107 Anti-Corruption Crusaders Want Tinubu To Cleanse EFCC Quickly

Following a massive protest in Lagos, a conglomeration of about 107 Anti-Corruption crusade groups led by Crime and Corruption Monitors has impressed on the incoming administration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu to ensure the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is cleansed of entrenched corrupt leadership symbolized by its current Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The Anti-Corruption crusade Conglomerate speaking after the protest which terminated at the Youths Sports Complex, Lagos, pointed out that EFCC is an important government agency in Nigeria, established primarily to rid the society of corruption and not conceived as an agency for settling scores for political godfathers.

The convener of the conglomerate, Idowu Bello who read the statement in the Lagos rally warned that “If a government agency expected to fight crime is found going about its business in a manner that mimics witch-hunt and selective justice while also being unable to deal with the corruption going on within its own workforce, the nation is headed for real time crises, conflict of confidence.”

He noted that despite government’s claim of making the fight against corruption and related practices a top priority, EFCC, the agency charged with the execution of the war, is in questions over mounting allegations of monumental corrupt practices.

“Allegations that about 80 per cent of cases under EFCC investigation are not taken to court. EFCC offices now literally serve as courtrooms.

“Last week, Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, alleged that Bawa demanded the sum of $2million from him as bribe to stop a purported probe against him.

“Even before Abdulrasheed Bawa was presented as substantive EFCC Chairman, he has been arrested and detained by the anti-graft agency in 2019 for selling at least 244 trucks worth between N20-30 million each to his proxies at N100,000 per unit.

“He is also accused of recently expanding a large amount of money to the tune of $300,000 for hotels and other activities, which is far and beyond his income as civil servant, during a visit to Mecca with his family on a lesser Hajj.

“There are also allegations of connivance with the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami in auctioning of sea vessels holding crude oil seized by the Federal Government, violating Section 31(2) and (4) of the EFCC Act 2004.

“Malami and Bawa also allegedly authorized the sale of vessels by companies under EFCC prosecution for similar offence of illegal bunkering.
“Bawa and Malami were fingered in the discontinuation of a N25billion criminal charge against Senator Danjuma Goje without any justification after over seven years of diligent investigation and prosecution.

“Equally, the incident of Abel Isah, an EFCC cadet in Sokoto who was allegedly beaten to death by superior officers for refusing to sign off on incomplete exhibits is still fresh in the minds of Nigerians,” the statement read.

The Crusaders demanded the immediate sack of Bawa as EFCC Chairman and to be subjected to wholistic probe the way his predecessor Ibrahim Magu was treated.

“Like every other agency of government everywhere, there are global standards of practice for officials who had been accused of gross misconduct to step aside while investigations were conducted to ascertain the veracity of the allegations.

“As pointed out earlier several eminent eminent Nigerians have claimed to possess evidence of corrupt practices, breach of public trust and abuse of office against the EFCC and its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

“It is based on the above observations that the Crime and Corruption Monitors and 107 Anti Corruption Crusade Groups deem it necessary to demand that Abdulrasheed Bawa excuses himself from office and surrender for investigation.

“We demand that if Bawa remains adamant, he be forced out and subjected to comprehensive probe the way his predecessor Ibrahim Magu was made to do.

“Since it is obvious by now that the Buhari administration which brought Abdulrasheed Bawa is not disposed to initiating action, we call on the incoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make it first priority to cleanse the EFCC of corrupt leaders.

“Corruption is one of the most serious social and security challenges facing Nigeria today which is the more reason why Tinubu should see it as an existential matter that needs to be addressed and tackled robustly and defeated once for all.

“No nation can aspire to greatness or seek to remain secure and safe when corruption and other corrupt practices are allowed to find their way into all its vital institutions including the agency saddled with the responsibility of fighting it.

“For this reason, corruption must be confronted with the entire will and resolve of the incoming administration beginning with thorough cleansing of the EFCC by first getting Bawa out and subjecting him to probe before extending action to cover other organs and tiers of government in Nigeria without exception.

“Failure to do so will indubitably mean that every effort made the anti-graft agency is headed by suspicious leaders will defeat all development endeavours of the incoming administration and render its task the more difficult and futile.

“We remind the President-elect that National challenges such as the corruption we are faced with should not be treated with levity and condescension.

“Neither should action be limited to targeted individuals or tiers of government. On the contrary, corruption is a cross-national issue that affect every one of us regardless of where we live or come from,” the statement concluded.

