Sunday Dare’s ‘Divisive And Unprofessional Rhetoric’: Bauchi Governor’s Office Urges Presidential Aide to Promote National Unity

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media, Sunday Dare, for what he described as “unprofessional, disrespectful, and divisive rhetoric.”

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado on Sunday, Bala Mohammed’s camp accused Dare of turning his role into a platform for political attacks rather than fostering unity and promoting constructive dialogue.

The statement issued on Sunday, titled “Enough is Enough”, did not hold back in calling out the Presidency for its alleged intolerance to criticism.

Governor Mohammed’s team dragged Dare for releasing his remarks during Juma’at prayers and Armed Forces Remembrance Day, calling it “poor timing” and “a disgrace to the solemnity of the events.”

“Instead of focusing on honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes, Dare chose to prioritise political mudslinging. Is this what the Tinubu administration represents?” the statement questioned.

The Bauchi governor accused the Presidency of fostering a toxic culture that stifles criticism.

THE FULL STATEMENT STATEMENT READS:

Sunday Dare’s Divisive And Unprofessional Rhetoric: Enough Is Enough

The Media Office of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON, has taken note of the ill-timed, unprofessional, and divisive comments made by Mr. Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication. His recent tirade is not only beneath the dignity of someone speaking on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but it also undermines the very principles of democracy and constructive governance.

  1. Ill-Timing And Lack Of Professionalism

Mr. Dare’s remarks, strategically released during a sacred time of reflection during Jumat prayers and the commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, demonstrate a lack of respect for the gravity of national events. By prioritizing political attacks over honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes, Mr. Dare displayed poor judgment unbecoming of his office. This calculated move is a disservice to the President, who deserves better representation.

Furthermore, the tone and substance of Mr. Dare’s comments are unprofessional and fail to reflect the high standards expected of a presidential spokesperson. Instead of fostering constructive dialogue, his statement pits the President against key stakeholders and democratic voices offering feedback and critique—essential components of participatory governance.

  1. Increasing Intolerance to Feedback

The Presidency, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has regrettably demonstrated increasing intolerance toward feedback and criticism. Rather than welcoming constructive suggestions from patriotic Nigerians, including Governor Bala Mohammed, the President’s media team has chosen to antagonize and vilify dissenting voices. This combative approach is not only undemocratic but also counterproductive in a nation as diverse and pluralistic as Nigeria.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s remarks were neither irresponsible nor political. They were grounded in patriotism and an earnest desire to ensure that national policies, such as the proposed Tax Reform Bills, are inclusive and reflect the voices of all Nigerians. It is unfortunate that instead of addressing these valid concerns, Mr. Dare resorted to personal attacks and diversionary tactics.

  1. Lack of Genuine Consultation on Tax Reform Bills

The crux of Mr. Dare’s tirade centres on Governor Bala Mohammed’s critique of the Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly. We wish to reiterate that Governor Mohammed’s remarks are not an attack on the President but a legitimate call for greater consultation and inclusivity.

The claims by the Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, chaired by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, that consultations were conducted are, at best, misleading. A thorough review of their engagements reveals that these were mere briefings rather than genuine consultations.

The two terms are fundamentally different: while briefings are top-down, unilateral information-sharing sessions, consultations require multidirectional, inclusive dialogue with stakeholders.

We formally demand that the Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee publicly release detailed consultation reports with stakeholder inputs, in line with the Freedom of Information Act. This transparency will allow Nigerians to verify whether the committee genuinely engaged stakeholders or merely used token gatherings to rubber-stamp its proposals.

  1. Constructive Criticism Is Not Political

Governor Bala Mohammed has consistently supported policies that align with the nation’s best interests and has provided constructive feedback on those that require improvement.

His critique of the Tax Reform Bills stems from his experience as a former Federal Capital Territory Minister, a current second-term Governor and Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, who, besides understanding the importance of inclusive governance has first hand experience of the dangers posed by unwholesome or ill-digested macro-economic policies.

Policies that affect the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians cannot be imposed without broad-based consultation. In a constitutional democracy, the President is obligated to engage stakeholders, build consensus, and consider alternative views. Governor Mohammed’s comments are a reminder of this responsibility, not an attack on the President’s authority.

In fact, it is correct to say that Governor Bala Mohammed is only a good student of President Tinubu whose pedigree as a pro-democracy activist and critic launched his political career, catapulting him to the exalted position that he occupies today. Not only did President Tinubu stand boldly against anti-democratic military dictatorship, even as Governor of Lagos State, he fought President Olusegun Obasanjo to a standstill in pursuit of his vision of further democratising the local government system in the state. We do not recall that the President’s media team ever descended on him with expletives or unbridled disrespect.

  1. Governor Bala Mohammed’s Proven Leadership

While Mr. Dare questions Governor Mohammed’s leadership, Bauchi State’s track record under his administration speaks for itself. From transformative infrastructure projects to human capital development, Governor Mohammed has delivered measurable progress that has earned national and international recognition. These achievements contrast sharply with Mr. Dare’s baseless accusations of “irresponsible politics.”

