Agada Supporters Allege N150m Fraud, Move to Petition EFCC Against Labour Party Leadership

Supporters of former Labour Party presidential aspirant, Arc. Dr. Peter Agada, have accused the party leadership of fraudulently obtaining N150 million from their principal and are preparing to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the matter.

The allegation was contained in a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday by former Labour Party stakeholders, Obidient movement promoters and members of the Arc. Peter Agada Presidential Campaign Council nationwide.

The statement, jointly signed by Prince Temilade Craig and Dr. Blessing Elaigwu, alleged that the Labour Party leadership accepted nomination fees and financial contributions from Agada despite having allegedly resolved beforehand not to allow him participate in the party’s presidential primary election.

The group described the development as a betrayal of trust and demanded an immediate refund of all monies allegedly paid by the former aspirant and his supporters.

According to the statement, the disputed amount totals N150 million, comprising N50 million paid for the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms and an additional N100 million allegedly contributed towards the Labour Party’s national convention in Umuahia and other support activities.

“The fees obtained by the party totaled N150 million, being N50 million for expression of interest and nomination forms and another N100 million as induced contributions to the Umuahia national convention and other party support activities, which were obtained from our presidential aspirant, Arc. Dr. Peter Agada, under the pretext and assurances of the party’s support for his presidential race,” the statement said.

The stakeholders based their allegations on comments credited to Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Barr. Kenneth Asogwa, who reportedly stated that the party’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria had been taken long before the presidential primary and ratified by the party’s national convention.

According to the Agada camp, the statement amounted to an admission that the party accepted funds from an aspirant who was never intended to participate in the contest.

The group questioned why Agada was allowed to purchase nomination forms, make financial contributions and undergo screening if the party had already settled on restricting the presidential race to Southern aspirants.

“If the decision to restrict the presidential ticket of the party to only aspirants of Southern Nigeria was truly taken, why did the party go ahead to issue presidential expression of interest and nomination forms to Arc. Peter Agada, knowing full well that he is from the Middle Belt of Nigeria?” the stakeholders asked.

They further alleged that Agada was screened for the exercise and continued preparations for the primary before allegedly receiving a disqualification letter barely two days to the election.

The group said the circumstances surrounding the development have raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability and fairness within the party.

In addition to challenging the decision that excluded Agada from the presidential race, the stakeholders accused the Labour Party leadership of double standards in its implementation of resolutions reached at the party’s Umuahia National Convention.

They argued that while convention resolutions were cited to justify the zoning arrangement and Agada’s disqualification, similar resolutions affirming elected state executive councils had allegedly been ignored in some states.

The statement alleged that party officials in states including Ogun, Oyo and Edo were removed and replaced after the convention despite having been ratified by delegates.

The stakeholders maintained that such actions contradicted the party’s claim that convention resolutions are binding and inviolable.

“The point we make here is that if it is true by yesterday’s published confession of the leadership that convention resolutions of the party are inviolate, why have the leaders of the party unilaterally abolished the convention resolutions which ratified and affirmed the congress-elected state council executives?” the group queried.

The Agada supporters also alleged that the zoning arrangement was designed to prevent a Middle Belt aspirant from emerging as the party’s presidential candidate, describing the development as politically motivated.

They expressed disappointment over the outcome of the party’s presidential primary and warned that recent events could further damage the party’s image among Nigerians who expect fairness and inclusiveness in political competition.

The stakeholders vowed to pursue the matter through appropriate legal and institutional channels, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable.

“We hereby put them on notice of hearing soonest from the EFCC on our political networks’ jointly contributed campaign funds which they obtained under false pretenses from our dear principal, Arc. Dr. Peter Agada,” the statement declared.

The group added that recovering the funds allegedly contributed by Agada and his supporters had become a matter of principle and accountability, stressing that they would not relent until the issue is addressed.

As of the time of filing this report, the Labour Party leadership had not issued any official reaction to the allegations or the planned EFCC petition.

HURIWA Slams NANS, Shinkafi Over Attacks On Matawalle, Says “Go Back to Class, Face Real Student Issues”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has dismissed recent calls by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and a former governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Alhaji Sani Shinkafi demanding the sack of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, describing the attacks as politically motivated, misplaced and diversionary.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwuniko, HURIWA described the threats of nationwide protests by NANS over demands for Matawalle’s removal as reckless, unserious and far removed from the core mandate of a student body. The group accused NANS of acting as political errand runners rather than advocates for students’ welfare and the improvement of Nigeria’s failing education sector.

HURIWA advised NANS and its leadership to “return to classrooms and lecture halls” and refocus on issues that directly affect students, including poor funding of education, decaying infrastructure in universities, incessant strikes, and the alarming decline in academic standards. According to the group, Nigerian universities are increasingly being reduced to the level of glorified primary schools due to chronic underfunding and neglect.