Why Senate Should Investigate EFCC Chairman – Niger Delta Youths Say, Demand That Bawa Must Step Aside During Investigation

Youths of the oil-rich Niger Delta region, Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has expressed deep concern about the recent series of allegations leveled against the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, calling on the Senate to conduct a thorough investigation of the EFCC boss.

In a statement signed by the National Coordinator of NDYC, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the youths maintained that “these allegations, if proven true, have the potential to severely undermine the credibility and effectiveness of the commission.

“It is therefore essential that a thorough investigation is conducted into these allegations”, the statement said.

“In light of these serious allegations, we are calling upon the Senate to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure transparency, accountability, and the preservation of the EFCC’s integrity.

“As custodians of our democracy, the senate holds the power to make crucial decisions that directly impact the well-being and future of our country especially as it concerns key institutions like the EFCC.

“This will further demonstrate your commitment to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and accountability and it will also reaffirm the trust of the Nigerian citizens in the legislative process, showing that their concerns are heard and addressed with sincerity.

“We implore you to prioritize the greater good of the Nigerian people over any undue influence or personal agenda that may compromise the pivotal role of the EFCC in combating corruption.

“The EFCC, as an institution charged with the responsibility of combating economic and financial crimes, plays a crucial role in our society.

“It is imperative that the commission operates with the highest standards of professionalism, credibility, and trustworthiness. Any allegations of misconduct or impropriety involving its leadership must be treated with utmost seriousness”, the statement said.

The Niger Delta Youth Congress said that it recognizes the importance of a fair, unbiased and thorough investigation process and in the best interest of justice and the reputation of the EFCC, saying “we vehemently request that Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa step aside from his position while the investigations are ongoing.

“This step would ensure that the investigations are not influenced or compromised in any way, allowing for an impartial examination of the allegations brought against him.

“Moreover, we call upon the chairman of the EFCC Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the sources of funds that facilitated his accommodation during the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

“Reports indicate that he secured six opulent rooms at the Hilton Hotel in Mecca, and similarly resided in Sheraton in Jeddah, incurring a staggering expenditure nearing $300,000.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, Mr. Bawa owes the Nigerian public and the Senate a detailed account of the origin of these substantial funds.

“We trust in the ability of the Nigerian Senate to conduct an independent and thorough investigation into these allegations, taking into account the principles of due process and the rule of law.

“We urge the Senate to act swiftly and transparently in order to restore public confidence in the EFCC and reaffirm its commitment to the fight against corruption.

“The Niger Delta Youth Congress calls upon all relevant stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian public to support this call for Mr. Bawa to step aside and for a thorough investigation into the series of allegations levelled against him.

“We must all work together to ensure that the EFCC remains an effective institution in the fight against corruption, upholding the principles of justice and accountability.

“We remain committed to the development and progress of Nigeria, and we firmly believe that a transparent investigation into these allegations will contribute to the overall fight against corruption in our beloved nation”, the statement concluded.

CNG States Position On Reported Plots Against May 29 Handover, Wants Emefiele, Other Key Buhari’s Appointees Stopped From Fleeing Nigeria

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has said that it is, as usual, worried by “the growing uncertainties created by certain destabilizing forces in the country surrounding the May 2029 transition to a new administration elected through the democratic poll processes of February 2023.

The CNG Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday noted that “these concerns have been variously hinted at by the nation’s apex security organ, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), the Military high command and the Nigeria Police Force without visible proactive measures put in place to nip them.”

He maintained that the CNG is also worried about reports that some top officials of the outgoing administration are planning to leave the country ahead of the handover, obviously in a bid to cover-up their serial misconduct in office and to avoid being called to account.

He added, “We are especially worried by reports that Godwin Emefiele who has held one of the most important offices in the country as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria throughout all the years of Nigeria’s economic and financial turmoil, is among those planning to flee abroad.”

Observations

The CNG observed that “just recently, precisely on Monday, May 15, 2023, the Nigeria Police headquarters confirmed that plots to scuttle the May 29th official inauguration of the new administration of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors at the state level are real.

“We observe that earlier, on May 4 2023, the nation’s Military High Command also alerted on plans to scuttle the May 29 handover and warned the plotters to shelve the idea.

“It specifically said its officers are on standby to forestall any unwanted happening in the country before, during and after the transition.