If it pleases him, Sunday Dare and his fellow jobbers can continue to wallow in the delusory bliss that their distasteful campaign of disinformation is capable of hoodwinking the good people of Bauchi State, or other sub-nationals, into an unquestioning acceptance of a fiscal policy that, despite all the stated good intentions, could place them on the path of irredeemable economic ruin.

When the electorate of Bauchi State voted resoundingly to return Bala Mohammed to power in 2023, they did so in recognition of his faithful implementation of his ‘My Bauchi Project’ policy document and confident that the next four years would be more fruitful.

Sunday Dare is welcome to Bauchi State for an on-the-spot assessment of the transformation that has taken place under the dynamic leadership of Bala Mohammed, achievements that have been acknowledged by top Federal Government functionaries such as former President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Shettima and others.

These achievements include sustained economic transformation through massive investment in critical infrastructure such as roads, markets, and housing projects, which have significantly boosted commerce and created jobs thereby reducing youth restiveness and insecurity. The governor’s agricultural initiatives, anchored on the provision of subsidized inputs and promotion of modern farming techniques have empowered farmers and increased food production.

In healthcare, the state has prioritized the rehabilitation of hospitals, construction of primary healthcare centres, and provision of free maternal and child healthcare services. Similarly, significant investments in education infrastructure, teacher training, targeted stakeholder engagement and general recalibration of the education environment are addressing the age-long out-of-school problem while creating the impetus for sustained improvement in performance.

On Youth and Women Empowerment , through various skills acquisition programs and grants, thousands of youths and women have been empowered to become self-reliant, contributing to the state’s socio-economic growth.

These achievements are not only a testament to Governor Mohammed’s visionary leadership but also a reminder of what can be achieved when governance is people focused.

Similarly, the Presidency’s media team should focus on highlighting the President’s accomplishments in critical areas such as security, the economy, infrastructure, and education, rather than engaging in needless squabbles.

  1. Enough Is Enough

This is not the first time Mr. Dare has launched an unprovoked attack on Governor Bala Mohammed. His role as a media adviser demands professionalism, diplomacy, and an unwavering commitment to uniting Nigerians behind the President’s vision. Instead, Mr. Dare has chosen to sow division and distract from critical national issues.

We reiterate that Governor Bala Mohammed respects the Office of the President and the responsibilities it entails. However, respect does not preclude critique in a democracy. Moving forward, we urge Mr. Dare to channel his efforts toward promoting the President’s policies and achievements, if any, rather than disparaging those offering constructive feedback.

A democracy thrives on dialogue, not intimidation. It is time for the President’s media team to embrace this principle and recognize that dissent is not a threat—it is an opportunity to build a better, stronger Nigeria.

Abia Labour Party Crises – Is Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu Among The Prophets?

By Sunday Chigozie
Eziama Afara

… three weeks after his statement in a viral video, there is fire on the mountain.

There was a video interview wherein the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu made some political predictions and urged the Governor of Abia State Dr Alex Otti to cross over to APC for his reelection, considering the realities ahead in 2027. It was a friendly and harmless advice, which didn’t in anyway suggested directly or indirectly that the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu is harbouring any intension of contesting Abia Governorship against Governor Alex Otti.

Therefore, one wonders why Governor Alex Otti would take such a simple political invitation from a supposedly close friend to another level of animosity. Otti threw caution to the winds by spending Abia resources on social media e-rats to continuously attack the image of the Deputy Speaker; if he wasn’t behind it why hasn’t he made a public statement asking his brothers/friends/supporters, particularly Professor Chidi Odinkalu to desist from his unwarranted attacks on the person of distinguished Deputy Speaker?

. Is Gov Alex Otti really this callous as has been severally accused by his close allies and associates?

It is therefore unfathomable the extent Governor Alex Otti took the mere political advise from Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu when similar invitation was made to the immediate past Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu during his own time in office. Like the perfect and peaceful gentleman that he is; Dr. Ikpeazu laughed over the invite and simply and jokingly asked Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu to come over to his own party, the PDP. There was no drama, no bad-blood, rather they both laughed over it and still enjoyed robust relationship till date.

Again, same invitation was extended to former Governor T.A Orji, by the Deputy Speaker, Ochendo as he is fondly called simply replied by saying “…my family has joined APC, I have retired from active politics“; and the rest was history as both leaders laughed over it. Why has Governor Otti decided to make a mountain out of a harmless political invite, which other Governors before him didn’t consider as anything serious but has surprisingly triggered a very high level of bitterness in a Governor who pretends to be more Christian than others and follows renowned Pastors around to create a false impression on people.

However, it is pertinent to point out again and clearly too that in the said viral video, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu never said he was running for the office of governor against Governor Otti, but only merely invited him to crossover to APC to run for his reelection because, Rt. Hon Ben Kalu foresaw that the structure Governor Otti was standing on was not sustainable.

Surreptitiously, Governor Alex Otti hired tik-tokers all over the world and a certain pay-to-twit minion of a Law Professor to malign and make mockery of a simple invitation, instead of brush it aside jokingly like other Governors. Thousands and millions of Abia taxpayers money was spent on Lagos state and Abuja based journalists, skit makers, social media influencers to launch series of attacks on his supposed friend and brother, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu. Who does that to another, he calls friend for no just reason.?