“The duty of NANS is not to issue ultimatums to the President or to campaign for the sack of ministers. Their responsibility is to defend the interests of Nigerian students whose future is being mortgaged by poor budgeting for education, overcrowded classrooms, ill-equipped laboratories and demoralised lecturers,” HURIWA said.

The rights group noted that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has consistently raised concerns about inadequate funding and the collapse of academic standards, stressing that these are the areas where NANS should be deploying its energy and influence. It added that protests should be channelled towards demanding better learning conditions, improved welfare for students and lecturers, and meaningful reforms in the education sector.

“NANS should stop grandstanding and playing to the gallery of politicians. They should work with lecturers, engage policymakers constructively and fight for a system that guarantees quality education and a secure future for Nigerian students. Threatening protests over the fate of a minister is not only misplaced, it is irresponsible,” HURIWA stated.

On the criticisms coming from Alhaji Sani Shinkafi Shinkafi, HURIWA described his interventions as overtly political and driven by partisan interests rather than genuine concern for national security. The group pointed out that Zamfara State remains a hotbed of intense political rivalry between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and that Shinkafi’s comments must be understood within that context.

HURIWA noted that Shinkafi, now aligned with the PDP in Zamfara State after previously belonging to APGA, is widely perceived as working in the political interest of the incumbent administration in the state. According to the group, his repeated attacks on Matawalle are linked to growing fears within rival political camps that the former Zamfara governor and current Minister could emerge as a strong contender under the APC platform in the 2027 gubernatorial election.

“When Shinkafi speaks on Matawalle, Nigerians must listen with discernment. This is not a neutral intervention. It is a politically coloured attack rooted in Zamfara’s fierce power contest. Shinkafi’s political journey, from APGA to his current alignment, shows clearly where his interests lie,” HURIWA said.

The association warned against the politicisation of security matters and cautioned that reckless accusations and public grandstanding could undermine national stability. It urged all actors to allow due process, evidence-based assessments and institutional mechanisms to address security challenges rather than turning them into tools for political warfare.

HURIWA reaffirmed its position that criticism of public officials must be anchored on facts, national interest and respect for democratic institutions, not partisan fear or opportunism.

The group called on Nigerians to remain vigilant against attempts to manipulate public opinion through politically driven narratives, insisting that both students’ bodies and political actors must act responsibly in the interest of the nation.

Sexual Harassment: CNPP, CSOs Demand Akpabio Steps Aside for Unbiased Investigation, Say Senate President Can’t Be Judge in Own Case

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and civil society organisations (CSOs), under the auspices of the Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs), have addressed the ongoing feud between the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging Senator Akpabio to step aside for fair investigation of the sexual harassment allegation against him.

While addressing the media in Abuja on behalf of the CNPP and the coalition, Hon. Nnaemeka Aleke, Public Relations Officer of the CNCSOs, highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the integrity of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Hon. Aleke emphasized the growing concerns regarding the Senate’s independence, particularly in light of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s endorsement of Senator Akpabio for the position of Senate President. “Many Nigerians perceive this endorsement as an endorsement of corruption and impunity,” the coalition stated. He further noted that the announcement of a recess package for Senators after the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly has led to a significant reduction in opposition voices within the Senate, raising alarms about the independence of the the lawmakers.

The bodies also shed light on several unresolved allegations of corruption surrounding Senator Akpabio. Hon. Aleke cited calls for an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into Akpabio’s alleged diversion of N700 billion during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State. “An audit report has indicated financial infractions exceeding N1 trillion during his governorship,” the groups said. Additionally, allegations of misappropriation of over N200 billion in Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) funds during Akpabio’s ministerial role were highlighted.

This is even as the group noted that the conflict between Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has brought serious allegations of sexual harassment to the forefront as Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has formally submitted a petition detailing her experiences, which she publicly recounted during a television interview.

Hon. Aleke pointed out that similar claims were made by Joy Nunieh, the former Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in 2020 without conclusive investigation.

In response to these developments, the CNPP and the CSOs have called for immediate action to address the situation. Their demands include the immediate recusal of Senator Godswill Akpabio from his position as President of the Senate while the allegations against him are investigated. “Senator Akpabio cannot be the Judge in his own case if justice must be seen to have been done,” they asserted. They also demanded that the Senate Committee investigating the allegations must operate with transparency and impartiality, and that the proceedings be broadcast live to ensure accountability and public trust.

Furthermore, the CNPP and CNCSOs demanded that the Chairman of the committee, Senator Neda Imaseun, must also to recuse himself from the investigation due to his apparent bias against the petitioner as not to undermines the integrity of the investigative process.

Hon. Aleke concluded that the bodies were stressing the importance of upholding the principles of justice, accountability, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their status. “Nigeria’s reputation and the integrity of our Senate are at stake. We cannot afford to trivialize these serious allegations or allow them to go unaddressed,” he declared.

The political parties and the civil society coalition noted that their next line of action will be made known in the event that the outlined demands were not met.