“We observe also that two weeks earlier, the Defence Headquarters had raised the same alarm that some individuals are plotting with foreign collaborators to disrupt the May 29 inauguration and vowed to track them down.

“We observe that much earlier, the Department of State Services (DSS) had confirmed a clandestine plot by some politicians to derail the handover and install an interim government in Nigeria.

“The CNG has observed also that allegations are growing strong of Emefiele’s planned study leave abroad, presumably to escape Nigeria before the inauguration and avoid questions around alleged terrorism financing, other economic and financial misdemeanors and the introduction of the currency redesign policy in a bid to create obstacles for Tinubu during the presidential campaign which ended up in mass national suffering and confusion.

“We also note some state governors represented by Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara State have raised the alarm that the the alarm that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman plans an unjust isolated probe of only outgoing governors while excluding the Federal Government functionaries and even the Presidency.

“We also observe that the EFCC boss is making this vow without mention of scrutinizing the EFCC itself were recent reports made an embarrassing revelation of officers fighting to the point of death over recovered items in Sokoto”, the CNG stared.

CNG’s Stand

“It is in view of these and other potential national threats and likely impediments to the smooth takeoff of the incoming administration, that the CNG declares the following definite positions:

ON Plots Against Handover

“1. To strongly repudiate, in all ramifications, any attempt by any individual or group, to bring about any situation that could lead to scuttling or in anyway postponing the scheduled handover of leadership to the new duly elected federal administration of Bola Tinubu and state governors on May 29.

“2. To demand from the DSS urgent proactive action to checkmate the maneuvers of the perpetrators of the evil scheme and, most importantly, to trace and expose the extent of the plot, arrest and prosecute not only the executors of the plot, but its sponsors and all individuals or groups in anyway linked to it.

“3. To invite the DSS to note that Nigerians would not be disposed to accepting situations deliberately caused by vested personal interests, under whatever guise, that potentially threaten destruction and collective mayhem, or bring about greater conflicts that could lead to mass killings and suffering of innocent people.

“4. To demand that anybody or group found remotely involved with the financing, direct execution or concealing information on this sinister and diabolic scheme, be treated appropriately as a treasonable felon and enemy of the state and fellow citizens.

“5. To hold it ridiculous and insane for people with dubious political interests should want to disrupt an otherwise peaceful and orderly democratic process even while candidates and parties directly involved with the process have opted for the path of honour by seeking redress in the court of law.

“6. We repeat here, that on no account should Nigerians be expected to accept a replication of the unfolding deadly conflicts across African countries incited by powerful foreign interests.

On Fleeing Plans By Officials

“We demand that security agencies in the country including all the anti-graft agencies work in synergy and ensure that all critical office holders in the outgoing administration such as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele did not sneak out of the country before May 29th.

“We demand that when the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari bows out of office all key office holders must be asked to clear themselves of all pending corruption and other allegations against them.

“We insist, in particular, that the CBN governor must be made to give an account of his tenure to the incoming administration.
We demand that if any study leave has been approved for Emefiele or any other suspected official, it should be canceled in the interest of peaceful transfer of power, accountability and good governance.”

On EFCC

“We reject the purported plan to limit the searchlight to only outgoing state governors and demand demand that the EFCC Chairman carries out a wholistic probe by extending the beam on the Presidency, Federal Government ministries, parastatals and cabinet members of the outgoing administration.

“We also demand a thorough search into allegations against the EFCC itself as well as the disabling volume of debt amassed for the country by the outgoing administration”, the CNG Spokesperson said.

NASS Leadership: More Protests Trail APC Zoning Formula

The controversy trailing the All Progressives Congress (APC) zoning formula for the position of presiding officers of the 10th National Assembly is yet to abate, as youths drawn from the North Central have said the region would not settle for anything less.

The youths, under the aegis of the North Central Youths Stakeholders Forum and North Central Youths Stakeholders Forum and the Middle Belt Forum, specifically said the region would only accept the Senate Presidency and Speakership of the House of Representatives.

In a statement, the Leader of the NCYSF, Mohammed A Mohammed, said the groups were behind the decision reached at the recent meeting held by governors of the region and National Assembly members-elect, not to accept the decision of the party.

Mohammed contended that the APC zoning arrangement was a deliberate attempt to undermine the contributions of the North-Central to the survival of the party and its victory at the February 25th general elections and subsequent polls.