The question begging for answer is why a Governor who is struggling to pay Seventy thousand minimum wage and didn’t pay wage award as at when other Governors were paying; could afford to be wasting billions of Naira on National Newspapers, TV stations, bloggers in Lagos and Abuja just to destroy someone he once called a friend?

Expectedly, the Deputy Speaker has remained calm without going to war on the media with a man he called friend, notwithstanding the provocative attacks on his integrity, howbeit his statement in the said viral video seems like a prophecy which is unfolding daily in Abia Labour Party. The structure Governor Otti is standing on now is shaking in line with Ben Kalu’s prediction, only the wise can read the handwriting on the wall. Governor Otti’s woes are compounded by the sack of many Abia workers, inability to show Abians where he built the N6.5billion recreational facilities, lack of transparency and accountability, the government’s penchant for propanganda, deception and lies.

Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu’s prophecy has come true in the sense that, If Abia Labour Party cannot deliver a simple Local Government elections peacefully without Governor Otti running around to secure platforms from Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) to Young People’s Party (YPP) for his nominated candidates to contest under, is it the INEC controlled Gubernatorial election that won’t give Otti even bigger stress?. Recall that the authentic Labour Party leadership just recently concluded to withdraw the automatic reelection ticket hitherto reserved for Otti.
Prophecies of those close to God usually come to pass, is Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu also among the prophets? It is even appearing to be so.

Consequently, these purveyors of political attacks on Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu took their media warfare against an important bill sponsored by the Deputy Speaker seeking to establish a UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIAN LANGUAGES at ABA, as can be seen in the National Assembly journal of 2nd October, 2024 and published by the clerk of National Assembly. There was nowhere in the said journal that “TINUBU UNIVERSITY” was ever mentioned. If not for mischief and wickedness why would these people fighting the Deputy Speaker mock a bill that will eventually upgrade the existing but moribund Nigerian Institute Of Nigerian Languages in Aba to a full university, and ultimately expose the decaying institution to better funding through accessing Tetfund and other federal government policies. Moreover, it will be at no cost on Federal government.

Apart from the many direct benefits to the host community like employment, infrastructural development etc that upgrading the institution to a full university will attract; Nigerian languages are daily eroded by lack of interest of the younger generation, teachers of these languages are diminishing by the day, parents are forgetting to speak it at home and in the process one of the core element of our identity ( language) fades away before our eyes in preference to the language of our colonial masters. We all should be worried as the representatives are worried.

Finally, it is high time, we all supported the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu to continue putting Igboland on the map.

Do Not Destroy Democracy In Nigeria: CNPP Charges INEC to Stay Impartial in Edo Election

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality and ensure the sanctity of the electoral process in the Edo State Governorship Election.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP emphasized that “As Edo State citizens have exercised their right to vote, it is crucial that INEC remains impartial and transparent during the collation of results.” It is worrisome and troubling that the feelers we are getting from Edo State confirm a deliberate ploy by one of the big parties who are mouthing the support of Mr President, and insisting on changing the results and the figures already on the INEC Portal. Mr President MUST call them to order.

The CNPP insists that INEC must safeguard the trust of Nigerians by prioritizing the integrity of the process, warning against manipulation or undermining democracy in the State.

“INEC must not allow itself to be used to scuttle democracy in Edo State under any circumstances” the CNPP cautioned.

With the Ondo State governorship election on the way, the CNPP stresses the importance of INEC demonstrating its commitment to conducting credible elections to restore confidence in the electoral process after the questionable 2023 general elections.

“We call on all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and security agencies, to prioritize peace and decorum during the collation process,” the CNPP said. “Let us work together to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders.”

The CNPP’s call to action comes as Nigerians watch closely to see if INEC will deliver on its promise of free, fair, and credible elections.

Falana Chambers Warns INEC Against Recognizing Expired Leadership of Labour Party

A legal firm, Falana Chambers, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warning the commission against recognizing Julius Abure as the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party.

The firm, which represents the National Transition Committee of the Labour Party, stated that Abure’s tenure has expired and any further recognition would be in violation of a Federal High Court judgment in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/IC/866/2014 between Labour Party & 3 Ors Vs Com. Salisu Muhammed, and an INEC-brokered agreement of June 27, 2022.

The letter, dated July 4, 2024, and signed by Marahal Abubakar, LP, requested that INEC desist from fraternizing with Abure and his cohorts, and restrain officials from undermining the administration of justice and respect for the rule of law. The firm attached a report of the mediated settlement and a certified true copy of the Federal High Court judgment to the letter.

The letter noted that the Labour Party has not conducted any election for over four years, contravening Section 233(1)(a) and (2)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, read alongside Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022. It also emphasized that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is the platform of the Labour Party, and that the party has been unable to conduct elections due to the expired tenure of Abure and his National Working Committee.

The legal firm warned that failure to comply with the request will lead to contempt proceedings against the INEC Chairman at the Federal High Court. The letter stated, “TAKE NOTICE that unless you comply with the foregoing request forthwith, we shall approach the Federal High Court and institute contempt proceedings against you.”
