, in particular from Nsukka Local Government?

Or is it because he is incompetent? If no, had Enugu North group or Nsukka group held any meeting nor labeled HE Sullivan Chime as Sectional in order to push Prof Chidi Ugwu out of office even after spending seven months in office?

Why would any right thinking individual from Enugu West ( Awgu or Udi) engage in this perfidy barely four months of Acting appointment of Prof Charles Eze?

Does it not show bad judgment and bad character to malign Governor Ugwuanyi because of the vaulting ambition of some Professors, who ought to know better?

It is quite unfortunate that the academics that are always critical of the politicians have become more desperate for powers than the politicians.

For the records, on the assumption of office as the Acting Vice Chancellor by Prof Eze on 22nd May 2020, the situation in ESUT as confirmed by all critical stakeholders was described as that of System and Financial Collapse.

The Internally Generated Revenue was depleted with only N18M available and indebtedness of M539 and outstanding staff entitlement of N6Billion; this made it impossible to augment monthly subvention from State Government to pay salary; Lack of fairness and equity in the appointments; selective promotion; gross financial leakages, official academic fraudulence of all kinds, etc.

The list of the new management’s achievements in clearing the mess it inherited is numerous and endless, and continues to reverberate in the University Community and need not detain us here.

This was the same university the immediate past Vice Chancellor inherited in a state of sound financial and academic stead just five years ago. Where were the 16 conspiring Professors when all these things were happening?

What did they do to prevent or curb the mess? The 16 conspiring Professors did not accuse the Acting VC of non-performance or financial profligacy.

Their only grouse against him and Gov. Ugwuanyi is that both of them are from Nsukka. Why this Nsukka phobia? Have they forgotten that Prof. Eze is a substantive Deputy Vice Chancellor? He is overqualified to be Acting Vice Chancellor. So, why the blackmail of HE Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi over nothing?

What should be the greatest preoccupation of the 16 conspiring Professors should be how to support Prof. Ezeh led team in addressing the stinking rots it inherited in ESUT and not to embark on campaign of calumny against Governor Ugwuanyi to appoint substantive vice chancellor from Enugu West zone.

When and how the substantive Vice Chancellor will be appointed is at the discretion of the Visitor and Council. The Council and the Visitor know what is happening in ESUT and what must be done to bring ESUT back to stability.

Without mincing word or sounding hyperbolic, Gov. Ugwuanyi is the most fair-minded and equitable governor Enugu State has had since 1999. He has evenly and equitablely distributed developmental projects and appointments across the three senatorial zones unlike before now.

Madukwe writes Agbani road, Enugu State