He said: “We find it unbecoming that other regions that performed abysmally at the polls are given preference in zoning arrangement of the APC NWC while relegating the North Central which contributed optimally to the victory of the APC and its Presidential Candidate would be literally denied any principal position in the coming National Assembly.

“It is all the more insulting that even to consider the North Central for the third position in the legislative houses is subject of debate and speculation.

“In the light of this, we wish to invite the intervention of all stakeholders in the APC to impress on the NWC of the party and all those behind this agenda to rescind, withdraw, review and reverse this unpopular decision and in the alternative, allow the elected federal legislators to form their leadership.”

He called on the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to stand on the side of truth and justice by supporting the North Central.

“We call on the incoming President to do all he could to reclaim his statesmanship by supporting what clearly is the popular will of the people against those who want to subvert it.

It does not gladden anyone to think that the relegation of the North Central after the central role it played in the emergence of the coming administration in spite of all the odds, is calculated to diminish the rising political relevance of the region.

“For the avoidance of doubt therefore, and for those who have ears to hear, the North Central would never settle for any other position lower than the Senate Presidency and Speakership of the House of Representatives,” he said

Dennis Aikoriogie: Labour Party Template Will Turn Around Edo’s Fortunes

Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie is a leading aspirant for Edo State Governor in 2024 under the platform of the Labour Party (LP). His wide experience in the management of men and materials and exposure to several associations at home and abroad, come as his strongest weapons as he seeks for Edo State’s top job. He talks to Nduka Nwosu on his plans for the state if he emerges governor

Dennis Aikoriogie, or Dennis Peter Obi as supporters love to call him, is passionate about embracing the ideals of the Labour Party, its leader and Presidential candidate Peter Obi.

He is like the members of the Obidient Movement who dominate the Twitter space to make a case for a new Nigeria where due process, law and order must take centre stage.

There is no doubt an interaction with the Labour Party leader must have further galvanised the Edo governorship hopeful into some turbo charged mood raring to go.

Aikoriogie said: “I have been part of the Obidient Movement from day one. The leader has shown what it takes to lead. I believe PDP and APC have failed Nigerians. They have failed to meet the expectations of the average Nigerian.”

On why he wants to be the next person occupying Government House Benin City, he explained that governance is all about leadership and that for a long while, there has been a leadership vacuum in the state, which is why development has been slow.

Aikoriogie believes nothing is more important now than action, taking the bull by the horn, which is to translate his ideas of re-building Edo to fit into a 21st century modern state where things work.

His experience in the Diaspora and being a home boy would combine to get the best results, he further argues.

The current governor Godwin Obaseki and past governors of the state, he insists, have done their best to bring Edo State to where it is currently.

However, the time has come to make Edo a signature state, a reference point among the other states of the federation.

“I have what it takes to execute that assignment in eight years,” he assures.

Edo State, which is a hub connecting the west, north and east of the country, he says, should be a masterpiece in infrastructure development. Sadly, this is not the case.

The roads are dilapidated, flood and erosion are still a part of the problem ravaging the state after many years where these issues have been debated in the public space with the aim of taking it to the next level. He says not much has been done to dredge the Ikpoba River where all the waste in the city is emptied.

Unfortunately, the LP governorship hopeful is not impressed that not much has happened to turn around the fortunes of the state. He believes the Peter Obi model of governance in Anambra State would take Edo State to the next level. He has detailed how he intends to do that which can be found on his website: www.dennis.aikoriogie.com.

“We can do better. A Labour Party government driven by my administration will address these needs,” he insists.

On transparency, Aikoriogie says he wants to plug the loopholes that create room for non-transparency and non-performance.

“We have a poor infrastructure network. These issues will be addressed through my masterplan and my seven-point agenda which is infrastructure development-oriented stretching to roads, health, education, youth unemployment et al.”

Health facilities, he observed, “are still not upgraded in tune with the state-of-the-art demands for modern hospitals.

“The Stella Obasanjo Specialist Hospital (for women and children) built by Governor Lucky Igbinedion is under-performing.

“The distance between the x-ray centre and the admission ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is long and not ideal for a sick patient. Besides, the admission process is complex.

“In Edo North, the Auchi General Hospital, which was upgraded to a teaching hospital, is still not meeting the health needs of the people from that part of the state, both tertiary and primary. Admission requirements of these hospitals make them inaccessible.

“Our hospitals are a shadow of what ought to be, Governor Oshiomhole built an arm of the specialist hospital in Benin run by consultants and the cost of treatment is beyond the reach of the common man.”

Edo Central, he promises, will have good hospitals and he would ensure there would be primary health centres in every local government area of the state.

Aikoriogie is worried about the general state of insecurity but more worrisome is the rising state of kidnapping and wanton killing of farmers by herders who masquerade as Fulani herders in the state. Farmers hardly go to their farms, and this has brought about famine and untold hardship to many homes in Edo State.

The chief executive officer of Global Hobnob LLC of New York and Hobnob Media Consultancy Nigeria Limited, has a good message to the farmers and the people of Edo State regarding creating a safe and secure space where Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is given top priority in Edo State: “Weep not my people; the ravening clouds shall not be long victorious; they shall not long possess the sky; they devour the stars only in apparition. Hope is coming,” borrowing from Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s adaptation of Wohipart A. James’ On the Beach at Night poem.

Will his American experience come to play here? He answers in the affirmative adding that whatever experiences garnered would be replicated in Edo State and that there would be partnerships for pro bono services in many departments of governance.

Without the contributions from the likes of Aikoriogie and his Diaspora support groups in Europe and America, the tremendous success of the Obi-dient movement and the LP have enjoyed and still enjoying in the last 9-months would not have been recorded in so swift a short period of time.

The Labour Party should be dispassionate enough to mirror the quality of individuals seeking nominations for the governorship on its platform, if it is seriously interested in a better Edo State, post APC/PDP collateral failure in the last 24-year, since debut of the Fourth Republic.

The Governorship hopeful is aware of the need to generate other sources of revenue beyond funds from federal allocation.

On his website he had this to say on his plans for internally generated revenue (IGR): “A recurring challenge that the nation has is the dwindling importance of crude oil in the global market which is our economic mainstay.

“Dr Osahon as Edo State Governor has the roadmap to diversify the State’s economy from waiting for monthly allocations which prepares him adequately for a post oil economy, where states go cap-in-hand for monthly subvention.”

The University of Benin Alumni Association Board Member for North America is asked to weigh in on his perception of home and the growth of democracy.

His response: “there were the usual irregularities, and many believe contrary to the promises of Mr. President that he would leave behind a legacy of true democracy, INEC failed to deliver on its promises.”

The governorship hopeful points to Rivers State where incumbency played a strong role. “Labour did not do well in Edo against the expectations of many.

“The incumbent governor went round appealing to the emotions of Edolites to vote for members of his party the PDP into the State House of Assembly to save him from being impeached by an assembly that is dominated by the APC members under the control of former Governor Oshiomhole.

Ethnic profiling and voter suppression as well as violence were recorded in Lagos State. Many Labour members were killed in various parts of the country such as Kaduna where a female LP activist was murdered as well as in Enugu where an LP Senatorial candidate was assassinated.

“There was a shocking reverberation on the stellar performance of Labour Party during the Presidential election and what this did to the other parties was a recalibration of their game plan, re-introducing the jungle justice approach of ballot snatching, rewriting of election results, maiming, and killing where necessary with a compromised INEC, and police looking the other way. Expectedly, the users were the opposition.”

Aikoriogie is optimistic that whatever the outcome of the court cases at the Appeal and Supreme Court levels, the Labour Party, which he says took the country by storm, has a bright future ahead.

What the LP needs now, he stresses, is a strong party leadership, which will emerge after the current party leadership tussle.

“The LP must maintain the momentum after taking the country by storm. Agreed we were robbed of victory in many states like Rivers, Lagos, Enugu, Imo, and many parts of the north, we have a state governor in Abia and many members of the House, Senate, and State Houses of Assembly. We will build on these gains to strengthen the party,” he adds.

He also weighs in on the issue of subsidy noting that the $800 million loan should not be tampered with by the outgoing administration, not to talk of sharing out part of the money as handouts to registered families in the national register of 10 million under-privileged Nigerians, “because it would amount to a wasted, fraudulent exercise based on what happened during the Covid 19 pandemic.

“In any case Nigeria has over 120 million below average families who are not registered. Besides, this government has less than two months to go, so why the hurry to disburse the funds?”

Aikoriogie says if the Jonathan Administration with its economic team led by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala had been allowed to remove fuel subsidy at the time it wanted to in 2011, it would have afforded private companies the opportunity to come in and build refineries because they would have been operating at a regime where the price would have been competitive.

“A government subsidised fuel regime is a disincentive to private sector investment because pump price will not be viable or competitive.

“Sadly now, the very people who opposed it would not be tackling this hydra-headed monster at this time.

“Nigeria holds a great promise for the future,” he asserted.

“Once the cabal appropriating the resources of the nation are contained by pulling the rug off their feet, there will be hope for the nation as we move from a nation of consumers to one of producers, which is the key mantra of the LP”, Aikoriogie said.

Enugu Guber Polls 2023: Coalition Of Registered Political Parties Congratulates Mbah

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP), Enugu State has congratulated the Governor-elect of Enugu State in the March 18th 2023 Governorship Election, Dr. Peter Mbah.

The CRPP is made up of state Chairmen and some candidates of other registered political parties that participated in the just concluded election.

The group expressed their appreciation to NdiEnugu for listening to the voice of reason and voting wisely en mass for Dr. Peter Mbah who polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest rival, Hon. Chijioke Edoga of the Labour Party who garnered 157,552 votes.

The group made this assertion when they visited the residence of the Governor -elect yesterday.

According the group, as signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the group, Dr. Afam Ani and Barr. Ken Ikeh respectively, “We shall continue to stand by the Governor-elect since we assured Ndị Enugu that he is the best man for the job and that he will be quick in delivering his campaign promises as epitomized in his catchphrase ‘Tomorrow Is Here’.

In a related development, the group, advised the incoming Governor “to pursue genuine post election reconciliation and peace building across party and zonal levels in the state and be magnanimous in victory in order to unite Ndị Enugu and create a viable atmosphere necessary for the implementation and realization of his campaign promises.”

CRPP also tasked the Governor-elect to “initiate plans as contained in his blueprint to address the perennial water problem in the state capital as soon as possible.”

Buhari Unveils Redesigned Naira Notes

President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled the redesigned naira notes of N200, N500 and N1000 at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the unveiling of the naira notes preceded the virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) with a number of cabinet members in attendance.

The unveiling of the new redesigned notes hitherto slated for Dec. 15 was brought forward to Wednesday by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, who announced the shifting of the date on Tuesday at a media briefing to mark the end of the 288th Monetary Policy Committee meeting and the last in 2022, urged those in possession of the old notes to hurriedly deposit them at the nearest bank branch.

This, he said, would enable them to beat the Jan. 31, 2023 deadline to dispose of the old notes. (NAN)

Northern Patriots Urge Buhari To Disregard Calls For Sack of Emefiele Over Naira Redesign

… Wants CBN To Make Redesigned Naira notes Expirable On Given Date

An amalgamation of patriots in Northern Nigeria under the aegis of Coalition Of Northern Patriots For National Reorientation has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore calls for the sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele over “controversies” trailing the planned redesign some denominations of the Naira notes.

The group also urged the CBN to insert expiry dates on each batch of the redesigned naira notes to discourage the stockpiling of the banknotes by corrupt politicians and persons with questionable sources of income.

Recently, Concerned Northern Forum (CNF) had urged President Buhari to sack the CBN Governor and his team within seven days, threatening to stage “massive protests across the Northern region and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)”.

But in a statement issued in Abuja by spokesman of the Coalition Of Northern Patriots For National Reorientation, Alhaji Ali Abacha, the patriots said only groups sponsored by corrupt politicians can kick against the Naira redesign.

According to the Patriots, Nigeria is at the crossroads, both politically and economically. The coalition insisted that it then calls for “drastic steps and a lot of sacrifices to return the country to the path of prosperity for all as against the current regime where the interests of a few individuals are protected.”

The patriots noted that Naira redesign was long overdue, urging “the CBN to consider inserting expiry date on every batch of the naira notes to ensure that no individual stocks large sums of money in his bedchamber or underground.”

The statement added, “Today, many highly placed individuals, who cannot explain the source of their income, stockpile Naira notes in various denominations in their houses for fear of the anti-graft agencies.

“Some others who are engaged in illicit drug trafficking and kidnapping for ransom have stockpiles of notes in their houses while the economy is starved of urgently needed funds that should be in circulation to help the economy grow.

“For us, any individual or group working to stop the scheduled redesign of banknotes in the country is either ignorant or may be working for corrupt politicians and persons whose sources of income are questionable.

“We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore calls for the sack of the CBN Governor and his management team and treat individuals and groups agitating for the stoppage of Naira redesign as enemies of democracy and the prosperity of the country.

“We call on all security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation persons and groups plotting to truncate the Naira redesign process as the investigation may lead to uncovering criminal syndicate and political thieves behind them.

“We hereby emphasize that northern Nigeria is not any way against the CBN policy to redesign the N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes as already approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Nigeria needs to end vote buying and 2023 is the best time to start the process as tackling vote buying could be one of the many unintended but immeasurable benefits of the Naira redesign beside the long term economic gains across the country”, the patriots concluded.

Ogoni 9: Sobomabo Jackrich Charges Ogonis To Shun Double Standards, Says There Is Hope

The 2023 governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in Rivers State, High Chief Hon. (Amb) Sobomabo Jackrich has charged the people of Ogoni to shun double standards in their struggle against the continuous marginalization, neglect and deprivations meted against Ogoniland.

Jackrich gave the charge on Thursday, 9th November 2022 during a program organized by the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) at the Ken Saro Wiwa Memorial Hall, Bane in remembrance of the 27th year anniversary of the Killing of Ken Saro Wiwa and Ogoni activists by the Abacha Regime.

Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich

He stated that Ogoni leaders should be selfless and sacrificial, and stop the politicization and monetization of the Ogoni struggle for their personal aggrandizement while the land continues to suffer underdevelopment and degradation.

He also noted that despite the riches in Ogoniland, there is nothing tangible to show for it, adding that he has come with the message of hope that Ogoniland will be great again if theyvall work togetjer in one voice and stay resolute and fearless in the struggle.

The program ended with the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of Late Ken Saro-wiwa.

Amb Sobomabo Jackrich also paid a condolence visit to the family of Ken Saro-Wiwa at his Late father’s house in Bane community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

We Remember Ken Saro Wiwa, 27 Years On!

By Sobomabo Jackrich

I am Ambassador Sobomabo Jackrich, Executive Director of the Network For Defence of Democracy and Good Governance.

Today is the 27th memorial anniversary of the brutal execution of Ken Saro Wiwa and 8 others.

I stand with the families of Ogoni 9, and the Ogoni 4, ( AKA Ogoni 13 ) together with thousands of other Ogoni martyrs who paid the Supreme price, in the days of the struggle to restore our hope.

They paid the Supreme price for the Social, Economic, and Environmental Emancipation of Ogoniland, Niger Delta, Nigeria and Africa. May Thier gentle souls, rest in peace.

The year 2022 is historic for many reasons, as the 4th of December shall make it 30 years since the Ogoni people, under the Leadership of Ken Saro Wiwa, took their destinies into their hands and courageously crossed the Rivers of Fear and gave QUIT NOTICE to Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria and Joint Venture Partners.

They were seeking to actualize the hope of the Ogoni people for a better life. As our hero, Ken Saro Wiwa said in one of his last interviews, THE STRUGGLE IS ABOUT HOPE.

I quote:

The Struggle itself is about HOPE. If I didn’t think that there was hope in the future, I will not be fighting.
I will not be encouraging anybody to struggle the way we are doing now!

Yes, there must be HOPE! (Ogoni) is a rich land. It is a well blessed land.
If we can get the oppressors out of the way. If we can get those practicing double standards out of the way. If we can get the pollution to stop. I am sure that Ogoni will be a happy land.

Ken Saro Wiwa’s works, hopes and dreams were for our happiness.

One of our greatest political thinkers and scholar of blessed memory, Prof. Claude Ake, had this to say of the Ogoni struggle.

And I quote, “Ogoni is the Conscience of this country, they have risen above our slave culture of silence. They have found the courage to be free. And they have evolved a political consciousness which denies power to rogues, bullies, fools and hypocrites.

For better or for worse, OGONILAND HOLDS OUR HOPE. Battered and bleeding, they struggle on to realize our HOPES and to restore our dignity. If they falter we die.

And I have come today with the same message of HOPE, building upon the foundation of our fathers and heroes. And Yes, there must be hope.

As we reflect upon the great life and legacy of this GREAT MESSENGER OF HOPE! We must always remember his words, that ” You can Kill the Messenger, but you cannot Kill the message. The Message of HOPE is still alive today.

Let’s keep HOPE alive! For i see RIVERS OF HOPE flowing from Bane in Ogoniland through all parts of Rivers State, Niger Delta, Nigeria and Africa.

Let’s work together to make this HOPE a reality.

Thank you!
